Someone help me out please?

Hi there,

This is my first time posting this stuff, so hopefully it helps.
I had a bit of an issue with some spyware/trojans back in december and I am pretty sure the trojans are no more, but I'm not too certain.

So I'll post my most recent Hijackthis log and also a Kaspersky log.
These were run within the day, so they are very recent, but I just want to get everything settled and cleaned once and for all.

---Four things worth noting,

a) I went ahead and deleted the 2 .exe files found in the c:\windows\system32\ folder.
So, I deleted these guys: C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwttdlbk.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Agent.at skipped
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uqkitqfk.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Agent.at skipped

b) One other thing, I use Counterspy from time to time as I have upgraded definitions on it. In fact I used it to counter my trojans/adware back in December and it seemed to help. However, when I go to the quarantine folder it says there's nothing in quarantine. According to Kaspersky, there's a trojan in Quarantine. I navigate to the folder and lo and behold is that file, it's still there!
C:\Documents and Settings\ROCKYT~1\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\Quarantine\421207C3-4461-40F2-98FA-531D74\DF94A919-9CAB-45D1-9EAD-9D9591

c) I went ahead to c: , disk properties, system restore, cleanup to hopefully remove the old adware saved in the restore

d) When I navigate to the c:\windows\system32 folder i don't see
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyyvs.dll

****

Any help is appreciated.

Also, can anyone tell me if it is safe to simply delete a file in quarantine?
(ie: can i just use explorer and navigate to the folder/file and delete it?
it's not showing up in counterspy anymore...)

Thanks!

Re: Someone help me out please?

Hello roc278 and welcome to TSF,

Our apologies for the oversight of your thread. Thank you for your kind patience.

You are still infected. Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Re: Someone help me out please?

You're welcome, roc278.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyyvs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwttdlbk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uqkitqfk.exe
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run another online scan at Kaspersky and save the results.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

C:\ComboFix.txt
Kaspersky results

Re: Someone help me out please?

Ried,

thanks again. The following are what you've requested.
A few things worth noting first of all...

When I ran the CFScript in Combofix the computer gave an error and although I could only catch a glimpse of it (as it was already in the restart sequence) it said something about the C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyyvs.dll

Since I didn't know if this was part of the Combofix (to reboot or not) when the computer was booting back up, I started it in safe mode just to be safe and I noticed that Combofix finished up and created a log. Not sure if this matters, but just thought I'd mention it.

Also, after running the Kaspersky Online Scanner, I'm definitely still concerned. Apparently there are 4 viruses still, and 7 infected objects.
Thanks for your continued help!

Re: Someone help me out please?

Hello roc278,

It is not advisable to interrupt the ComboFix routine by triggering Safe Mode on that reboot--but it appears as though ComboFix still managed to successfully execute the CFScript.

Your logs are clean--Kaspersky is only reporting items that have been quarantined by onboard tools. We'll take care of that now, as well as a bit of final housekeeping.

Using 'My Computer', navigate to the following Folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\RockyT\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\ Quarantine<--Empty the quarantine folder.

C:\ qoobox <-- Delete this folder

-----------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-------------------------------------------------------------

If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions and helpful links:

Ensure Windows Auto Update is Enabled
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will flush out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

**************************************************************************************

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
  • It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER
Understanding and Using Firewalls

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

-----------------------------------------------------

Follow the list above and the potential for infection will reduce dramatically.
