Please Help Updating Problems

Dear Sirs.

I have for some time now been having problems, when trying to update various programmes on my computer, the programmes that will not update are listed below.

McAfee Security my main protection

SpyBot Search & Destroy

Ad-Aware 2007

Clean Space Ultmate

Investor 3 my stock market program.

With the only program that appears to be working and I can run updates.

SUPER Antispy ware Free Edition.

I have tried to follow your 5 steps, but the virus scan would not run, and Spyware Blaster, would not update. I have run Deckard's System Scanner, and copy and paste them below.

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Your help would be appreciated.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Not sure if this will address all your updating issues, but I do see something which needs to be fixed.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from on of these sites:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...Fixwareout.exe

http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

**If you receive an error message while trying to run FixWareout, copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, and run FixWareout again.

Tenobob.

Sorry I posted reply first time as a reply to your email.

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How is your system behaving now, please?

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Tenobob

Sorry but problem, I have installed Kaspersky Online Scanner, but it requires that I disable my current virse protection.

Sorry but I do not know how to do that.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

It's not a requirement, but it is recommended.

In your system tray (lower right of the desktop screen), there should be an icon for McAfee which you can right-click on and Select Exit.

If you cannot, try the online scan anyway.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Tenonbob.
Thanks once again for your help, I am still unable to switch off McAfee, and have not been able to run a Kaspersky Scan.

Computer Status Report.
I have been able to update all my programs, and install as recommended SpywareBlaster.
After running all my Anti Virus programs, Twice, they are now saying that I am clean.
First running of SpyBot Search & Destroy, it found 11 items, my other programs only removed coockies.
All my programs appear to be runing OK, my Google Email, which was running exceedingly slow, and coming up with a message Not Responding, now seems to be OK, if still a little slow.
Computer speed, maybe a little slow.

Jack.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Jack -

Have you tried running the online scan at all? Ignore McAfee.

If the online scan fails to run, what exactly happens?

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Hello, Jack -

It's tetonbob, thanks.

See if this illustrated guide helps:

Online Scanner

Failing that....

Try this scanner instead:

Go here and do the BitDefender online virus scan.
  • Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Leave the scanning options at default and press "Click here to scan" to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished.
  • When the scan is finished, click on "Click here to export the scan results"
  • Save the report to your desktop then come back here and post it in your next reply.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications". (4th one down)
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Good work, Jack.

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Be sure to run full system scans with your anti-virus and anti-spyware applications once a week or so, after updating their definitions.

C:\QooBox\ is ComboFix's quarantine folder. You can safely delete it

Please also delete ComboFix.exe

C:\Deckard is DSS working folder. It can be safely deleted. Also delete dss.exe

C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be reseting/clearing the cache in a little while.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

IE-SpyAd - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. An installation tutorial is available here.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Tenonbob.

I have been following your latest instructions, and I am struggling with three items.

1. I looked for C:\QooBox\, and ComboFix.exe and I could not find it, I believe that you used, Fixwareout, and not ComboFix.
2. I downloaded IE-SPYAD_ZO.EXE, saved ie-spyad_zo to Desktop, then clicked Run this brings on the screen a WinZip Self-Extractor box, asking me to click the Unzip button, when clicked, it says 8 files unzipped, click OK, but then I am stuck, I do not know what to do next.
3. MPVS Host File, after downloading, because I have WinRAR, it go痴 into a WinRAR file called 塗osts, but the extraction instructions, are not the same as your instructions.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Sorry, I use ComboFix so frequently, that's part of my standard closing speech, and I didn't edit it out. You can stop looking for it

Use this guide to help you install IE-Spyad:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/arti...ml#post1068846

I use WinRAR also, though I don't have it set to open zip files by default. The principle is the same. Extract the contents of the zipped file to a folder of their own. Open that folder. Double click on MVPS.bat That's it.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Tenonbob

Sorry but problems, I think I must have done somethink wrong, but I do not know what.
I had Installed SpyBot, but it would not update, when I tried to install IE-Spyad it seemed to be fighting SpyBot, which lead to I removing bits of SpyBot, untill the computer crashed.
I could not get onto the Net, I in the end deleated Temporary net files, and History, which has aloud me to now be able to contact you.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Well, I have heard that Spybot's immunization and IE-Spyad are not compatible on all machines, but I've never experienced it. I suggest you use one or the other, but not both.

And, Jack....it's tetonbob, please.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Tetonbob "copied & pasted"

My most sincere apologies, in no way was I trying to insult you.

Totally the opposite is the case, I wish to thank you very much, for your paceance and understand in helping me with my problems, but I am afraid that you fell foul of, my biggest life long problem, my dyslexia, it is also the reason that fail to properly read, understand, and follow your instructions.

I am sorry to say that, I can not read and make any sense of your name.

I have reinstalled SpyBot - Search & Destroy, and it is now working.

My computer is again running slow, it took Kaspersky, four and a half hours to run last night, it use to take approx one hour to run.

When I write this in 展ord, to help with my problem and I keep getting 撤rogramme Not Responding, I have just also had the same response when Logging on to your site.

SptBot use to survey approx 68000 but know it looks at 84000.

Sorry again but please 滴elp.

Jack.

Re: Please Help Updating Problems

Jack, I really don't know what could be the problem. We removed the malware that I could see.

If there are any programs you just added, uninstall them, and see if that helps.

Post a new HijackThis log so I can see if all is in order.
