World of Warcraft Keylogger

Dumbly, I clicked a link that later revealed itself to be a keylogger.

I've run NOD32 which removed one file (which it reported it could not identify), AVG Anti-Spyware (which removed a slew of various cookies), Windows Defender (which removed nothing), and Panda Online scan (currently in progress).

The link to the site where I believe I may have gotten a keylogger is here:
http://www.ug zgg.cn/albums/x1/seymourseesmore/currentbearformsize.jpg (WARNING -- LINK LEADS TO A POTENTIAL KEYLOGGER, REMOVE THE SPACE BETWEEN THE "G" and "Z" TO CONTINUE)

In the Meantime:

Can I do anything to sort of circumvent the way a keylogger works (ie, copy/pasting my password from a text file) or are they more sophisticated than this?

To be absolutely safe:

What do you recommend? Is a reformat/reinstall the only way to be completely sure?

The account that could potentially be keylogged is probably worth upwards of $2,000, so I'd rather not lose it to me being dumb and clicking in places that I shouldn't (especially when I don't have a virus scanner).

Re: World of Warcraft Keylogger

Very quickly, the "i-hate-keyloggers" program is something I downloaded after I became worried that I had a keylogger on my system. It reports to disable to hooks used by keyloggers.

No idea if it actually works, but it seems to be a safe file insofar as the google reviews of it go.

Re: World of Warcraft Keylogger

Bump, sort of given up and under the impression that I am clean...

But it would be nice not to have to change my password every night.

Re: World of Warcraft Keylogger

Hello msidebottom,

I'm not seeing anything of note in these logs other than undesirable cookies.

Let's see if Kaspersky sees anything different. Using Internet Explorer, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Re: World of Warcraft Keylogger

Hi,

Kaspersky is only reporting mIrc which is fine if you installed that yourself.

But it would be nice not to have to change my password every night.
Are you only doing this as a precaution? Or do you have reason to suspect someone still has access?

Purely precautionary.

I installed mIRC myself.

Guess I'm calling this resolved.

Thanks for the help :).

Re: World of Warcraft Keylogger

Ok.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
  • It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

IESpyAD Zoned Out to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system as it basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER
Understanding and Using Firewalls

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

-----------------------------------------------------

Follow the list above and the potential for infection will reduce dramatically.
