Trojan.Vundo, Adware and Tracking Cookies
Hi, I had such great success cleaning up my work computer thanks to the help here, I hope I can prevail upon you for helping me clean up my home computer, as well. I did an AVG Spyware scan and got the following log:

The trojan thing is worrisome, yes?

BTW I just downloaded AVG AntiSpyware tonight, so I still have 30 days trial. Also, I just got the new Java tonight and removed all the old versions containing JRE or J2SE.

Hi again,

Not much seem to be going on in your home computer, but let's check it up. Before we begin, you'll need to place HijackThis in a folder of its own for it to function properly. Please right click on an empty space on your desktop and choose New>Folder. Name the folder HijackThis and move HijackThis.exe on your desktop into that new folder.

Please disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
  • Close Windows Defender

Open AVG Anti Spyware.
Under 'Status',click on "change status" to make it 'inactive'. Once your log is clean you can re-enable it.

Scan with HijackThis and have the following fixed with HijackThis. Make sure that you have no open browsers when you click on "fix checked":

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Post the ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi, again, don't you ever get to go home?

Okay, I got as far as "Double click on combofix.txt & follow the prompts." When I do that, (no open browsers) I first get a warning window, where I click on the "Run" button, which brings up an empty DOS type window for about 2 seconds, then it disappears. The window contains no text, and no log is produced.

Actually the log is looking very good. So, since you already have AVG Anti-Spyware on board, let's use that now and see where we go from there. Please update it to its latest definitions before scanning and post the results. In case you don't have the settings for it at home, here they are again:
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Let's clean the cookies and the temp files before scanning to cut down on the scan time.

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it. Do not scan with it yet.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode using the F8 method below.
a. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
b. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
c. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
d. Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
e. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

From Safe Mode run Ccleaner
  • Click on Options,
  • Select Advanced
  • Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected.
  • Do not use the "Issues" block . It's meant for professionals.
  • Choose the Windows tab.
  • Check everything EXCEPT Advanced part of the Menu.
  • Click on "Analyze". This process could take a while.
  • If you don't want to loose your login passwords to certain sites, click on Options
  • Select cookies and move the ones you want to keep to the "cookies to keep" section, by highlighting and using the arrows in the middle.
  • Choose Run Cleaner.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
If you have more than one users, run Ccleaner for every user

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

Reboot in Normal Mode.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post along with the AVG Anti-spyware log and a fresh HijackThis log please.

Okay its been a discouraging evening. Pretty sure I was following the instructions to the letter. AVG did not produce a report (or offer one) so I ran it again, still no report. The first time it noted 12 (I think) problems, all cookies, plus Vundo. The second time, it reported no problems.

I tried to run Kapersky, and it asked me to install the activeX, then went back to a warning window (about having admin rights, i think) but would not proceed to downloading the definition files. I'm beat, but open to suggestions!

The default file name for the AVG AS report will be in date/time format, something like: Report-Scan-20070328-193616.txt. A copy of each report is saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports folder.

I am having trouble scanning with Kaspersky too. There must be something wrong with the website. We'll try another scanner.

Please download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop.


Disconnect this PC from the internet and close all open programs.

It's crucial that you follow this next step exactly as instructed: Do not multi-task while the scan is running...make sure that only DrWeb is active
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

    This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Please remove/delete all the tools I asked you to download, except AVG Anti Spyware and Ccleaner.

Since AVG Anti Spyware is a trial version, the realtime guard and automatic update will stop functioning after the trial period. That is why we are not installing the guard so it will not interfere with the cleanup or the malware removal process. You can use AVG-AS as an on-demand scanner (recommended) but you will have to manually update the definition file each time you scan.

Ccleaner is also a useful tool to keep for cleaning your cookies and temp files on a regular basis.

Re-enable all the realtime scanners I may have asked you to disable.

Remember to hide your system files again, if I had asked you to unhide them.

Create a new System Restore point to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Go to Start>Run and type sysdm.cpl. Press Enter
  • Select the System Restore Tab
  • Place a check in "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • Click Apply
  • next, uncheck the same checkbox.
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
