Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

  1. Download combofix.exe to your desktop.

  2. While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis and other tools from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
    • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
    • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
    • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
    • Expand the "Tools" menu.
    • Click "Resident".
    • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
    • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
    • See this link for a tutorial

  3. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  4. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Sorry about that, somehow missed your reply. Most of the infection seems cleared up, let's do this more thorough cleaning.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • At the top of the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Next to the browse button you'll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy/paste the following in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kwinsndt.exe

  • Then click the "Send" button at the top of the VirusTotal page.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Then repeat as above for the following files in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kwinsndu.exe
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I see you have AVG Anti-Spyware already. Please update it's definitions, and run a scan where I have placed it in this fix.

Run AVG Anti-Spyware
  • From the main screen, click on update, then click the Start
    update
    button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update
    successful")
  • select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "do Not Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware. DO NOT scan yet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save Link As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Thanks Tetonbob,
Here are the scan logs you asked for. I had a problem with BFU in that I could not download the alcanshorty.bfu file... the BFU.exe downloaded fine, but there was nothing attached to the alcanshorty link in the directions so I skipped that step.

Anyway, thanks for taking a look... let me know what we need to do next. Also, a couple months back I uninstalled my Norton AV Corporate Edition...I was able to get most of it, but see there are still some Norton AV files around and in my registry...any suggestions you have to get rid of them are appreciated!

Virus Scan and HJT on this post... Panda and AVGAS are attached txt files.

Thanks, Harl

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Hi Harl -

Not sure I follow you here:

Quote:
I had a problem with BFU in that I could not download the alcanshorty.bfu file... the BFU.exe downloaded fine, but there was nothing attached to the alcanshorty link in the directions so I skipped that step.
When I right click on the alcan shorty link above that's in Red and says Right-Click Here

I'm given the exact options I've stated....save link as.

You should then be able to download (save) the target as a .bfu file to the location of your choice (in this case, we want C:\BFU, alongside the BFU.exe).

If you still need help with this, I've attached it in a zip folder to this post.

Unzip it to the same location as you've placed the BFU.exe and follow the instructions above to execute it.

Delete these files also, while in safe mode to run the BFU script:

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Go to Start>Run then copy and paste, or type the following, then press Enter:

regsvr32 /u occache.dll

Click OK on the message which pops up.

Delete these files//folders if present:

c:\windows\downloaded program files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.15-3.inf
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kwinsndt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kwinsndu.exe

Go to Start>Run then copy and paste, or type the following, then press Enter:

regsvr32 occache.dll

Click OK on the message which pops up.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{07B18EAB-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA}]
Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back in normal mode:

Create an uninstall list:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the button " Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from the notepad file into your post

--------------------------------

Please use the instructions on this page to completely uninstall your Norton Products.

Let me know how that all goes.

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Thanks Tetonbob,
What happens to me when I rightclick on the alcanshorty link, the "save file as.." is light gray (not an usable option).

I'll get to work on the rest of the stuff you sent me...Thanks! I'll also try the zip file and let you know how that goes.

Thanks, again...will be back to you shortly.

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Tetonbob,
Ok, thanks. I was able to work through all of your instructions as well as use the BFU. Here is my HJT uninstall file as requested. Things seem to be working much better, but still have a little Norton AV residue that I can't seem to get rid of...i.e. the norton products are still on my add/remove list and won't remove. Additionally, when I log into outlook for mail, I get the following msg..." The add-in "C:\program files\ Symantec_client_security \Symatec Antivirus could not be installed or loaded...."

Much appreciate your help over this weekend. -Harl

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Norton is notoriously difficult to get rid of. I try not to support it for that reason.

Did you follow the link I gave you in my last post?

You may need to contact them if you can't remove all parts of it using the Norton Removal Tool.

Here is a link regarding your specific issue:

http://entkb.symantec.com/security/o...116454248.html

Let me know how that goes, and post a new HijackThis log.

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Thanks Again,
I used the link that you sent me...it had me find and delete an "extend.dat" file which I was able to do, but it did not make the problem go away. I'll keep plugging on in.

Here's my HJT.

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Hi Harl -

Not sure if you answered this....did you first try the solution Norton offers here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl=

Let me know how that goes....

Other than that, your logs appear clean. I'll post some final instructions as far as the malware removal goes...

We still have a few items to address.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

ShopperReports

You may receive a notice indicating it's been uninstalled already, would you like to have it removed from the list. Say Yes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C:\QooBox\ is ComboFix's quarantine folder. You can safely delete it

C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be reseting/clearing the cache in a little while.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Thanks Tetonbob,
Again, really appreciate your help. I did try the norton removal tool a couple times but no joy. In fact, all of the Norton and symantec programs are still listed in the Add/Remove list but when I click on the remove button, nothing happens? I know all the guts of the programs are gone but can't get the last bits out.

Went through the rest of you instructions...anything else to do from here?

Thanks.

Harl

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Hi Harl -

There's a couple ways of removing those last Norton items from the list, but it's a pretty convoluted trail to root out everything. You may want to ask Symantec, but I'm not sure how effective that will be.

Here's a possibly helpful link which shows links to various manual uninstall procedures for different Norton/Symantec products....

http://www.hku.hk/cc/faq/virus/uninstall-NAV2.htm

Not sure what version of Norton Corporate you had....try these links as well:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02081213583048

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...2kb.nsf&view=0

If Norton uses the Windows installer (not sure if it does), you may be able to use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Locate and run msicuu2.exe to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Locate and launch the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the Start menu.
From the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility window, locate the application in the list and click the Remove button.
Once the application has been removed, click the Exit button to close the utility

-------------------------------------------

To simply remove the items from the Add/Remove list, you can use a tool within HijackThis.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Highlight the appropriate entries if present, then click "Delete"
  • When it asks if you are sure, click "Yes"

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

Alrighty... That looked like it rid me of most of the norton stuff...at least it is not on my add/remove list anymore. Thank you much

I made a system restore just to lock in what we've done over the last couple days. Anything else I need to do?

You folks are great!

Re: Infected by Think-Adz (and maybe others)

That should do it.

Glad to have helped.
