Hi melissalee and welcome to the TechSupportForums

In order for us to be able to properly asses your situation and provide the necessary corrective measures, we need you to first follow Microbell's 5-Step Procedure as requested in the above "sticky".

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

I am having continuous pop ups that are saying my system is infected with a trojan and everything is at risk. There is a red stop sign with an x in the middle in the lower right hand corner over next to the clock. It says that there's a trojan and when I click to close it, it pops up this ultimate defender site that says to download their product. I haven't done that. Also I get the pop up that is right in the middle of the screen and no matter what you do it wont go to the background of anything so you have to click close or the x which then brings you back to the ultimate defender virus site. I cannot remember the trojan name, but I can get it from a friend of mine if you need it. I told it to him and he wrote it down. Please let me know if you need anything else, and I really appreciate your help! Thank you so much.

Melissa

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

I see by your DSS report that both your Kaspersky Antivirus and Firewall have both been de-activated and are outdated. Please confirm that you are aware of this.

If your subscription has run out, please renew it immediately or if you don't intend to renew it, please uninstall the suite and tell me so I can suggest some free alternatives to cover you while you decide what to do.

It is not worthwhile cleaning up this mess if you have no protection in place as you will be totally reinfected the first time you browse the net again.

Awaiting your reply,

Trevuren

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

Yes I was aware that they were deactivated, I did so because something in the 5 steps said to turn it off. I don't normally use Kaspersky, I usually use Zonealarm, but I installed Kaspersky from a friend to see if it would fix the program.

As far as I know, Zone Alarm is not outdated, and I planned on reactivating it before I get back on the net. Does my log show this? Or do I need to do something else. Another friend was telling me to get the free McAfee off the net, should I do that as well?

Also I think the name of the trojan was trogan.skylook.worm or something similar to that.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Thank you

Melissa

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

Kaspersky Internet Security is a suite of products that contains an AntiVirus, antiSpyware and a firewall all in one. I believe that the Zone Alarm product that you are using may only be the firewall which is good stand alone firewall.

If you are looking for a reasonably good antivirus, one of these will do the trick:

Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:
Regardless of what you choose to do, do not surf without an Active Antivirus and a software firewall that are both working. Until you decide, please reactivate the Kaspersky products.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Regards,

Trevuren

Here is my report.txt log. I also updated my Kaspersky and ran it and deleted everything it found. Let me know what I need to do now. Thank you.

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

A. Please RUN HijackThis
  1. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  2. Place a check mark beside the following item:

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

  3. Now with the item selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete it by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  4. Reboot Your System

  5. Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

Regards,

Trevuren

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

Sorry that it has taken so long to get back to you. I spent some time in hospital and am just getting back to work.

Your log looks clean. We should still have an in-depth look at your entire system to make sure that no "baddies" are still lurking:

Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

Your logs looks clean. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Re: Ultimate Cleaner pop ups

Congratulations, your logs look CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you system is completely clean:

Time for some housekeeping
  • First, using the Add/Remove module in your Control Panel, please UNINSTALL SdFix.
  • Next, please Delete your current copy of ComboFix.
  • Now, download this file - (A newer version of CombvoFix) combofix.exe by sUBs
    • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make sure you keep your Windows OS currentby visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

2. I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren
