windows crashing please help!

Hi my name is TJ and I am new to this forum. Today I decided to use my dads computer and I found an annoying problem on his computer. I spent almost the whole day trying to fix it. I have knowledge of computers here and there but not enough to fix this problem. The problem starts out with me going to my computers and then opening the CD drive. I put in my music CD and then explored the CD folder, but as soon as i open it, it gives me an error. It pops up the explorer.exe has an ecountered a problem, send do not send report, ect. I checked out the more detailed info and here it is:

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

then went to check the source of the problem and it gave me this:

C:\DOCUME~1\******~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\d662_appcompat.txt

I know that appcompat.txt isnt the problem but it shows what the problem is, and ive tried everything to fix this. I also notice everytime i tried to open the Cd drive again it changes the accompat file name, like first it would be like d662_appcompat.txt then it would change to f13d2_appcompat.txt then by734_appcompat.txt ect. I opened that file and check whats going on but i had no idea what it meant so i here i am asking you guys for help. My dad's computer isnt that old, maybe few months, its a dell, LOL i know, but were cheap and we cant get good computers. I tried everything from virus scans, spyware removal, and ect. I just gave up and finally came here. I tried updating his computer, doing the windows protection tool scan. I know it isnt my CD because i also put in like 5 other cd's and when i tried to go into the CD drive, it crashes and gives me the same thing.

Well heres the text file if you guys can check it out for me, and i really wanted to fix his problem its really annoying, maybe ill try Dells Tech Support tomorrow. I really dont want to reformat his computer because he has a lot of stuff thats really important to him and itll be a pain to back that all up. Hope you guys can help me and thank you!

Re: windows crashing please help!

Hello tjnguyen and welcome,

This log isn't showing enough. Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
  • DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

Please include the following in your next reply:

main.txt
an attached extra.txt

It's 1:36 a.m my time...I'll wait up a bit longer for you to post those logs. The scan will only take between 7 and 10 minutes.

Re: windows crashing please help!

Ok, let's get started.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's important to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK.

Open notepad and copy/paste the entire text in the quotebox below: (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupfolder\C:^Documents and Settings^All Users^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^tqnci.exe]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\bbfscb]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\iiqk]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\mtd2002Svr]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Sen]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\System Service]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\xxmtd]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Zuvcgw]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with HijackThis and save the log.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

C:\ComboFix.txt
Panda results
New HijackThis log

Re: windows crashing please help!

You can bump all you want--it won't change the fact that I volunteer my time and cannot spend 24/7 online at this site.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

***************************************************

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs):

WeatherStudio Toolbar and Desktop

See this link --> http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/content/v_137582.htm

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. 'Check' the following entries: (if they still exist)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6F45AEA2-9C81-4832-8390-7134102B8DE5} - C:\Program Files\WeatherStudio Desktop\bin\WeatherStudio Desktop.dll
O3 - Toolbar: WeatherStudio Toolbar - {15757333-2BCA-4B77-A807-D0955132F812} - C:\Program Files\WeatherStudio348\bin\WeatherStudio348.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WeatherStudio Desktop] "C:\Program Files\WeatherStudio Desktop\bin\WeatherStudio Desktop.exe"

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please ensure Hidden files and folders are viewable:

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click OK.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Using 'My Computer', navigate to and delete the following (if they still exist.)

C:\Program Files\WeatherStudio348
C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\SetupDTSB.exe
C:\Program Files\dslifestyle
C:\WINDOWS\VGh1YW4gTmd1eWVu

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK.

Open notepad and copy/paste the entire text in the quotebox below: (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\dropspam lifestyle]
Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
**AVG Anti-Spyware is compatible with most AV and anti-spyware products, and the free version will continue to be useful as a second anti-malware scanner.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot into Normal Mode.

AVG Anti-Spyware results
Panda results
New HijackThis log

I need you to tell me how the system is behaving.

Re: windows crashing please help!

oh btw, before idk what happened but i didnt get the error but i didnt try it in safemode, but when i booted it back normally, i went to my computers then CD drive E: and with the files in it, i get the same error and it crashes window, taskbar disappears then loads windows again. it didnt happen after i scanned and delete everything but when i rebooted it again it happened again.

edit: it does the same thing for both Drives too, oh and another thing i just found it. I put a CD with 1 file in that CD. I open the Cd drive, but if i just leave it there, it wont crash, but as soon as i highlight the file, it crashes giving the explore.exe error.

