Re: Audio Hijacker
Hello datacycle and welcome to TSF,
We prefer a more comprehensive set of logs to assist in detecting any malware that may be present. As noted in our sticky topic (Updated!) IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting A Log, download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. What DSS will do:
Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
Please include the following in your next reply: main.txt an attached extra.txt |

Thanks, Adam.

I do see HLVista in your extra.txt, and this may be connected with that, but I'd like to verify it is a legit file. Please run a search for hl_simple.dll (it's likely in C:\Windows\system32 ) When you find that file, right click it and select 'Properties'. Then go to the Version tab and see what information you can get from there (Company, Description, etc.) and post it here. -------------------------------------------------------- Let's see if an online scan reveals anything lurking about. Re: Audio Hijacker
Hi Ried,
I removed the xufo.com in the Hosts file. hl_simple.dll is part of a Vista compatibility patch that is needed for a program I use for school. I tried to run Kaspersky several times, and each time it says "Update Failed" and will not let me continue (even after restarting and whatnot). So I ran an AVG Virus scan and Adaware and it didn't find anything. |

Re: Audio Hijacker
Thank you for the info regarding hl_simple.dll
![]() Press the Windows Logo key and the 'R' on your keyboard to open the Run command. Copy/paste the following text into the Run box and click OK: sc stop perfmons Repeat the above procedure, and copy/paste this text into the Run box and click OK: sc delete perfmons ----------------------------------------------------- Reboot your system. ------------------------------------------------------ Regarding Kaspersky, uninstall Kaspersky Online scanner via the Add or Remove programs and try again. If you still have difficulty with Kaspersky, try TrendMicro and post the results here along with a new HijackThis log. Do your issues persist? |

Re: Audio Hijacker
Hi, and thanks for your help.
![]() I did the sc delete perfmons, and I'll post here if it happens again. May I ask if you know what "perfmons" is? Neither Trendmicro or Kaspersky will let me download their files from the Internet. I assume this is a Vista issue (with ActiveX or something), do you know how to resolve it? Trendmicro says "unable to get files from the Internet!" and Kaspersky says "Update failed." Also, do you know of a good registry cleaner/scanner I could use to look for anything supicious there? |

2. Vista will prompt you a few times when downloading ActiveX as IE runs in protected mode. Are you allowing all of the Security prompts? 3. You do best discussing registry cleaners and optimization with the folks in the Vista Support section of this forum.

Hello Adam,
![]() Do you still have dss.exe on your system? That tool provides me with a lot more info than just a HijackThis log. Run a scan with dss.exe and post that log here. Scroll up to my first reply to you, if you need the download link again. |

Re: Audio Hijacker
Hi Ried,
Thanks for helping me! I still have DSS but it only creates main.txt, and not extra.txt for some reason. I uninstalled it and re-downloaded DSS and it is behaving the same way. By the way, I am running Windows Vista, and I did Right-click / Run as Administrator to run DSS. Here are the contents of main.txt: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68 Run by Adam on 2008-01-13 13:04:33 Computer is in Normal Mode. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- HijackThis (run as Adam.exe) ------------------------------------------------ Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 1:04:36 PM, on 1/13/2008 Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16575) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exe C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exe C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe C:\Windows\sttray.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnscfg.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\MOM.EXE C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CCC.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ieuser.exe C:\Users\Adam\Desktop\dss.exe C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\HIJACK~1\Adam.exe R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Internet Explorer R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: Spybot-S&D IE Protection - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - c:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] sttray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVP] "C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0\avp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [StartCCC] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CLIStart.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WMPNSCFG] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [Sidebar] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\Sidebar.exe /detectMem (User 'LOCAL SERVICE') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [WindowsWelcomeCenter] rundll32.exe oobefldr.dll,ShowWelcomeCenter (User 'LOCAL SERVICE') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [Sidebar] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\Sidebar.exe /detectMem (User 'NETWORK SERVICE') O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O4 - Startup: CCC.lnk = ? Hi Adam,

No worries about the extra.txt. Since the C:\Deckard folder is still on your system, we'd have to run dss.exe in a different fashion to have it produce that report again. Thus far, I see no need for it. Last edited by Ried; 01-13-2008 at 09:16 PM. |

Re: Audio Hijacker
Hi,
Here is the Kaspersky log, which shows up every time I reboot (Kaspersky runs on startup). From what I understand, Perfs.exe is actually the Vista system performance monitor. Is this true? Re: Audio Hijacker
Hi,
No, it is not related to the Performance Monitor. I have Vista, and that file is not present on my system. See this link --> http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-3545.html We already removed the service, and the file earlier and I do not see the service returning in this last set of logs. Let's see if this next tool will shed some light: Please download SREng. 1. Extract it to Desktop & double click SREng.exe to run it 2. Select 'Smart Scan' & tick "Verify Digital Signatures" 3. Click on the [Scan] button 4. When finished, click on the [Save Reports] button & save the log to Desktop 5. Attach the log in your next reply. Dont post it. You may have to rename SREngLOG.log to SREngLOG.txt to upload it. |

Re: Audio Hijacker
Hi Ried,
I apologize for not noticing this sooner, but it appears that Kaspersky was keeping that malware log for information purposes. Once I deleted the log, the perfs.exe didn't show up again. Thank you for all your help! |
