Question "Downloader" Virus...

Hi all,

Last night/Early this morning my mom ran a full system scan using Norton Internet Security (NIS) on the family laptop and the results turned up a Virus that is simply called "Downloader". NIS failed to remove the virus, so she tried to remove the virus manually using NIS' instructions, this also failed. I took a look at the laptop this afternoon, ran Spybot and Ad-Aware, both came up clean so I ran another NIS scan and saved the log which I will attach along with the other required logs. In my opinion, I think it's a false positive but I'll let you, the professionals, make that decision.

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

I would tend to agree with you, that it's a likely false positive. Your logs show no sign of infection.

Downloader
Virus ID: 26637
Type: Compressed
Risk: High (High Stealth, High Removal, High Performance, High Privacy)
Categories: Virus
State: Remove Failed
-----------
1 File
[maximizer_startup.exe] inside of [c:\program files\notebook maximizer\update.exe] - Infected

Sure, it's a downloader, looks like it's designed to update notebook maximizer,

http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/ma...0Maximizer.php

and you appear to have a Toshiba notebook, though I don't see that program in your extra.txt Add/Remove Programs section

To be more certain, you can scan the file here:

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • At the top of the page you'll find a "Browse" button. Click the "Browse" button and browse to this file in BOLD:

    c:\program files\notebook maximizer\update.exe

  • Click "Open".
  • Then click the "Send" button at the top of the VirusTotal page.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

You may want to notify Norton support about this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While you're here, you should do this:

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.2_13
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall previous version when you update, nor tell you that you should.

Leave Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 alone.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also see you have Limewire and µTorrent installed.

We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

TetonBob,

Thanks for your help. I ran the file through VirusTotal as you suggested... Symantec reported the file as "Downloader" and The Hacker reported the file as "Backdoor/IRC.Zapchast". All other scanners reported the file as clean.

I've just checked the Symantec website and I can't seem to find a support contact or e-mail regarding the false-positive, most of the support is for installation/uninstallation and connectivity problems. Do you know of an e-mail or other way to contact the proper technical support?

Limewire and uTorrent on this computer? I just checked the add/remove and I don't see either of these programs on the laptop. On my desktop I have uTorrent, but not limewire.

Other than the false-positive does the log look fairly clean? My mom would like to know which programs she doesn't need, or useless programs in the startup.

Thanks again,
Brandon

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

Ack....Brandon, my apologies for that....You're clearly right, you don't have any of those programs I mentioned.

The log looks pretty clean to me.

As far as how to get a sample to them, I'd have to look into it more, or suggest you call their tech support. I don't use Norton.

We can run this online scan, to see if there's anything lurking....

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

Say, Brandon....you mention NIS, but I see McAfee services in the log, not Norton and neither of them show up in the Add/Remove from DSS.

Which are showing in your Add/Remove panel?

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

Funny you should mention that.

The laptop's previous owner, my uncle Kevin as you can tell from the documents folder name, used McAfee on the laptop while he worked for an insurance company. Long story short, he lost his job, needed money, sold us the laptop and my mom (tried to) uninstall McAfee but it was being stubborn and some components of the program were left over, if not the entire program it's self. I don't think the program is running in the background, but I could be wrong, I never use the laptop. NIS shows up in the Add/Remove panel and I don't see any traces of McAfee. I also forgot to mention that yes, it is a Toshiba laptop, and I have the Kaspersky online scanner running as I type this.

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

Here's an external link on procedures to completely remove McAfee.

http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=71525

Short story:

All '05, '06, and '07 McAfee products
Download the McAfee Removal Tool.

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y.

<edit> Obviously, please don't do this until the online scan is complete</edit>

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

Please ensure you've rebooted after running the McAfee removal tool, and then post a new HijackThis log.

Kaspersky is clean as a whistle.

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

That looks much better, McAfee is gone, and Norton is now showing as active.

This is leftover from Yahoo Companion:

Open HijackThis (NOT DSS) and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other than that, I think you're in good shape. I've got to get some rest, and will check in tomorrow.

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

O.K., I removed the previously mentioned entry using Hijack This.

Anything else?

Re: "Downloader" Virus...

I think not...from what I've seen, you should be able to ignore that find by NIS.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
