Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
Being in safe mode with networking is a vulnerable place to be, as you can connect to the internet or networks with no active protection.
Please make sure your machine is in normal mode unless otherwise requested. You still show signs of infection.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
Looking better.....a few more details to take care of.
Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Toolbar, Viewpoint Media Player<<<this is considered foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546 Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete this folder: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file) O2 - BHO: MSVPS System - {8E6CFDFE-79A8-421C-B854-04081690CE6B} - C:\WINDOWS\ddesupport.dll (file missing) O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\3.8.0\ViewBarBHO.dll O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Viewpoint\Toolbar Runtime\3.8.0\IEViewBar.dll O3 - Toolbar: Protection Bar - {DF4E7A0C-E233-4906-B4C1-A404356541FF} - (no file) O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbar...p=ZUxdm458MBUS O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...1.0.0.15-3.cab O16 - DPF: {B64F4A7C-97C9-11DA-8BDE-F66BAD1E3F3A} - http://contraviruspro.com/cab/install158.cab O21 - SSODL: msole - {6BAFA2FF-4E54-4585-BAC4-E674C1FF4D59} - C:\WINDOWS\msole.dll (file missing) O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - file:///C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.htm Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

Once the license accepted, reset to 100%. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop. Double-click smitfraudfix.exe to start the tool. Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter" and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present). Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
uninstalled/removed all the Viewpoint stuff. Ran HJT and checked the items you listed and clicked "FIX". Tried to run the Kaspersky Online scan, but as soon as I click the button, I get an error at the bottom of the screen, and if I click the error I get a box stating "Internet Explorer Script error" and I have to close the dialog box 48 times to clear it. can this be corrected? |

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
First, restart your computer.
Then, make sure your Internet Explorer security settings are set to default, as indicated in the image below. Access via Control Panel>Internet Options>Security Tab>Internet Zone>default level>reset all zones to default level>Apply>OK ![]() Also.... * Open Internet Explorer * Open the <Tools> menu * Select the Internet Options> menu item * Open the <Advanced> tab * Check the box next to "Disable script debugging * Remove the check next to "Display a notification about every script error" * Click the <OK> button Then, try again.

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
For now, please bypass the Kaspersky scan, and provide the log from SmifraudFix and new HijackThis log.

yes, 48 individual Internet Explorer Script Error boxes. Each one had no information, for example:

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
OK, thanks....what version of Internet Explorer are you using? What if you don't click on the Error on Page message? Does the scanner page load at all? Also, to to double check, you did this, right?:
* Open Internet Explorer * Open the <Tools> menu * Select the Internet Options> menu item * Open the <Advanced> tab * Check the box next to "Disable script debugging * Remove the check next to "Display a notification about every script error" * Click the <OK> button Let's do a bit of deep cleaning with an onboard scanner, and use SmitfraudFix to remove what it's found. Download AVG Anti Spyware
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter. The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot into Normal Windows. The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:\rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool. Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter. Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- See if you can run this online scan: Go here and do the BitDefender online virus scan.
Or this one: Go to Trend Micro Housecall Europe. This online scanner supports most browsers and operating systems. Click on Check My PC now, and follow the prompts. If there is an Auto Clean option given, please select it. Save any results possible, and post them here. --------------------------------------------------- Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Then post the following logs in your next reply... AVG Anti-Spyware C:\rapport.txt (log from the tool) Any online scan performed Hijackthis log

