Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Hello,
I am having some issues with my computer and I was hoping some one could help me out.
I first noticed the issues when I was Googling something. I clicked the the link and it took me to a completely different page. It does this with just about every link I click and I have to keep pushing the back button and clicking the link several times to get to the page I want.
Also, when I run Pest Patrol it fails to finish the scan everytime giving me an EAccess violation. DSS.EXE will not run either. Ad-Aware SE personal does the same thing. They all seem to lock up while they are scanning temporary internet folder. I have deleted everything in the folder and still it happens when it gets to that point.
When I am using windows explorer to search for files or look at whats on my hard drive I get an error it just says it encountered an error and needs to shut down.
As I said before, I cannot get dss.exe to run so I am posting my hijackthis log and my activescan log.
I hope you can help me.

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Hello and Welcome. Apologies for any delay in replying, but we have been rather busy lately.

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download FixWareout from on of these sites:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...Fixwareout.exe

http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ) into this topic in your next reply.

**If you receive an error message while trying to run FixWareout, copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, and run FixWareout again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click smitfraudfix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HJT v2 is out of Beta now. Please uninstall/delete it, and get the latest version.

Please download HijackThis to your desktop

Alternate link

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please return with results from:

FixWareout(C:\FixWareout\report.txt)
SmtifraudFix(C:\rapport.txt)
HijackThis

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{46185288-D0B5-4085-A755-B26952FDF9A6}: NameServer = 85.255.116.146,85.255.112.88
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.146 85.255.112.88
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.146 85.255.112.88

Close HijackThis now.

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

I fixed the files you said to and was surfing a little to see if it was any better but i started getting the pop ups and page redirectes again. I ran a hijack this scan and those 3 items I had fixed came right back. Windows explorer seems to be better though.

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Please run FixWareout again, using the same instructions.

Do not run dnsbak.reg this time if your connection is lost, unless the following fails:

Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, While some connection services will require them.

These instructions are basically for home users.

Please go to Start -> Control Panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available one some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

I did as you instructed and it seems that everything is working great now!
Is there anything else I need to do?
I was wondering if what I can do to prevent re-infection and if you could recommend any good free anti-virus software (my norton is expired:().

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Glad to.

Norton can be somewhat difficult to remove completely. Before uninstalling it from Add/Remove programs, see the link below for futher cleanup instructions.

Process to do this would be to download a new AntiVirus installer file, download the Norton Removal tool, disconnect from the internet, uninstall Norton, run the removal tool, restart the system, install your new AntiVirus, reconnect to the internet, update the AntiVirus program's definitions, and run a full system scan.

Please use the instructions on this page to completely uninstall your Norton Products.

Here are several links to excellent Free AntiVirus programs....I've been quite happy with all of them, and like Avira a lot right now.
Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.

Once you've done that, please post a new HijackThis log. I'll have more instructions for you at that time.

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

I removed norton and installed Avira PersonalEdition Classic. I had a couple of concerns though. While installing, it gave me a failed to install error twice but continued to go on. Was that b/c it could not update due to not being connected to the internet, or was that a problem?

Also it says that it is only valid untill the end of November and that it does not protect me from spyware. Should I go ahead and get the premium edition?

Anyways, heres my latest HijackThis log:

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

I don't think that error was due to you being disconnected at the time. Updating takes place after the install is complete.

It appears as though it's active, from looking at your log. Is the red umbrella icon in your system tray? Is the application giving you any error messages now? Were you able to update it and run a scan?

As far as the expiration notice goes, if you click on the plus sign next to that, you'll see that you'll automatically have your license extended 4 weeks prior to that date.

For AntiSpyware, you seem protected. WinPatrol, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware.

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Yes, I have the icon in my system tray and it ran and scanned OK. I had not noticed the license extension there, lol. Thanks.

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Ok, good....let's continue

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is to look for any remnants:

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

Good work...there's a file I'd like more opinions on:

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • On the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Next to the browse button you'll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy/paste the following in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\p7d12jda.ini

  • Then click the "Send File " button just below.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Re: Pop-ups Page redirects and windows explorer issues

I am running the scan now, but it has been going for an hour and a half now and still no results at all. Is this normal?
