Good Samritan needs Help

Hello All,

I made the mistake of offering to help a family member with her computer. The system resides at an Art studio for young people and as a result is terribly infested. I have removed most of the problems, but there are a few stragglers I am having some difficulty with.

I think these are related to Clickspring/PurityScan/etc.

1. Download & Save this file to Desktop -> http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...a/ComboFix.exe

2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log & a fresh HJT log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:

Click OK & have it scan My Computer
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. We only require a report from it.

This is to be performed after you have posted the required logs.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 - http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Here is the latest Hijack this log.

I have attempted to run the Kapersky online virus scan 3 times now. The window seems to close out before completion, without a report. The last time it went to about 90%, I looked away for a minute or two and when I looked back it had closed... I was not doing anything on the computer at the time....

FWIW- Before Kapersky 'Closed/Crashed' there was apparently 5 Visuses found. I might try running the scan again in the morning.

If Kaspersky isn't working for you, please try this other scanner:

Please perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at this website - http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

Under SCANNING OPTIONS, use the following Settings:

Action options - Report only
Second option - Report only

Once finished, click on the Details button to view the results.
To the upper right of the results you will see an option saying "Click here to export the scan results" Post the log of the scan results in your next reply

Good Morning,

Before I went to bed I restarted Kaspersky, when I woke up an hour later the scan was nearly complete (97%).... I watched it for a bit and when it had completely finished finished drive C: and moved on to removable media. (The only media was in the CD-Rom drive which contained an XP install/recovery disk),I decided to stop it, rather than risk another crash.

C:\QooBox\ is ComboFix's quarantine folder. You can safely delete it

C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be reseting/clearing the cache in a little while

Now that your system is clean, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE - (System Volume Information folder)
Go to Start → Run → type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter
- Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
- Click Apply
Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click OK
DISABLE THE VIEWING OF SYSTEM FILES
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
- Untick - Show hidden files and folder
- Tick - Hide file extensions for known types

SECURING INTERNET EXPLORER
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.

    - Change 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to Prompt
    - Change 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to Disable
    - Change 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable
    - Change 'Installation of desktop items' to Prompt
    - Change 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to Prompt
    - Change 'Navigate sub-frames across different domains' to Prompt

  - If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Select OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update. Updating Java: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 - http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications". Click the "Download" button to the right. Check the box that says: "*Accept* License Agreement". The page will refresh. Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed. Please delete it C:\QooBox\ is ComboFix's quarantine folder. You can safely delete it C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Change 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to Prompt Change 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to Disable Change 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable Change 'Installation of desktop items' to Prompt Change 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to Prompt Change 'Navigate sub-frames across different domains' to Prompt When all these changes have been made, click on the OK button. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button. Select OK to exit the Internet Properties page. ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