Re: windows crashing please help!

Many infections affect the OS. It could be that even though infections have been identified and cleaned, the damage has already been done and you'll continue to have issues. Or...it could be that there is additional malware onboard that has not been uncovered yet.

Go here and do the BitDefender online virus scan.
  • Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Leave the scanning options at default and press "Click here to scan" to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished.
  • When the scan is finished, click on "Click here to export the scan results"
  • Save the report to your desktop then come back here and post it in your next reply along with a new Hijack This log

Re: windows crashing please help!

HI TJ,

I'm not seeing anything traces of malware. Try invoking Windows File Protection.

Click Start>Run and type in sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /) and let it scan for missing/corrupt files. This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. If it finds any problems, it will prompt you for the Windows XP Install disc so have it handy.

---------------------------------------------------------

If your issue still remains, I would suggest a Repair Install. Here's a good step by step guide for performing a Repair Install of Windows XP.

Windows XP Home Repair for all service pack versions of XP*

Re: windows crashing please help!

i was hoping that i wouldnt have to reinstall windows because my dad has a lot of stuff to backup, so if this doesnt work, only resort is to reinstall? is there any way else? like he uses a dell, maybe system restore? because reinstalling windows will make me have to reinstall EVERYTHING over, like sound drivers, and all those drivers right, because i remember i had to reinstall windows and it took me like 3 hours just to get everything to back when it was before. do u think using the windows system restore, restoring to like 2 weeks earlier will work? and also the scanner found 2 identified files and 3 infected files and only 3 were delted, maybe i should delete those?

Re: windows crashing please help!

i just did the scan, theres no error =( idk what happened.

edit: ok heres an update, i just tried other discs, like my music disc, it doesnt crash, i tried other install files and ones with folders in it, doesnt crash, so i burnt a copy with a video from my cam corder, only 1 file on that disc, i burnt it as a data disc, crashes when highlighted, seems to crash on video files, the video file was a 670 MB avi file that i transfered from my camcorder to computer then burnt it onto a disc but then i split it into 3 parts, and burnt it again as a WMV file, it didnt crash.

Re: windows crashing please help!

Hi,

BitDefender took care of everything it found. What the summary is stating is that there were 2 different viruses found. Those were found residing in only 3 files. It deleted those 3 files. Now, since those files were located in your System Restore, it's possible that System Restore will not be able to go back to about 2 wks ago.

Please do not confuse a Repair Install with a complete Reinstall of the OS. Take a look at the link I provided.

Now that you've narrowed it down to just video files, I don't think a repair is necessary. Let's have a look at Windows Event Viewer. It might give us a clue as to what is causing these issues

Go to Start > Run - type in eventvwr <Press Enter>

This is a picture of what the event viewer looks like.
You will see Application, Security & System listed in the left pane.
  1. In the left pane click on Application.
  2. Click the gray title Type at the top of the source name column in the right pane to sort by type name
Look for Error & double-click on the most recent 5, and evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem.
  3. Make note of the Description, EventID and Source of these Event Properties.
  4. From the right pane, doubleclick on the line where it says error & you should get a window like the example below

  5. In the upper right corner of this picture, you should see 2 arrows. One is pointing up & the other, pointing down.
There is another button below the 2 arrows. Click once on it. (this will copy some information to clipboard)
  6. Open notepad & paste the info in there. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each event here

Repeat steps 1-6 for System

Re: windows crashing please help!

ah ha! i think i found out the problem, since it dealt with AVI files, it meant it had to be the codec, i think i fixed the problem, i was using a Combined Community Codec Pack, and i guess it got corrupted, so w/e files that uses the codec, it would crash, ive removed the codec and it seems like i dont have any more problems, ive tested the cd's again and im not crashing, i highlighted that AVI file in the folder and its not crashing. Well looks like my problems solved, but to be sure u can still check my event viewer, any ways Thanks for spending your time with a customer like me! Thank you Ried!
