Constant Antivirus popups/browser hijack: worm.win32.netsky

Out of the blue today, I started getting these popups, and am unsure even how. They tried to tell me that I had the netsky worm, and to download their AV software to correct things.

It has also hijacked my IE browser, pointing me to some software site that does the same thing. Have pasted my DSS log, and attached the DSS extra file, and my Panda ActiveScan output.

Any help to exsponge my system of this garbage is much appreciated.

Hello Mark and welcome to TSF,

This will require more than one round to properly clean. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

1. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.

2. Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Disable Windows Defender as it may interfere with the fixes below:

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, Options.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. (into Normal Mode.)

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:\rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Notes

1. If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Other than undesirable cookies being reported by Panda, your logs are clean. You can either use Ccleaner which you already have onboard, to clear those out, or clear all cookies in Firefox browser.

Clear Mozilla Firefox cookies:

Open the Mozilla Browser>Tools>Options>Privacy>Cookies>Clear

If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions and helpful links:

The following procedure will clear out ComboFix.exe, as well as the backups and quarantines created by the fix. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.

It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

IESpyAD Zoned Out to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system as it basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. Link 1 Link 2 Link 3 Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop -------------------------------------------------------------------- Close any open browsers. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Disable Windows Defender as it may interfere with the fixes below: Open Windows Defender. Click on Tools, Options. Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended). After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following: 1) Restart your computer 2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8. 3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear 4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter. 5) Login with your usual account. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it * Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place Begin the scan by selecting If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
