Run an online scan at Panda first, then run a scan with dss.exe.

Include these reports in your new thread:

Panda results
main.txt
an attached extra.txt

Please note that I will not have time to review those logs until tomorrow evening.

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

I cannot get the Panda scan to run...
I click on the button to begin the scan and a new window appears but it remains blank and the loading status is "done". I added the site to my trusted zone, but this hasn't changed anything--I've tried this in IE and Opera with no joy.

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

I also tried to access this scanner from my Compaq laptop that we were working on earlier, and it is blocked on there as well. I guess one of these utilities changed the internet options and I cannot load the activeX control or something of that nature... ?

In addition to those utilities listed above, I have also installed "IE Spy" and "Enough is Enough." Thanks again...

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

We'll try to figure out Panda later. For now, skip that part and run the scan with dss.exe. Post the main.txt and extra.txt

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

Let's get started.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

Also be sure to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

1. Download HostsXpert. Do not run it yet.

2. Download the attached usmc.zip file to your desktop. Do not run it yet.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Disable Windows Defender as it may interfere with the fixes below:
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, Options.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs)

CiD Help <--This program is responsible for placing the LOP infection on your system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. 'Check' the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = iexplore
O16 - DPF: {34805D32-AD89-469E-8503-A5666AEE4333} - http://207.188.7.150/1341b71e5198ce4...tzip/RdxIE.cab
O16 - DPF: {41F31718-2B9D-4F76-85E2-DD11BBA99F8D} - http://install.spywarelabs.com/DistI...2501031120.EXE

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please ensure Hidden files and folders are viewable:

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click OK.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Using 'My Computer', navigate to and delete the following Folders

C:\Program Files\ NewDotNet(2)
C:\Program Files\ NewDotNet(2)(2)
C:\Documents and Settings\Jeremy Curcio\Application Data\ plan seek name

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Unzip HostsXpert to it's own folder.
  • Run HostsXpert.exe
  • Click "Make Writable?" in the upper left corner.
  • Click "Restore MS Hosts file" and then click OK.
  • Close HostsXpert.
  • Note: If a custom Hosts file was in place, you'll have to edit those entries back in.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on the usmc.zip folder, then double click on the .reg file within. Click yes to allow it to merge into your registry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot your system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, we're going to use HostsXpert to download and replace the hosts file with a legit hosts blocking tool. The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
  • Run HostsXpert.exe
  • Click "Make Writable?" in the upper left corner.
  • Click "Download"
  • Click "MVPs Hosts"
  • Click "Replace"
  • Click "OK"
  • Click "Make ReadOnly"
  • Close HostsXpert.
  • Note: If a custom Hosts file was in place, you'll have to edit those entries back in.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's see if this online scanner will work for you:

Using Internet Explorer, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Download fl.zip
  • Extract the contents of the fl.zip to a new folder on Desktop.
  • Within the folder, locate & double-click fl.bat.
  • It should produce a report at c:\findlop.txt. Post the contents of the report in your next reply
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with HijackThis and save the log.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

Kaspersky results
c:\findlop.txt
New HijackThis log
Update on system behavior

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

Okay, the "R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = iexplore" entry was no longer on the HJT results, so I'm assuming it was already repaired/removed by one of my other utilities. However, the remaining two entries were on there and I fixed them as directed.

The Kaspersky online scan initialized okay, but it couldn't update the anti-virus databases because it said my internet security settings needed to be set at "medium." I tried adding it to my trusted zone, but that still didn't work, so I was forced to change it to medium--then it worked without any issues. I'm guessing IE-Spyad is the culprit for customizing my security settings?

I was reading further into the readme.txt for that program and it said it changes the security settings so cookies/ActiveX controls are blocked & it also states that there are compatibility issues with IE 7 beta (and obviously IE 7, which is what I'm running). I have this installed on my laptop, so I guess that would explain why I couldn't access the Panda scanner on either of my 2 computers.

I looked into the Zoned Out version, and it is supposed to be compatible with IE 7, but it requires you to remove IE Spyad 2 via its ".exe" file which I no longer have access to and cannot locate on the internet. What are your feelings on this one, should I just go ahead and install the Zoned Out version without removing Spyad 2?

As always, thanks for your help and the next post has your requested logs.

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

System performance seems to have improved a little bit, but not a whole lot--I did notice there were about 7 viruses found by the Kaspersky scan, however. Cleaning up my computer is obviously the highest priority and if I can't improve the performance, then at least I know it's the processor and/or memory that are the limiting factor(s)--as opposed to the spyware, viruses, etc.

Below are the logs you requested:

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

Hiya,

Delete this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ Load Defy Way Okay

This file is infected as well, I'm sorry it needs to be deleted:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeremy Curcio\My Documents\USMC\ marine25.exe

I'm not sure where you obtained the above file from but if it's important to you, may I suggest downloading it from a trusted site --> http://www.pcworld.ca/downloads/details/21462.htm

-----------------------------------------------------

Regarding IESpyAd--do you see the folder located at C:\iespy-ad ? If so, open that folder and double click on the install.bat. In the dos box that opens, you will given a choice to uninstall it. Let me know if that worked.

Sorry, I had meant to place a note next to that stating that I saw that in your first HJT log, but not in the second.

Based on that entry, even though it is gone, I feel it prudent to run this next tool. It certainly will not hurt anything to do so:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop. Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% -(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). Do not run it yet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt I'll need that in your next reply.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with HijackThis and save the log.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

C:\SDFix\Report.txt
New HijackThis log

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

Okay the Marine25 screensaver wasn't a big deal, so no issues with removing it. Thanks for locating another download site, but once you click the download link it can't find the file--once again, no worries.

I couldn't locate the IE Spyad folder and I even did a search on the system for the install.bat file, "Spyad", etc. but nothing was found. I did manage to find a copy of Spyad 2 online, so I downloaded it and the uninstaller apparently found files of it on the system because it was able to remove it successfully. Then, I downloaded Zoned Out and updated it with the latest list of sites. I also re-installed Enough is Enough--just to make sure all my security settings were back to the way they should be (since I had to manually change everything to "medium" for the online scanner). I checked the Kaspersky online scanner and it still works--without me having to change the security settings to "medium" like the last time. I'm not sure if my infections were the cause or what but either way... seems like you fixed that bug! hahaha.

In regards to system performance/behavior: definitely a noticeable improvement with the startup and overall speed, etc.

Here are my logs:

Re: PC #2: Slow Performance/10-minute Startup

Glad to hear it's running better.

These logs are clean, just a little 'housekeeping' to tend to now.

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will flush out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

**************************************************************************************

That should do it.
