IE inoperable

Thanks in advance of anyone who is willing to help.
Two days ago, I went to a online space invaders game and may have changed some setting for the keyboard. The same day, I opened an email that may have been questionable. Later, my IE just quit working. I have to use task manager to quit everything. I am using Mozilla. I got rid of Norton and Winpatrol and downloaded NOD32 and AVAST. NOD found java bytverify and I got rid of it thinking it was my problem. Still dead. I downloaded AVG and Spybot S/D and ran. Downloaded Trendmicro which uninstalled AVG. Ran and still unresponsive(1 green bar in the progress window).
I am running IE 6 for preference. I did everything except Panda scan and microsoft update(won't let me). Thanks for your help.

Re: IE inoperable

Hello chemist,

Not surprisingly, the malware that has gotten onto your system is not evident in this log which is why we prefer a more comprehensive set of logs to assist in detecting any malware that may be present.

As noted in our sticky topic (Updated!) IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting A Log, download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
  • DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

Please include the following in your next reply:

main.txt
an attached extra.txt

Re: IE inoperable

I really appreciate your help. I am having a problem. Uploading the extra.txt is not working. When I do the scan, I don't see the extra.txt anywhere.

Re: IE inoperable

Ugh..I hate this one. We'll have a bit of work to do and this will require several rounds, so please stay with me until given the 'all clear'.

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Download: ResetProtocolDefaults.reg and save it to your desktop. We'll need this later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download FindAWF to your Desktop.
  • Double-click FindAWF.exe to start the tool.
  • Select option #1 - Scan for bak folders by typing 1 and press 'Enter'
  • When the tool has completed, a report will open up in notepad. Please post the results of the awf.txt here.
**Do not run any other option unless directed to do so.**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with HijackThis and save the log.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

C:\ComboFix.txt
awf.txt
New HijackThis log

Re: IE inoperable

Here you go...

Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Re: IE inoperable

A couple of errors. I got an ExceptionProccessingMessage box at the end of combofix. Also got an error box during awf, something about a dll file wasn't found or couldn't load. I hit ignore.

Re: IE inoperable

I am having problems with safe mode. After I hit Enter, a bunch of files start scrolling but then stop. They are system32/drivers and it won't go past mup.sys. The screen just freezes. Could it be Trendmicro loading? I have it turned off but it still loads.

Re: IE inoperable

No, Trend Micro won't be loading in Safe Mode.

Perform the fix from Normal Mode.

I finally got it to work in safe mode using msconfig while trying to figure out how to stop Trendmicro from loading on startup. I guess I wasn't waiting long enough. I did everything I could. IE is still dead. Hour glass flickers for about 3 secs and then nothing happens. I remember seeing something about a 3 sec timeout in startup? realsched.exe keeps trying to load and I get failure to initialize boxes.

Re: IE inoperable

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click smitfraudfix.exe to start the tool.
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
  • A text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
  • Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so

Re: IE inoperable

If anything, disable your Anti Virus program as it may detect portions of the tool as 'potentially unwanted'. It's nothing to be concerned about as this tool and it's processes are used for legit purposes. We just don't want the onboard AV to 'disinfect' the tool.

Re: IE inoperable

There it is. Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

***************************************************

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. (into Normal Mode.)

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:\rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:
· "Security Info"
· "Warning Message"
· "Security Desktop"
· "Warning Homepage"
· "Desktop Uninstall"

Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Notes

1. If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

2. As many of the variants of Smitfraud have begun invading the Hosts file, this tool will reset your Hosts file as a necessary precaution. You will also have to reset any specific modifications you may require such as Hosts MVPS.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with dss.exe

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then post the following logs in your next reply...

c:\rapport.txt
Panda results
main.txt

Rapport is over 200000 characters. Extremely slow. IE opened for a moment but still won't work. Tell me how to report Rapport.

Re: IE inoperable

Click your green Start button in the bottom left of your taskbar.
In the menu that appears, click on My Computer (It should be on the right hand side toward to top)
Under Hard Disk Drives, double click the C:\ drive.

You'll now see many folders and files--they are listed alphabetically--folders first.

Look for the rapport.txt. When you find it, double click it to open it.
