Hi again Bronwyn

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your system is clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Reply to Glaswegian re Trojan Threat

Hi Iain

Thanks for the very detailed instructions in helping me clean up my infected PC. I have followed them and have the reports you require. To show what I have done, I have included each action under the headers you supplied me, and have marked them in GREEN (I have deleted any instructions that did not require a specific action to keep this reply simple and clear.
I did the fix on the weekend, but got pulled away often as we had houseguests (really frustrating as I am desperate to fix this), so had to start again today as I wanted one clear run at it with the reports all generated concurrently as they happened. I hope that this has not affected any of the results, and should you require the weekend’s results I have saved them.

Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems.
I HAVE HAD AN ISSUE WHEN STARTING UP THE COMPUTER – started on Friday:
A window pops up called Windows Installer
It says ‘Preparing to install’
Another window then pops up called Corel Paint Shop Pro X, and the annotation says ‘The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
I press cancel
Another window then pops up saying ‘Error 1706. No valid source can be found for Corel Paint Shop Pro X’.
Another window then pops up saying ‘The wondows installer cannot continue’.
I then have to hit the cancel button quite a few times and then it goes way and I am able to carry on.

In order to provide you with the best possible help, please ensure that HijackThis logs are produced only while in Normal Mode.

Thanks again for all of your help and I look forward to you reply and diagnosis based on the above actions.

Hi again Bronwyn

You did just fine.

As regards Corel – I would just insert the CD when asked – it may be looking for a file. Once the installer has found what it needs you shouldn’t be asked again.

Things look good, but we’ll try another online scan.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

A Welcome screen will appear - click 'Accept' at the bottom. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended
Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log. Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems. In order to provide you with the best possible help, please ensure that HijackThis logs are produced only while in Normal Mode.

Grin Follow up post Kaspersky Scan for Trojan virus query

Hi again Iain

I have run the Kaspersky scan, log below, as well as a fresh HiJackThis log, also below. Thanks again for your help and i feel we may be getting closer to finding the solution to this problem. I have a few questions for you, re security and me carrying on once we have finished, but i will save these for once my PC is clean (keeps it simpler I think).
Thanks and regards
Bron

Hi Bronwyn

Well done - your log is clean. Any more problems? If not we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure.

You can go ahead and delete any special tools we used (SmitRem, SmitfraudFix, ComboFix, etc). They won't serve a future purpose and are replaced with updated versions frequently, so the copies you have are probably already out of date and there is therefore no need to keep them.

Reset Hidden/System Files
To reset your hidden and system files:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

System Restore
To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

Ad-aware

Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

IE-SPYAD
IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here.

SnoopFree

SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems.

MVPS Hosts File

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

Alternate Browsers

Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer
Firefox
Opera
Maxthon

Firewalls

A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Comodo Personal Firewall
Sygate Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm

Anti Virus Software

It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:
Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are three very good free Antivirus products which are available:
BitDefender Free
Avast!
AVG

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Other Protection

Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

PC Safety & Security - What Do I Need?.
Making Internet Explorer Safer.

Keep clean and safe and enjoy your computing!

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Reply to Glaswegian re trojan removal

Good morning Iain, is it as windy where you are as it is here?

Thanks for the reply. I have been away over the last few days, but am now ready to finish off as per your directions.
I have a few questions :
the Kaspersky log showed a virus, but you said my log was clean:
Scan Statistics:
Total number of scanned objects: 67476
Number of viruses found: 1
Number of infected objects: 3 / 0
Number of suspicious objects: 0

Also when i booted up this am, McAfee runs a weekly scheduled scan and it picked up the trojan in exactly the same place as before C:/WINDOWS/system32/YourReminder.dll.
I am a bit confused about this as it seem i am still infected - please can you advise.
I have also picked up a new thing that is happening - a file called thumbs.dp has appeared on my desktop and in a few folders, as well as a file called default.rdp and another called desktop.ini. They are all fainter than the normal icons i.e. seem to be ghost images or at half resolution - I have no idea where these have come from or why they have appeared - can you help?
Shall i, in the meantime, run the activities you mentioned in your last post to me?
Thanks and i look forward to your reply.

Hi Bronwyn

The Kaspersky scan reported a file that is used by various programmes - it's a remote access programme. Since Kas can't tell exactly what the file is being used for, it flags it as suspicious. But it this case, it's legit.

You're using WinVNC which is remote desktop application and those files you mentioned are part of that application (as was the Kas file).

However, we need to see where the other file is, so firstly delete your existing copy of ComboScan. A newer, updated version is available, so we'll use that - just follow these instructions (again...)

Download ComboScan to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on comboscan.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - minimised > ComboScan.txt and maximised > Supplementary.txt.
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of ComboScan.txt back in this thread (do not attach it).
  5. Please attach Supplementary.txt to your post.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

Grin Trojan Generic.dp

Hi Iain

I sent of the results of the ComboScan to you a little earlier, and in the meantime ran another McAfee scan and guess what - the generic.dp has gone, and 9 cookies were removed (which it does as and when it needs to). Do you know how this might have happened?
I would like to stay with this thread and with your advice as i would like to ensure my computer is as fully protected as it can be at all times. I know that i also need to reset some of my setting that i changed when running some of the recent scans (as per your post 27/02). I hope that once you have reviewed the log from the ComboScan, you will not have picked up anything else suspicious or ominous, as i am most keen to getting back to normal.
Once this is resolved, i will of course want the thread marked resolved. Thanks for your help and if i did not have you to help me i would have been a very worried individual.
B

Hi Bronwyn

That file is not showing up anywhere. Can you go into the System32 folder and see if you can find it?

Sounds like McAfee removed generic.dp.

We'll get to the bottom of this, don't worry. As of now your logs are showing a clean system.

Reply ComboScan for Trojan

Hi Iain
The file that was infected with the generic.dp trojan was C:\WINDOWS\System32\YourReminder.dll. That file is no longer in Sys 32. Good news? I also did a search for it, and nothing came up!

Shall i now go ahead and follow the instructions of a previous thread of yours, where i do the System Restore, Hidden files etc and install the protection programmes you recommended?

BTW, someone on the Mcafee forum contacted me as they saw my post there, with exactly the same issue. They got a guy in who uninstalled McAfee and installed AVG. The problem went away. I hope that the guys at McAfee have seen this thread we have, and will have an update for their paying customers to ensure it does not happen again. What are your feelings on McAfee? My current license runs out in Aug and i paid £84.96 for the 2-year subscription. To be fair this is the first virus that has got through, but i have had intermittant issues with the spamkiller/virusscan using up to 75% of CPU which slows the whole thing down. Shall i stick with it or uninstall it completely. Will the other programmes you recommended run in tandem with it or will there be some clashes?

You have been such a star and i have felt in very safe hands through this process. In addition i have learned a fair bit about how my computer works and about new software. Thanks for all of this.

Hi Bronwyn

Glad to hear that file is no longer around. I didn't think it would be and it sounds like more of an 'echo' from previous McAfee scans.

My own personal view? I've never paid for an AV or any other security programme (but then again, I am a Scot...). I always feels that programmes like McAfee are really aimed at companies - they're the ones that pay the most and the ones that the AV companies court. When your subscription runs out (or sooner if you wish), I would switch to one suggested in my earlier post. I use AVG, and all the items in my signature and I've never been infected. The bigger AVs also tend to be resource hogs, sucking up all your processor power and slowing down your system. AVs like AVG, AVAST etc are small but efficient.

You can now follow my suggestions in Post #6. Any queries just post back.
