Re: Btcar redirection

Hello and welcome to TSF.

You have multiple infections. Please stay away from internet until it's cleaned. It may take several post to do that. You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

=======================================

Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix.

To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
  • Close Windows Defender
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

======================================

Please download the following tools and save them to your desktop:

1. SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

2. FixWareout by LonnyRJones from one of these
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe

======================================

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:
· "Security Info"
· "Warning Message"
· "Security Desktop"
· "Warning Homepage"
· "Desktop Uninstall"

Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

==============================
  • Next, double click on Fixwareout.
  • Click Next,
  • then Install,
  • make sure Run fixit is checked
  • and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
When you run fixwareout , simply follow the prompts, you will need to restart when prompted.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

===============================

CAUTION!: It is possible that your Internet Service Provider requires specific settings here. Make sure you know if you need specific DNS settings here or not before you proceed to make the following changes or you may lose your internet connection. If you are sure you do not need a specific DNS address here, you may proceed.

Once back in Windows, close all web browsers.
  • Go into Control Panel>Network Connections.
  • Right click on your connection
  • and click Properties.
  • On the Properties page, highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
  • Click Properties. This will bring up another page.
  • Select Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
  • Click the ok button. The page will close.
  • Press ok on the page in front of you.
  • Go to Start > Run and type in cmd
  • Click OK.
  • This will open a command prompt.
  • Type or copy and paste the following line in the command window:
  • ipconfig /flushdns
  • Hit Enter
  • Exit the command window
  • Restart the computer.
  • Start the Internet and IE.
  • Open this file c:\fixwareout\report.txt and post the contents of it and a new HijackThis log please.
=================================

Please Download NoLop to your desktop from one of the links below...
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it
  • Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
    <<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish.
--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program.--

=================================

Finally, please post back the following. You may have to post them separately if too long:

C:\rapport.txt
C:\fixwareout\report.txt
C:\NoLop.log
a new HijackThis log into this topic.

Re: Btcar redirection

Hi,

You're welcome. I don't know how it's at your end, but it's looking much better here already. I noticed that you're using Shareaza, a p2p file sharing program. I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware, which may be the source of one or two of your current problems.

You also have Messenger Plus installed. One of the infections you have usually comes bundled with the sponsor software that is installed along with the MessengerPlus.

Please remove/uninstall MessengerPlus! using Add/Remove Programs.

Click Start " Control Panel " Add/Remove Programs.
Scroll down and find Messenger Plus! 3, then click the Remove button.

A picture will appear, check both boxes then click Uninstall.
Type the numbers you see, then click UNINSTALL.
Then click Yes.

If you like the program and want to use it. You'll have to reinstall it later but taking care to NOT to install the sponsor software.

You'll have to disable it again. It's best to keep it that way until all finished.

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6.0 windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

=================================

Restart your computer.

=================================

Post back a fresh HijackThis log please and let me know how things are now.

Smile Re: Btcar redirection

Hi Amateur,

The results are evident! My computer is running ten times faster. I also tweaked my msconfig a little to speed up the start up speed and stop some useless programs from loading up.

I don't understand how my computer still has traces of shareaza in it, because i removed the program a few months ago in the add and remove utility! hmm... but i still use ARES p2p client and i have noted your point on the vulnerabilities they pose on the computers security.

I have also removed MSN plus as advised and will not install the sponsor in future.

I have removed the old java programs and installed the new one you recommended.

On the whole, the computer feels clean as a whistle...the btcar redirection has stopped. The processes are faster and more "smooth"

Amatuer, you have really helped me significantly! Thank you soo much!

Re: Btcar redirection

Hi,

I am glad to hear that your computer is running much better. We still have some more work to do though. I don't know if you forgot to fix the following entry or it came back. You might like to print out these instructions so that you'll have access to them later when you're in Safe Mode.

Make sure that Windows Defender is turned off.

Have the following entry fixed with HijackThis like you did before:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [KindWma] C:\DOCUME~1\Gere\APPLIC~1\FRAGSU~1\Fordtick.exe

===================================

Using Windows Explorer (right click on Start, click on Explore) locate and delete the following folders if exist:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.windows\Application Data\Settings This Save Ball
C:\Documents and Settings\Gere\Application Data\Fragsupportbook
C:\Documents and Settings\Gere\Application Data\Shareaza

===================================

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it. Do not scan with it yet.

