Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

It may have coincided with the malware, but a Windows Installer popup is not typically a sign of infection by itself.

http://www.google.com/search?q=Windo...taller%20popup

Please do this:

Go to Start>Run and type or copy/paste services.msc then press Enter

Scroll down and locate Windows Installer.

Double Click on it.

Tell me what the Startup Type and Service Status is.

See this link for MS description of this issue:

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Change the Status to Stopped.

Let me know if that helps.

Failing that, I think you're going to be in better hands asking for help resolving this issue in the XP forum.

Let them know you've been here, and have been cleared of malware.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

NEW SYMPTOM!!!

Think I may still need your help.

IE can only disply pages for about 10 minutes time of start-up.
Likewise Outlook can only fetch mail for about 10 minutes after start-up.
I tried turning of COMODO firewall... no help.
I tried enabling Microsoft's firewall after exiting COMODO FIrewall... no help.

Prior to this syptom I had removed an unwanted Itunes program.

Help.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Just as additional info. This lock-out occurs whether I log in a myself or as Admin.

Also, I cannot spawn any other web pages (such as Manageing Attachments from this forum.)

All it says is cannot display page. Liekwise Outlook will fetch e-mail a dozen times if I invoke the Send/Receive manually... but only for about ten minutes. Then it can no long connect to my ISP (Time-Warner).

Shut down Outlook and restart it.... Works okay for about ten minutes.

Very difficult to maintain link to even this forum.

REgards.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Really, though some of this may be the result of the infection, as I've already suggested you'll be in better hands trying to get your OS back in order if you talk to the folks in the Windows XP forum.

You said you had to reinstall several applications.

With some infections, it's better to backup any critical data, format and start again.

It seems as though you have OS and application corruption, and that is not really my area of expertise.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Let's have another look....

Please run Deckard's System Scanner once again, this time using these instructions:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste this into the run box & click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
Click on "Check All"

Click Scan!

When finished, it shall produce two logs for you. Post those logs in your next reply.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Right....no new malware has snuck in that I can see.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I still think your best option would be to seek assistance from the XP forum, short of reinstalling applications such as Office or IE7, a repair install, or a format and clean install.

The only thing I see which needs to be addressed in your logs is this is still present in your Add/Remove list, it should be uninstalled:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Hmmm..

I did remove all old Java 2 stuff and installed Java 2 6.. somethng or another.

I'm also working with the XP Forum as you advised we haven't discovered the soucre of the problem although the gent says he's seen it once before.

Is there perhaps something in my firewall settings or other spyware setting that eventually blocks internet access after some time or when IE tries to spawn anther winow (such as active X)?

Another observation:

You said....

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

..... Can't find this when I call up Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs. All that's there is the newer Java we updated earlier.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Since Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 could not be found in the Add/Remove programs window....

I manually deleted all all three copies of Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 , re-ran insatllation Java version 6 update ... again and rebooted.

A re-run of DSS still shows Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 but I can't find where on my machine it could residing or from where its being loaded.

Reagrds.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

As long as it's uninstalled and not present in Add/Remove, it's not a concern then.

Wonder if you've rebooted since the uninstall of Java 1.4.2?

It seems like you're being helped on the installer issue.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

You are correct in that I'm dealing with XP Forum for the installer issue.

I have rebooted since removing all the older JAVA stuff yet DSS Extra continues to show it is still present.

Alos, I went into MSCONFIG and turned off AVG and COMODO - leaving only McAfee. Seems I can now spawn IE7 windows and Outlook can fetch e-mail (at least for the last 15 minutes... 5 minutes longer than before). Parhaps McAfee and Comodo were banging heads????

I'll try some various combinations of the security programs till I come across a series that play well together.

BTW... Thanks for all of your help. I woudl have been eaten alive if not for you.

Now... Installer Window pop-ups....Hmmm.

Thank you and best regards.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Whoops, ya know, I overlooked that in your postings.

It's highly likely Comodo and McAfee were conflicting. Once should never have more than one firewall or AV installed at one time. Some would say active, but in my experience, simply having more than one installed can cause issues.

If you like McAfee, uninstall Comodo completely, and see if that helps.

As far as DSS still showing Java 1.4.2 as installed, I'll Deckard, but I feel confident you can safely ignore that.

With the Windows Installer, you may just have to experiment with your Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and the programs you recently had to reinstall until you find the one which stops the doggone thing. Wish I could be more scientific. As I already mentioned, usually those popups come with some sort of program ID, making it much simpler to troubleshoot.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Okay, it really is there even if you can't see using the normal method. Copy the following blue text, then go to Start>Run and paste (Control-V), then click OK. Does this show a dialog box or anything? If it offers to uninstall, please do so.
MsiExec.exe /I{7148F0A8-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142030}

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

It shows a dialog box titled Windows Installer

"! This action only valid for products that are currently installed."

Regards.

Re: Constant web browser spawns w/advertisments

Okay, then it probably did uninstall but it didn't erase itself from the registry. Run HijackThis and go to Config, then Misc Tools at the top.
  • Click the button labelled "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Find Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03, select it, and then click the Delete This Entry button.
  • Close HijackThis.
This will remove the entry from your system so it won't show up in DSS or HJT any longer.
