SmitfraudC.Toolbar888 - stuck in my registry - help

Hi All,

A quick Hello and straight into - HELP!

The oh so lovely SmitfraudC.Toolbar888 has gripped my system. I have used AVG Spyware remover, Adaware, SpyBot Search & Destroy and VundoFix - to no avail.

I have downloaded an installed Hijackthis and have produced the following log. I hope this helps someone to help me - I really don't want to have to wipe the system and start from scratch.

Having run spybot several times it says it just cannot remove from my registry - if I delete this registry item will it kill the PC? From memory it was along the lines of ..\Windows\Software\aldd and then two reg items within this dir.

Re: SmitfraudC.Toolbar888

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please do not create new threads for the same issue. We try to get to as many as we can, and we generally work from oldest to newest. I've merged your two threads.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download combofix.exe to your desktop. We'll use this shortly.

S& D Spybot's Tea Timer

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • See this link for a tutorial

Run ComboFix

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click smitfraudfix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Thumbs Up Re: SmitfraudC.Toolbar888

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I have run the downloads as requested on my system. See below for outcome logs:

I have also just run SpyBot S&D again to check the system and it found no threats whatsoever - does this mean it's gone completely? The system is actually my other half and he's now paranoid that the keylogger is going to get him - can I set his mind at rest just yet?

Thanks again

Re: SmitfraudC.Toolbar888

Okay, ignore my joy of it possibly being fixed - spoke too soon! Rebooted PC - re-ran spybot and it's back - so it nearly went!

Cheers

Re: SmitfraudC.Toolbar888

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall previous version when you update, nor tell you that you should.

Leave Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 alone, as it is the most recent version.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yxyfxtcx.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{0854EE9F-D7D2-4401-AB8C-8FC9BD0B8D9A}]

Save this as ComboFix-Do.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where exactly is SpyBot finding these items?

Run SpyBot check for problems, fix all red items, when its finished right click and choose copy results (not full report) to clipboard and paste that back here please.

I ran spybot after all this and it found 1 issue which was a tracking cookie, which it fixed. I rebooted and re-ran spybot - it completed successfully without issue. I then shut down completely and booted from fresh just to be sure. Windows Firewall keeps asking me to block/unblock Skype and Microsoft ActiveSync so not sure if there is still an underlying issue. I have re-run spybot after the fresh boot and again no issues found.

Given the Kaspersky scan which seemed to find a lot - is this it, is it gone? Or is it lurking in hidden depths that even spybot struggles to get to? I really need to be sure as far as the keylogging especially as my other half is a bit of an ebayer and so uses his system for secure transactions - mainly via paypal but does occassionally shop elsewhere. Just need some peace of mind if that's at all possible.

Really, really appreciate your help so far. Please let me know if there is anything else you need me to do and what you feel the outcome of the above is.

Eternally grateful, Candice

Re: SmitfraudC.Toolbar888

Hi Candice -

It's always a good idea after an infection to change passwords to financial sites from a non-infected machine .

Kaspersky log is not as bad as you think...most of those are in archives, or parts of legit tools. Files can also be used maliciously, so scanners flag them as suspicious.

These can all be deleted.

C:\VundoFix Backups

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\forum fixes\SmitfraudFix.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Desktop\forum fixes\SmitfraudFix.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Desktop\forum fixes\SmitfraudFix

C:\QooBox\ is ComboFix's quarantine folder. You can safely delete it

C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be reseting/clearing the cache in a little while.

Other than that, your logs appear clean. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial
  • FIREWALL
If you do not have a firewall, here are a couple of great free ones available for personal use. Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Grin Re: SmitfraudC.Toolbar888

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I have installed the various spyware software you recommended. Already had AVG Antispyware, Spybot and Adaware.

Have followed all of your instructions and everything seems just fine.

Just one question - with all this extra software installed am I likely to see a drop in performance on the PC. Before this happened it was always very quick. What do you think?

Have just run another scan using spybot and it found the following:
Zedo - tracking cookie
Avenue A - tracking cookie
Advertising.com - tracking cookie
DoubleClick - tracking cookie
I have set spybot to remove them which it appears to have done.
Am guessing this is from when I downloaded those items of software?
All seems fine now though.

Am eternally grateful for all of your help, so appreciate it. You are a star!

Re: SmitfraudC.Toolbar888

As long as you have only one Anti-Virus and one Firewall, your system performance should not be affected by using the other programs....

Cookies are nothing to be worried about. They get installed on your computer everytime you visit any webpage. Now some of those are good cookies that get installed for ease of use for next time you visit the same page, but some cookies are spyware used for tracking users surfing habits.

Most of those cookies are third party cookies that can be blocked:

In Firefox go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies

Click the small triangle next to cookies to expand that tab and put a check next to "for the originating website only". This will prevent third party cookies from being installed on your computer.

In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy and click on Advanced in the Privacy tab

Now put a check next to "Override automatic cookie handling"

Set first party cookies to Accept and third party cookies to Block

Also put a check to "Always allow session cookies" OK your way out.

This won't prevent all bad cookies from being installed, but will reduce the amount.

Also there is another program you can use, which I list above. It does not use system resources.

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

You can read more about cookies at the Cookie Concept

Let me know.....

Re: SmitfraudC.Toolbar888

Cheers for this information. I have installed and activated the Sypware Blaster software. Just really wanted to check on the performance issue - my other half just gets miffed when he has to slow down a perfectly good system so these bad guys can't take hold again.

Thanks again for all your help and advice/information.

Much appreciated.