===================================

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

=====================================

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode using the F8 method below.
a. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
b. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
c. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
d. Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
e. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

===================================

From Safe Mode run Ccleaner
  • Click on Options,
  • Select Advanced
  • Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected.
  • Do not use the "Issues" block . It's meant for professionals.
  • Choose the Windows tab.
  • Check everything EXCEPT Advanced part of the Menu.
  • Click on "Analyze". This process could take a while.
  • If you don't want to loose your login passwords to certain sites, click on Options
  • Select cookies and move the ones you want to keep to the "cookies to keep" section, by highlighting and using the arrows in the middle.
  • Choose Run Cleaner.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
If you have more than one users, run Ccleaner for every user
===================================

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

====================================

Reboot your computer in Normal mode

====================================

Open HijackThis and go into the Config option when you start HijackThis, and then click on the Misc Tools button at the top. You will then click on the button labeled "Generate StartupList Log". Once you click that button, the program will automatically open up a notepad filled with the Startup items from your computer. Copy and paste the list here please.

===================================

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  • Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  • A "pop up" window will appear. Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  • Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click and post back the contents please.
[size=1]* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.

=====================================

Please post back the following. You may have to post them separately if too long.

a fresh HijackThis log taken after the reboot.
Startup list
AVG Anti-Spyware log
Panda Online scan results

Re: Btcar redirection

Hi,

You've done very well.... just a little more and you'll get yourself a clean system. Let's remove those remnants. Please delete SmitfraudFix, NoLop, and Fixwareout from your desktop if you haven't already.
Were you able to delete these folders? :

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.windows\Application Data\Settings This Save Ball
C:\Documents and Settings\Gere\Application Data\Fragsupportbook
C:\Documents and Settings\Gere\Application Data\Shareaza

You needed to have the system files visible and I don't remember if I told you to do that. If not, please go to My Computer> Tools> Folder Options> View> and uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Click Apply>OK. Then, try deleting them. Let me know if you have any problems.

================================

Open notepad. It must be notepad, not wordpad.
Copy and paste the text inside the quote box below into notepad. Make sure that wordwrap is turned off in notepad - click the format menu and uncheck wordwrap.
Choose file save as and set file type to all files.
Type fixreg.reg in the file name and save it to your desktop.

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{9AFB8248-617F-460d-9366-D71CDEDA3179}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB}
Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end.

Close notepad. Make sure that all windows are closed.

Find the fixreg.reg file on your desktop.
Double click it.
It will then ask if you want the file merged to your registry.
Answer yes.

====================================

Using Windows Explorer (right click on Start, click on Explore), locate and delete the following folders:

C:\fixwareout
C:\Documents and Settings\Gere\Desktop\Burn List\SmitfraudFix

====================================

Reboot your computer. Empty your Recycle Bin.

====================================

And that's all. Since AVG Anti Spyware is a trial version, the realtime guard and automatic update will stop functioning after the trial period. That is why we are not installing the guard so it will not interfere with the cleanup or the malware removal process. You can use AVG-AS as an on-demand scanner (recommended) but you will have to manually update the definition file each time you scan.

Ccleaner is also a useful tool to keep for cleaning your cookies and temp files on a regular basis.

You can re-enable Windows Defender now.

Remember to hide your system files again.

Create a new System Restore point to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Go to Start>Run and type sysdm.cpl. Press Enter
  • Select the System Restore Tab
  • Place a check in "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • Click Apply
  • next, uncheck the same checkbox.
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
You can also find instructions on how to disable and re enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide

Please read this page with lots of info and tips on how to prevent malware in the future.

Happy surfing!

Thumbs Up Re: Btcar redirection

Hi Amatuer,

I have done as advised.

The folders were initialy hidden but managed to delete them successfully.

And as for the AVG Anti-Spyware, i actually already had the software but my trial period has ALREADY expired and i don't have the option to enable the real time protection shield! haha!

I have created a new system restore point as advised and also reactivated Windows Defender.

Thank you for walking me through my computer's clean-up process. You have really been of great help. I have read the webpage on how to prevent malware, and HOPEFULLY you won't see me here again!

Thanks bro,

With appreciation,

deepan
