Re: pop-ups and sloooow internet.
Sorry for the delay, the forum's been very busy.
Can you tell me exactly what happens when you try to run DSS? Also, can you give more detail about the popups? What sites you're getting directed to, that sort of thing...

Re: pop-ups and sloooow internet.
Hey there,
no worries on the delay; nature of the business. To answer your questions, when I run DSS.exe, I get an error message at 12% loading after the restore point saying "dss.exe has encountered an error and needs to close" This has happened even after removing the software and reinstalling the program. As far as the popups they have come and gone. It was a winfixer I THINK. I haven't had it pop-up in the last 48 hours. Is my hijackthis clean and not showing anything? thanks. |

Re: pop-ups and sloooow internet.
I'd like you to try to run DSS once again, using these instructions (this assumes dss.exe is on your desktop)
Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste this into the run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /configDe-Select: "System Restore" "Process Modules" "Backup Registry Hives" Click Scan! When finished, it should produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply. Let me know how that goes. As to your question about the HijackThis log, it's not totally clean. I'm just trying to gather more information before proceeding. As to the lack of popups now, it's possible you had WinFixer items in Temp, which DSS removed during one of it's runs.

Re: pop-ups and sloooow internet.
Let's try a different tack, then.
You are using an outdated version of Hijack This. Please delete your current version. Next, download HijackThis to your desktop Alternate link This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis Upon install, HijackThis should open for you. Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe 1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'. 2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log. 3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please post a new log with the updated version. Create a Startup List:
Create an uninstall list: With HiJackThis still open
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: pop-ups and sloooow internet.
Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.
It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- P2P - I see you have P2P software ( Limewire ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information. Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares. References for the risk of these programs are here, here and here. I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs): Need2FindBar --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked O2 - BHO: Need2Find Bar BHO - {4D1C4E81-A32A-416b-BCDB-33B3EF3617D3} - C:\Program Files\Need2Find\bar\1.bin\ND2FNBAR.DLL O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2find.com/KL/menusearch.html?p=KL Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete this folder: C:\Program Files\Need2Find --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see no evidence of an AntiVirus program on your system. This must be resolved. Connecting to the Internet without antivirus protection is a "Welcome" doormat for malware. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer. Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out. Install, update definitions, and run a full system scan. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

sorry for the delay; been sick and consumed with school, work and interning. I notice that my clock is set to military time and this happened out of nowhere and I see no option to change back to regular?

Re: pop-ups and sloooow internet.
No AntiVirus program installed still? Why is that?
