home page sets to google..need help interpreting HJT Log
My home page recently began to reset itself to googles homepage and I sometimes encounter redirects when following links in google searches. I ran an Ad-aware scan and turned up a few things, but I had a clean scan with AVG antivirus.
I'm new to Hijack this and would appreciate any help interpreting the following log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 9:39:59 PM, on 4/3/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\oasclnt.exe C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~3\MMDiag.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MskAgent.exe C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Photo Album 6\MediaDetect.exe C:\Program Files\Winamp\Winampa.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\mcvsshld.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfTray.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsescn.exe C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\Musicmatch Jukebox\mim.exe C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\aoltray.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsftsn.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcdetect.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mctskshd.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfService.exe C:\WINDOWS\ehome\RMSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehmsas.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfAgent.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe C:\DOCUME~1\PATRIC~1.PAT\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.063\HijackThis.exe R1 - Re: home page sets to google..need help interpreting HJT Log
Step 1
The entries below indicate that you may have two antivirus programs on your computer. C:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsftsn.exe mcvsftsn.exe is a process belonging to McAfee VirusScan which protects your computer against Internet-bound threats such as spyware and trojans which can be distributed through e-mail or attack directly to the computer allowing unauthorized access to your computer C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfAgent.exe mpfagent.exe is a process belonging to McAfee Internet Security suite. When you have more than one antivirus running at the same time, they conflict with each other rendering the computer vulnerable or unusable. It may even cause crashes. Please review this information: Should you run more than one antivirus program at the same time? Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer. There are basically two types of antivirus programs: On-Access and On-Demand On-Access Scanners, as the name implies, run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine. On-Demand Scanners, such as Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine, as the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to run. Antivirus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two antivirus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple antivirus programs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. Running two antivirus programs at the same time could lead to both of them trying to scan the same file at the same time, scan the same email at the same time and so on which could lead to conflicts. I strongly suggest you do one of the following:
Step 2 I noticed that you have some programs that need to be updated. Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove the older versions of Java Runtime Environment..
Your "Adobe Reader" is out of date. You may want to download the latest version, Adobe® Reader® 8.

Re: home page sets to google..need help interpreting HJT Log
SDFix will get rid of some of the trojans on your computer but since the entry below is an indication of the Trojan.Looksky, I feel I should give you warning.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysvx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysvx.exe Symantec reports: Quote:
Symantec's Information on Trojan.Looksky and Prevx1's Information on Trojan.Looksky. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files. My advice to you would be for you to disconnect this computer from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the computer or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the operating system. Please read these for more information: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall Reformatting Windows XP by wng_z3r0 Windows XP Clean install However, if you do not have the resources to reformat your computer and reinstall your operating system and programs and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so. Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Re: home page sets to google..need help interpreting HJT Log
It looks like when you chose to uninstall McAfee, you also uninstalled your firewall.
A Firewall is an essential part of computer security and you do not appear to have one running on your system. There are several firewalls that provide better protection than the Windows SP2 firewall. Follow these steps to turn off/disable the Windows Firewall before installing a new firewall:.
There are a few firewalls available for free that appear to be good and easy to use:

Re: home page sets to google..need help interpreting HJT Log
You may want to print this page. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
Step 1 Please download Spybot-S&D. Please check this link, Using Spybot- Search and Destroy To Remove Spyware From Your Computer, for instructions on how to download, install and use Spybot-S&D. Run this program as soon as possible. Step 2 Please print out the following instructions as this page will be unavailable to you while you are working in Safe Mode. Please download and install AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido).
