An apple from the same tree

Hello again,

The machine this log was taken from was connected to the same network as a computer that was severely infected and which you helped me clean (see http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...tml#post878345 for details.

I disconnected the machine before connecting the previously infected unit to ensure there would be no cross contamination. Please examine the DSS log (extra log attached) and tell me if it is safe to re-connect the network.

Thanks for all you do

John

Re: An apple from the same tree

Hi John....there's some current adware, and evidence of an data stealing trojan which now appears to have been partly removed.

Let's do a full clean on this machine before letting it talk to others on the network.

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • We'll use this later.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 u1.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications". (4th one down)
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.

      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8

    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
    • After the install is complete, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
    • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
    • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
      • Downloaded Applets
      • Downloaded Applications
      • Other Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

    New.net Domains 7.48

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Re: An apple from the same tree

Hi Bob, sorry for the delay in responding but I have a problem. I realize the importance of following the instructions in sequence so the first thing I did was install AVG . . . no problem . . . but when I tried to update the definitions I was presented with; "ERROR - The server is not ready to serve. Please try again later". I have tried in both normal and safe mode with networking. After two days of attempts (including the automatic updates set to 30 minutes), I decided to ask'
; "Is there a workaround"?

Thanks,

John

Re: An apple from the same tree

Hi John -

That happens from time to time with the AVG servers...try again, or use this link to get the full, manual updates.

Download the file, and run it. It will want to install to the same directory as AVG AS.

Re: An apple from the same tree

Hi John -

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50026

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\osmim.dll
c:\windows\system32\osconfig.dll

If they resist, boot to safe mode and delete from there.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's run this additional online scan, to look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post a new HJT log as well.

How's the system behaving?

Re: An apple from the same tree

The system is running very slow. It took almost 8 hrs. to run the Kapersky online scan. It takes about 5-6 minutes to boot. Other than that, there's no extra pop-ups, etc.

Here's the logs you requested.

Thanks for all you do.

John

Re: An apple from the same tree

Hi John -

Kaspersky log says it took less than 4 hours,
Quote:
Duration of the scan process: 03:52:11
not sure why the difference in what it reports. Either seems like a long time for an 80GB drive.

What's F drive? Your USB drive?

There are some stray adware items left behind, but no serious risks that I can see, and nothing obvious to explain a slow system.

You may want to prevent AVG Anti-Spyware from running at Windows startup, and just call it into service when needed. This may help with system boot times. To do so, right click on the AVG A/S system tray icon, and uncheck Start with Windows. Also disable it's real time protection, as this will also use system resources, and will time out at the end of the trial period in 30 days. To do so:

Open AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.

Hope that helps the boot time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delete these:

C:\Deckard\System Scanner\backup
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\clipartfree.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\wfallsawfree.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rk.exe

Delete contents of Norton Quarantine folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, let's use this tool as a diagnostic:
  1. Download combofix.exe to your desktop.
  2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HJT log
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Re: An apple from the same tree

Sorry for the delay. It's been an "interesting" week. Lots of opportunity for ME to excel in my chosen profession.

In response to your question about "Drive F"; Yes, that is my USB Drive.

Should I empty the recycle bin now?

Anyway, here's the logs you requested.

Re: An apple from the same tree

Hi John -

Logs look clean, though it appears AVG Anti-Spyware is still scheduled to run at startup.

Yes, empty recycle bin if it has items in it.

ComboFix didn't find anything which leads me to want to investigate malware further....so if the system is still slow, do a defrag, see if disabling some items from startup can help.

Let me know how you get along.

Re: An apple from the same tree

Hi Bob,

I've followed all your suggestions as well as removed some unnecessary resource hogs such as the HP suite of junk, Google and Yahoo toolbars.

The AVG Anti-Virus probably still showed as a startup item because I had not rebooted before running the last HJT scan.

Afterwards I installed Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware and Win Patrol.

When I ran Ad-Aware it found several things that are a concern. I'm posting the log as an attachment since it is so large.

I'm also including a current HJT scan.

Please advise if there are any further tests we should run.

Best regards,

John

Re: An apple from the same tree

Does Ad-Aware give you the option of fixing those finds? If so, do so.

Cookies are really no big deal, and the other finds seem to be orphaned registry entries or false positives.

Re: An apple from the same tree

To further my comments about false positives....this entry relates to IE7's popup blocker:

CoolWebSearch Object Recognized!
Type : RegValue
Data :
TAC Rating : 10
Category : Malware
Comment :
Rootkey : HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Object : software\microsoft\internet explorer\new windows
Value : PopupMgr

I have the same registry entry on my machine. Turn on IE7 popup blocker, and the value data for PopupMgr is "yes", turn it off, and the value data is "no"

I have a couple of those other entries as well on my machine.

Re: An apple from the same tree

Bob, thanks so much for the detailed explanation. Yes, I fixed the items found in Ad-Aware. Since there seem to be no more concerns, I'll consider this thread closed.

Thanks again for all you do.

John

Re: An apple from the same tree

Well done, John.

Don't forget to flush old system restore points, and create a new one.

I'll give you "the clean log speech", though I think you have it saved by now...

Well done. Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

AVG Anti-Spyware would be a good program to keep, update and run a scan with once a week or so. It adds another layer of protection to your system's security tools.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial
  • FIREWALL
If you do not have a firewall, here are a couple of great free ones available for personal use. Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
