Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

As the thread title says. Pop-ups are killing me and this is the first time i cant stop them. While browsing various sits pop up. When searching clicking on links redirects me to monstershop or some other shopping search site.

I also sometimes get sound advertisements without any IE windows being open and have to close the IE application thru Task Manager.

this is the DSS main log and attached is the extra log

Re: Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

Hi and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your log is clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

Show Hidden Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Re: Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

i got most of the logs, i did have some issues with avg you might be talking about a version different to the one that i have. none of the options you described were there and i couldnt get q log at the end of the scan. so i dont know if you can give me a link to the version you were speaking about or we can move on without it. let me know.

also at this point things seem to have gotten significantly worse. the computer sometimes wont boot the OS. it gets to the XP loading screen. and bluescreen before it gets to the user log on page. other times it gets to the log on on page the warning that a system error has occured and while shut down in 60 seconds comses up. and there are times where it boots up fine i log into my user and iyt bluescreens while running programs ...

since i have access to my computer and a network to othr PCs in the house. i was wondering if u think a full format and reinstall of XP is a viable option. any critical files i need such as work/school files speardsheets etc. can be transfered to another PC and stored there while i do the formatting on the laptop.

the only issue i might have with the formatting is that it is a sony vaio laptop. i dont think it came with a recovery disk and if it did, i no longer have it. so i dont know if a ersion of XP i have will install on a laptop that might be locked into the XP serial that it orignally came with.

Let me know what you think should be done between continuing with the cleaning (needing the AVG version number or not) or going forward with a formatting (if the XP conflict is not an issue).

Hi

Let's stop the shutdowns first. Go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following

shutdown -a

and click OK.

The key thing to do is run combofix as instructed - everything else can wait. If you can manage that, it should help enough to get your system back to some sort of stability. We can then take it from there.

I would have thought that the laptop would have had a restore partition available - check your documentation.

Re: Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

the daft and combofix scans were run just fine. but they were run before i ran the AVG and i think the AVG might have erased a few files so they might be reported in the daft and combofix scan results. if u want i can post them or re run those programs and post the new logs.

as for the parition. it did come paritioned with a 60 and 20 gig drive. my brother was using it for a while and has all his programs installed on the C (20 gig) partition. there is nothing in the way of programs in the D drive. all is just movies and pictures from the camera i have

anything in particular i should look for as a restorer?

Hi

I think the restore partition is usually hidden and can only be accessed by hitting an F key on boot, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I don't think we'll need to go down that route though. Can you post whatever logs you have and we'll see how we are progressing?

Hi again.

Let’s see if the rest of the cleaning is now a bit easier for you.

I wonder if that's a newer version?

Try uninstalling your version then go here and download this version

AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

If that doesn't change anything just ignore AVG and carry on with the rest of the fix.

Re: Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

Alright. ran everything.. combofix has an issue running. said it could not find file regdt or something of the sort but it ran and compiled a log.

i attached the logs. as far as system performance, the popups and redirecting seem to be gone. While running combofix, during the reboot, my computer still has issues white booting up. it continues to bluescreen right before the user log on screen. I dont know if this is a issue with a virus or malware, or a seperate issue involving some other type of conflict. Windows reported the error report and linked me to a site. it says it is a possible this is an issue with a driver i have installed, but i have not installed any new drivers on this computer in over a year.

the bluescreen has this information on it

Re: Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

alright .. new logs attached.

combofix tried to fix the ndis.sys file .. which is in the drivers folder somewhere under C\Windows i dont think it was able to replace it.. and when it went to reboot the PC it still took 4 or 5 tries to get it to not bluescreen on the user logon page.

i went to the device manager to see any IRQ conflicts and found one between the 56k modem and Audio device. i thought i might disable the 56k modem since i dont use it but the problem with the blue screen continued

Re: Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

Hi again

Let’s sort out these drivers – this is the source of the BSOD.

Click Start > Run and copy and paste this line into the box

sc stop new_drv (!!!!)

and click OK

Then repeat for this line

sc delete new_drv (!!!!)

and click OK

Now delete this file – if it still exists

c:\windows\new_drv.sys

Reboot
Reboot your system in Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (dependent on your system this may be F5 or another key)
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Go to Start > Search and look for this file – copies should be located in a folder called i386 or an SP2 upgrade folder (a copy will also be on the XP CD - just in case).

ndis.sys

Copy the new file to this location

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\

and say ‘Yes’ if prompted to overwrite.

Then reboot to Normal Mode.

Double click on dss.exe and follow the prompts – it will only produce one log – main.txt. Post that log back here and let me know if things are working better now.

Re: Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

one more thing. maybe you have heard of this..

my outlook express takes an extreamly long time to open up. i searched this before and the concensus (sp) was it was a issue with google toolbar, i uninstalled it and it still takes a while. sometimes it will open up instantly other it looks like it opens up AIM (even though its already running, it brings AIM to the foreground) and laggs in opening up.

Re: Constant Popups and redirecting... source unknown

Hi again

Good – we’re nearly there. Please delete your current version of combofix – the tool has been updated in the last few days. We'll download the latest version later in this fix.

We need to use LSPFix again to remove the bad file from your LSP chain.

Can you look in this folder

C:\spoolerlogs

and tell me what’s inside?

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Disable Windows Defender
Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Registry Fix
Click on the zip file attached to this post to open and extract the file helix2.reg to your desktop. Double click on the file helix2.reg to run it. Answer yes to any prompts and allow it to merge into the Registry.

Instructions for using LSPFix
  • Double click on LSPFix.exe to run it.
  • Once running, you will be required to tick the disclaimer - "I know what I'm doing".
  • You'll find a window with 2 panes.
  • In the left pane which is labeled Keep, select all instances of this file
    • pgfknkardrlik.dll
  • Then click on the arrow pointing to the right, >>
  • This will move the entry to the right pane labeled Remove
  • Click the Finish button to complete the fix.

If you are unsure about removing certain files, please come back and post the filenames here and I will advise you how to proceed.

File Deletions
Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\plasting__
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regscan.exe

Reboot
Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Combofix
Please download combofix.exe to your desktop.
Alternate link.

IMPORTANT - You must place combofix on your desktop!!

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, the tool will produce a log for you at c:\combofix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Post back with c:\combofix.txt and a fresh HijackThis Log