The ATF-Cleaner program is for XP and Windows 2000 only.[/b] ATF-Cleaner features include:
Instructions:
If needed, Tutorial on ATF Cleaner with pictures. Do not run it yet. Step 4 Please disconnect from the Internet. Please close ALL browser windows (including this one). Now we will address the HijackThis fixes. Please run HijackThis and click Scan Place checks next to the following entries (make sure not to miss any): O2 - BHO: CDLPObj Object - {BE2ED590-CA49-46B5-8CCE-244FB2E0D1AA} – C:\WINDOWS\DLP.dll These are optional fixes. These programs are not required to start automatically as you can start them manually if you need them. It is advised that you disable these programs so that they do not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported these processes slow their boot time. Please run HijackThis and click Scan. Place checks next to the following entries. Dell's MyWay process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. Although not technically malware, it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. There are safer alternatives available such as the Google toolbar. If you do not use this, I recommend that you remove it. Please follow the Removal instructions. A process belonging to the Cyberlink PowerCinema video viewing software which allows you to play DVDs upon insertion. Non-essential process - and is installed for ease of use. Whether or not you need to run this program on startup must be decided by you. If you feel that you want this program starting automatically so that you have it available as needed, then do not disable it. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe" realplay.exe (RealPlayer) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. realplay.exe is the main process belonging to Real Networks, Real Player which allows the playing of various video files such as MPEG and AVI. This process also installs a system tray icon onto your system tray bar. This program is a non-essential system process, and is installed for ease of use. The program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. If you start RealPlayer manually, it adds itself back to the start-up list. You can stop this from happening by right-clicking on the tray icon and disabling StartCenter via PreferencesThis. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER ISUSPM Startup ISUSPM.exe ( InstallShield Update Service Scheduler) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. It automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software so you’re always working with the most current version. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup issch.exe ISUSScheduler ( InstallShield Update Service Scheduler) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start You have mimboot.exe running at Startup. Mimboot.exe is a non-essential process associated with eMusicmatch Jukebox. The process makes sure that Musicmatch is launched when starting up the system. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~1\mimboot.exe winampa.exe is the background task from Winamp which has two purposes : it provides the Winamp System Tray icon, and it maintains file associations so that other applications do not take over file associations which Winamp normally handles. As a System Tray icon, Winamp is rarely used; most users use Winamp through double-clicking on an MP3 file rather than through actually starting it through Start \ Programs. For most users there is no need for a Tray icon which just adds to the clutter. More worryingly, in our experience, WINAMPA seems to cause unexplained crashes in Netscape and Internet Explorer, and a few other programs. Disabling WINAMPA totally appears to get rid of the crashes. I recommend that you disable Winamp Agent.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] D:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe nerocheck.exe is a process associated with the Nero CD writing or Nero CD/DVD software. It is used to install or control the Nero driver nerocd2k.sys application. This process should not be removed while using the Nero CD Writing software. This program constantly checks for known drivers that can conflict with our Nero/Nero Express/NeroVision Express software. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe HPWuSchd2.exe and HPWuSchd.exe (HP software updates) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. This is the HP software updates. If a shortcut doesn't exist, create your own and run it manually This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe" hpcmpmgr.exe (HP Component Manager) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. Checks the Internet for updated drivers/utilities for your HP product - update manually. Disabling will remove the error "Windows can't shutdown the computer because hpcmpmgr.exe can't be ended". This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe" You have QuickTime running at Startup. This is QuickTime's system tray icon and not necessary for the program to function properly. It is considered to be a resource hog. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in QuickTime Player itself to keep it from resetting itself. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 ‑ HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" ‑atboottime There is a small program that will prevent QuickTime from resetting itself. Please download Engraph-QuickTime-Killer This is a free utility from EnGraph software. For more information about EnGraph, go to www.engraph.com. This application is intended for people that use or consume Sprint Video Mail, as Sprint uses QuickTime for viewing thier movies. (or anybody that hates QuickTime) Of course, as soon as QuickTime is ran, it adds itself to startup, which is very annoying to me. This application will remove QuickTime from start up and kill any running QuickTime processes. This application runs silently at start up and closes itself as soon as it takes care of QuickTime. You have iTunesHelper.exe running at Startup. iTunesHelper.exe is a process belonging to Itunes MP3 streaming tool by Apple which allows you to play MP3's. This process speeds up iTunes when it starts, and the program also monitors for connected iPod devices. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe You have jusched.exe running at Startup. It checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. This program is not required to start automatically. You can do this manually by visiting http://java.sun.com or just run the Java Plug-In Control Panel. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre-1_6_0\bin\jusched.exe msmsgs.exe (MSN Messenger Internet chat tool) is the main process relating to the MSN Messenger Internet chat tool installed by default on most Windows computers. Dell Support Agent offers additional support and update features for your Dell computer or laptop. Whether or not you need to run this program on startup must be decided by you. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