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
To answer the first part of your reply,"....what version of Internet Explorer are you using?
I was using IE 7. Really weird thing. Wasn't sure what version I was using and wanted to make sure I reported it correctly, so I started IE, went to Help, then About. Same crap happened! Script error. 48 clicks to go away. Then the screen shows IE 7, but NO OTHER DETAILS.... Version is BLANK.... Cypher Strength BLANK.... Product ID BLANK! What the ****! ........What if you don't click on the Error on Page message? Does the scanner page load at all? No The page does not change, until I decide to do the 48 clicks ......Also, to to double check, you did this, right?: * Open Internet Explorer * Open the <Tools> menu * Select the Internet Options> menu item * Open the <Advanced> tab * Check the box next to "Disable script debugging * Remove the check next to "Display a notification about every script error" * Click the <OK> button Yes. I did them all in the exact order listed Now, to the tasks you prescribed. Did the AVG thing, did not run. Did the ATF thing. Rebooted in Safe Mode and ran AVG. Found some stuff. Report saved, is attached below. Ran Smitfraudfix, chose Clean, rebooted to Normal, and log file is below. Ran Smitfraudfix again and used "3', and followed steps. Could not get bitdefender to work, tried Housecall Europe and noticed that Firefox was supported! Downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.5 Went back to Housecall Europe and ran the scan. It found viruses and malware, automatically removed them, and suggested another scan to make sure. I didn't see an option for a report, so I had to rescan. Once that was over the screen reported that all was clear. Ran another HJT and is included below --------------------------------------------------------- AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 5:23:41 PM 7/22/2007 + Scan result: C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\Program Files\Seekmo Programs\Seekmo Toolbar\SeekmoTBUninstaller.exe.vir -> Adware.Agent : Cleaned with backup (quarantined). Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
Good choice on Firefox....I use it all the time. With IETab addon, you can even get Windows Updates and run online scans which require IE.
OK, in light of what you're telling me, I'd say you have a corrupt install of IE. It happens. I'd rather direct you to the folks in the Internet Explorer forum, and have them help you troubleshoot that issue. An uninstall and reinstall of IE7 may be the best way to solve it, but I prefer if you get more eyes on that part of the issue. As far as malware goes, these logs and your report from housecall now leave me feeling good about that. C:\QooBox\ is ComboFix's quarantine folder. You can safely delete it Please also delete ComboFix.exe C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be reseting/clearing the cache in a little while. Please Also delete SmitfraudFix, as you should no longer need it. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
I think I would like to use Firefox exclusively. Can I leave IE alone? I realize it might not function as it should, but if it is not "infected" but just "corrupted", I think I would rather leave it as is and use Firefox unless that poses a risk somehow.I may visit the IE forum later for a stab at resolving those issues.
I did the steps you suggested for resetting the hidden folders and for clearing out the System Restore cache. I will report back in a few days to let you know of the FINAL results, but I can already see a drastic improvement. You sure do know how to help out someone who needs it. I will follow your advice on the suggested software. By the way, I now have Avast antivirus AND AVG antivirus on here. Which is better? Keep both or delete one? I like Avast, but if isn't taking care of business then should I keep the AVG? Let me know your opinion, and thanks for saving me! |

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
Glad I could help.
We installed AVG Anti-Spyware, have you now installed AVG Free AntiVirus as well? Please do not run more than one AV at a time. It can cause system conflict. Of the free ones, I prefer Active Virus shield or Avira (AntiVir), though I've used Avast and AVG, and they are also very good. Really a matter of choice, and preference of the interface. Choose one, uninstall the other. Thing is, an AV alone will not protect you from visiting suspect websites, clicking suspicious links in IM or email, or downloading and executing a shared file. It takes you as well as the software, to protect your machine. Not saying you're doing this, just trying to make you aware that software is not a "silver bullet". If we invite the wolf in through the door, he will dine. There are other Windows/MS programs which may not function well with IE in a bad state, so I'd suggest continuing with the troubleshooting while you're in the mode.

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
I mistook AVG as antivirus. I have the AVG Anti-Spyware, not Anti-Virus. I am using Avast! anti-virus, and if it is OK I think I will keep it.
You mentioned five other spyware tools, should I use them all? I have used zonealarm before, but it sometimes seemed to forget settings and block my network. Since my wife also uses this computer, I don't want to install something that she can't deal with. I think I'll give the other one a try. I agree that software cannot do it all, but unfortunately this computer is used by more than one person and I can't always be around to prevent the types of browsing that gives virii and malware an opportunity to invade. I truly appreciate all you have done to restore my computer to usefullnes again, as well as teaching me some important lessons on maintaining security. Thanks. |

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, IE Spy-Ad and the MVPS hosts file help prevent malware from being installed in the first place, while using very little in the way of system resources.
Spybot Search and Destroy can be a nice supplement to AVG Anti-Spyware. Run scans once a week or so. That should be sufficient. Hope that helps.

Re: need advice on HIJACKTHIS log
I see that Geekgirl and you have confirmed what we were thinking here, that an uninstall and reinstall of IE7 were required.
As your issue appears to be resolved, I'll now archive this thread.

Thanks to tetonbob & Geekgirl
All my problems resolved! tetonbob did a fantastic job ridding my drive of some serious problems, and Geekgirl got right to the solution on the first post!
It is so comforting to know that no problem is beyond the capabilities of the folks at techsupportforum.com. Thanks again! |
