Virtuemonde

Hi,

Me and my sister recently got virtuemonde on our laptops. We share the same wireless connection, and I think that the problem started on her computer and spread to mine very fast, right after a friend tried downloading some movie on her laptop. Now our computers are popping up unwanted ads and it really slow. We have used spyware doctor, symantec antivirus and Spybot S&D to scan and tried to remove the malwares. Most of them have been removed, but we have had no success with virtuemonde. I don't know much about computers, so help with removing this thing would be really appreciated.

Re: Virtuemonde

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Re: Virtuemonde

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Download this file - http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...a/ComboFix.exe

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

  2. Disconnect from the internet....pull the plug!
  3. Go to -> Run -> paste in the following single line command & click OK

    "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

  4. Follow the prompts. Type "1" and press Enter to begin the scan.
  5. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  7. Re-establish an internet connection.
  8. Please download HijackThis to your desktop

    Alternate link

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

    1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
    2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
    3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Virtuemonde

Ok, I did all that was instructed. I just want to mention, after I ran the combo.exe and hijackthis etc, my computer ran a scheduled run of Symantec antivirus, and still found trojan.vundo. And also, I am having a lot of problem in connecting to the internet. Before it would show an exclaimation mark against my network connection and tell limited or no connectivity. Now, my wireless connection is almost never connecting at all. And after running combo.exe etc, even the icon for the network connection is not showing up :o(. So now I am not even getting to know if I am connected or not. Please fix this as well :o( because if I don't have internet, I can't communicate with you guys!

Thanks,

Eeshita

Re: Virtuemonde

I need to you post the logs I've requested before we can continue.

The log from ComboFix, and a new HijackThis log. Do not attach them, just add them to your reply.

The issues of connectivity and malware may be unrelated.

Re: Virtuemonde

You'll be better served trying to get the connectivity issue solved through our Hardware or Windows XP forums. The staff and members there will be better able to assist you with that.

Can you take a peek inside these folders, and tell me what's there, if anything?

Re: Virtuemonde

Ok, good.

From what I can see, the malware issue should be taken care of. At this point, I'd generally have you perform an online scan to look for remnants, but with your connectivity issues, that might be difficult right now.

First, restart your system, and see if the wireless connection returns to the system tray.

Look in your Device Manager, and see if there are any yellow exclamation points or red Xs.

Look in Control Panel > Network Connections >Wireless, right click and see if it's enabled. If a Repair option is available, use it.

Re: Virtuemonde

Hi,

I checked my device manager. there are no folders with exclamation marks or x s.

I also did the repair wireless connection. the msg given is:
windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action can not be completed: renewing your IP address. for assistance contact the person who manages your network.

I also performed antivirus scans with adaware, spysweeper and symantec. nothing has been found. if you give me clean signal then only the xp ppl will help me with my internet connection.

thank you

Re: Virtuemonde

Ok, since all scans are coming up clean, I'd suggest you post in either Networking or XP forum for the connectivity issue.

You can first try this:

Go to Start > Run > then paste in this single line command & click OK:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Restart your system, and see if that has helped.

Re: Virtuemonde

Hi,

scans are coming up clean, but my computer is still acting weird and very slow. I did a scan again in the mean time, sometimes one of the programs is detecting some random cookies that have medium to high risk level. Does that mean that I still have the malware somewhere in my computer?

Re: Virtuemonde

Not really. You'll always get cookies. Every site you visit place them on your machine, unless you use some sort of controlling software.

Re: Virtuemonde

One of the other things you need to do once you get your connection issue solved is update your version of Java.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications". (4th one down)
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may want to perform one or both of these online scans also:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Delete these:

Other than that, your logs appear clean.

We still have a few items to address.

Clear your Firefox Cookies
  • Click Tools -> Options
  • Click Privacy Tab
  • Click the "Show Cookies" button
  • Click the "Remove All Cookies" button, which is at the bottom of the window.
  • Click Close

Clear your Internet Explorer7 cookies.
  • Click on the Start button, then >Control Panel>Internet Options>General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click on Delete.
  • In the Delete Browsing History box that opens, click on Delete cookies

C:\Deckard is DSS working folder. You can safely delete it. Also delete dss.exe

C:\Qoobox is ComboFix quarantine folder. You can safely delete it. Also delete Combofix.exe

C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache in a little while.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

IE-SpyAd - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. An installation tutorial is available here.

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
