Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

other items of note:

This is my gf's computer, so I'll probably be having her follow the directions. Speak in small words and use lots of pictures ;)

She has some weather program installed that she seems to like, but that I think is spyware - she may want to keep it. She also has some sort of desktop stuff, a webshots program and some calendar.

I don't notice any popups or virus like behaviors, but it does run pretty slow and when I opened msconfig to see what's starting up, there's a ton of items that I don't recognize in it. She needs help!

Over 48 hour bump - I know you guys are busy :) I was able to remove the weather junk, but I still think there's some lingering spyware, etc that I can't remove with spybot or adware.

Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

  1. Download combofix.exe to your desktop.
  2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

Hi, a quick question for you....did you alter the output of ComboFix log in any way?

Also, post a HijackThis log as requested, please.

Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

I did not alter the combofix log, though she emailed it to me. I'm having my GF run the reports, so I can only post as fast as her :) If there's an issue with any of these reports, I can do this stuff when I go to her place next Tuesday.

Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

Ok, I think the email compressed the ComboFix log, there are usually more blank lines in between the data. Makes is a bit tougher to read, but we'll persevere.

The msconfig items I see are all legit.

P2P - I see you have P2P software ( Limewire) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall previous version when you update, nor tell you that you should.

Leave Java(TM) 6 Update 2 alone, as it is the most recent.

reboot your machine after the uninstall.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {56163d86-be0f-4e3c-8f51-949c6cd94830} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\DLPd32.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: dbiis - C:\WINDOWS\java\CLASSES \dbiis.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: DLPd32 - DLPd32.dll (file missing)

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

Please download the Suspicious File Packer http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and run it.
Paste the following list of bad files into the Suspicious File Packer window:
C:\I386\ssqrqon.dll
Allow SFP to pack the files by clicking Continue.
This will generate a CAB archive on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab.
Please submit it to this site http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/subm....php?channel=4 and include a link to this topic in the message.
You can then delete the requested-files.cab file from your desktop, once you have uploaded it to the above recipient.

Please also post a new HijackThis log here.

Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

Thanks for the submission

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:
File::
C:\I386\ssqrqon.dll
Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How is the system behaving?

Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

System seems ok, sure starts up a lot quicker, but not sure if that's just because that weather program is gone. I don't use the computer much, so I can't really be more specific.

Edit: I noticed some Viewpoint entries in the combofix report I sent, so I was looking through the Add/Remove programs. I noticed "My Way Search Assistant" listed in there that I thought I removed before. It doesn't have any buttons to let me try to remove it again. Might be one of the viruses Kaspersky detected?

Re: very slow computer, lots of unknown items in msconfig startup

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Highlight the following entries if present, then click "Delete"
  • My Way Search Assistant
  • When it asks if you are sure, click "Yes"

Delete this file:

C:\Documents and Settings\Julie\Incomplete\T-311774-_live_ the bus stop bt 33.wma

Kaspersky finds it as an infected downloader.

If Viewpoint is in Add/Remove, uninstall it.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\Julie\Application Data\Viewpoint

Other than that, your logs appear clean.

You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

C:\QooBox\ is ComboFix's quarantine folder. You can safely delete it

Please also delete ComboFix.exe

C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be reseting/clearing the cache in a little while.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial
  • FIREWALL
If you do not have a firewall, here are a couple of great free ones available for personal use. Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Thanks for helping me clean off her system! I'll finish up the rest of this when I'm over there next.
