Dnserror

I've looked at another post on the forums and said to post here about the dnserror. I'm currently on another computer posting this and trying to figure out what to do. I can connect to the internet through online games and instant messaging. I can't use IE or Mozilla because it comes up with no page. I don't know exactly what to do if suggestions on what I can do to fix the problem so I can use IE/Mozilla it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Dnserror

Hello Coffeeguy and welcome to TSF,

We need a bit more information from you to see what is causing the trouble.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
  • DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

Please include the following in your next reply:

main.txt
an attached extra.txt

Re: Dnserror

Hiya,

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

Please download the following tools to any removable media and transfer to this infected system:

Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Deckard's System Scanner ran a cloned version of HijackThis since you were unable to connect to the internet to allow the download of the HijackThis.exe. We need a working copy on this system:

HijackThis 1.99.1.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Before we begin, please move dss.exe to your desktop. While we’re cleaning your system, various tools used will clean the temp folder which, with dss.exe in it's current location, we'll lose the program.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Open notepad and copy/paste the entire text in the quotebox below: (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run]
"Windows Security"=-
Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply: (please copy/paste directly into the reply box)

C:\ComboFix.txt
HijackThis log

Re: Dnserror

Well I had a problem with delete.reg I understand where to go but do i create the delete.reg off of windows security? I couldn't find the save either for it if I had to do that. Also where is the combofix.exe located? Just those questions. I have the log file right now...

Re: Dnserror

Please read my previous reply once again. All instructions are given step by step what to do, beginning with the download of ComboFix and where to place it.

For the regfix, all you have to do is open Notepad and copy/paste the text specified in my previous reply and follow the rest of the instructions to complete the regfix.

Re: Dnserror

Hi,

Once again, print or copy these instructions to Notepad for reference.

***************************************************

Download LSPFix.exe

------------------------------------------------------------------

Download the attached coffeeguy.zip file to your desktop.

Double click on the coffeguy.zip folder, then double click on the .reg file within. Click yes to allow it to merge into your registry.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Instructions for using LSPFix
  1. Double click on LSPFix.exe to run it.
  2. Once running, you will be required to tick the disclaimer - "I know what I'm doing".
  3. You'll find a window with 2 panes.
  4. In the left pane which is labeled Keep, select all instances of newdotnet or new.net (if they exist)
  5. Then click on the arrow pointing to the right, >>.
  6. This will move the entry to the right pane labeled Remove
  7. Whether those entries were found or not, click the Finish button to complete the fix.
If you are unsure about removing certain files, please come back and post the filenames here and I will advise you how to proceed.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot your system.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run ComboFix.exe once and post the ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with an update on your system's behavior. Can you access the internet yet?

Re: Dnserror

I just wanted to double check with you on the things I will move to the right side. rsvpsp.dll (Protocol handler) , winrnr.dll - NTDS , mswsock.dll - Tcpip. To give you an update real fast I can now open up the internet on my computer and not use another. It's running a little slower though then it was but I just wanted to double check if those are ok to put in Remove.

Re: Dnserror

NO--don't move any of those over to the Remove section. Please...you need to read my instructions carefully.

Since you have internet connection now, Please run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with dss.exe

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

Panda results
New main.txt

Re: Dnserror

We'll use another tool and see if anything further is revealed.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

***************************************************

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Dnserror

Hi,

Your logs are clean. Please continue with these final instructions and helpful links:

Reset hidden/system files and folders
Windows XP
===============
Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
* Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
* Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Ensure Windows Auto Update is Enabled
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from previous restore points.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

McAfee Site Advisor--free version. The folks there check out websites and based on their findings, rate it as Safe, Unknown, Caution, or Bad.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.

Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
  • Now navigate to C:\ie-spyad. Double click to open it.
  • From within the folder, double-click install.bat
  • Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
  • Then return to the main menu.
  • Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER
Understanding and Using Firewalls

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

-----------------------------------------------------

Follow the list above and the potential for infection will reduce dramatically.
