Re: speed

Hi Ried.
Well, mediacom say they got everything fixed up on their end. However, it didn't make much difference in the speed of this computer. So back to your help. By the way, i just wanted to saythat even if this don't get fixed by you guys, I've learned a lot from you.

Re: speed

An idea to keep in the back of your mind--it may be easiest for you to just try a Repair Install and see if that improves the system. Here's a good step by step guide for performing a Repair Install of Windows XP to give you an idea of what is involved. Windows XP Home Repair for all service pack versions of XP*

We can also have a look at Windows Event Viewer. It might give us a clue as to what is causing these issues.

Go to Start > Run - type in eventvwr <Press Enter>

This is a picture of what the event viewer looks like.
You will see Application, Security & System listed in the left pane.
  1. In the left pane click on Application.
  2. Click the gray title “Type” at the top of the source name column in the right pane to sort by type name
Look for “Error” & double-click on the most recent 5, and evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem.
  3. Make note of the Description, EventID and Source of these Event Properties.
  4. From the right pane, doubleclick on the line where it says error & you should get a window like the example below

  5. In the upper right corner of this picture, you should see 2 arrows. One is pointing up & the other, pointing down.
There is another button below the 2 arrows. Click once on it. (this will copy some information to clipboard)
  6. Open notepad & paste the info in there. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each event here

Repeat steps 1-6 for System

Re: speed

Ried,
I was going to try the first suggestion you made, however, It stopped me right off when it asked for a windows XP Home CD. If you will go back to previous posts, you will be reminded that when I got this computer, it had an illegal XP on it. I made the guy get the CD's for a legal XP which he got from HP. There are seven of them & it says on the front of the jacket; HP 524w System Recovery Disks Win XP Home Edition Original Bundled Software. I know from past experience with my Dell that I should have gotten just one disk to work with repair or reinstall so I don't know which disk of the seven I should use. The flyer that came with them says they are system recovery disks & they can either do a standard recovery or a full system recovery so I'm afraid to touch them as I don't know which one to put in the player.

I hit the send button too fast. Anyway, I stopped there as I figured I'd wait till I heard from you as to what to do.

Re: speed

You're right, I did forget about that. None of those 7 discs will work for a Repair Install, you need an Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 Install disc to do that.

Please proceed with the Event Viewer instructions, perhaps we can glean something useful from that.

Re: speed

Oh man Ried,
I do have a Cd that says "Windows XP Service Pack 2 with Advanced Security Technologies" I got this seperately from Microsoft about a year ago. I didn't notice that is what was needed till you spelled it out. Notice, it does not say 'Home Edition" on it.

Re: speed

Sorry Ed, that wont' work either as it only contains the SP2 update. You would need the actual XP install disc.

Please take a look at the Event Viewer and post that info here for me.

Re: speed

Hi Ed,

As you've no doubt noticed, most of your errors have to do with your Lexmark Printer. At this point, I would suggest returning to your thread here --> Speed and let the Windows experts try to help you resolve your remaining issues. Post the Event Viewer logs for them to take a look at and let them know you've been cleared from the HijackThis help area. It may be a good idea to provide them with a link to this thread so they can see what areas we've explored to try to resolve your issues.
