Trojan Found - Spy-Agent.bf.dldr

This all started around January 18th / 19th when McAfee Security Centre first reported finding a Trojan 'Spy-Agent.bf.dldr'. However McAfee seems unable to handle it - none of Delete; Quarantine; or Clean can access the file (message - check file is not write protected). The file it seems to be addressing is C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\lpt8.exe. I have tried to delete this file directly myself using windows but it comes back with the message 'Cannot delete lpt8: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path & file name'. It seems this is almost like a ghost file.

Everytime I start my computer it comes up with the McAfee message 'McAfee ActiveShield has found a suspect file on your computer. McAfee strongly recommends that you scan your computer now'. I have run numerous scans and it fails to find anything wrong. However, certain actions (nothing consistent) seem to trigger this trojan into life and McAfee immediately sends the message 'Trojan Found - Spy-Agent.bf.dldr' but as before none of the selected actions within McAfee address the problem.

I have run a McAfee scan in 'Safe Mode' (it took over 4 hours to run which is unusual - not sure if you make anything of that) but it found nothing. I have tried performing about 30 full system restore as far back to last November but they all errored so I disabled the 'System Restore' option as I was concerned that they were corrupt or the restore process had been corrupted.

What has made this more 'pressing' is that my Credit Card was hacked on the 19th January, which I guess is more than coincidence.

I have worked through your 5 steps and attach the following details:

ComboScan v20070212.14 run by Nick on 2007-02-18 at 19:25:38
Computer is in Normal Mode.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

System Restore was disabled; re-enabling.
Failed to create restore point: System Restore is disabled (service is not running).
Performed disk cleanup.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.

The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.

Please make every effort to reply to my posts in a timely manner. Malware breeds malware and the longer an infection remains on a system, the more
likely additional infections will result.

Hello Fredmh

Many thanks for your attention to this problem.

I believe I have done all that you ask and have attached the relevant files.
I'll now reboot again and update the thread with the outcome.

Thanks Nick.

Hi Fred,

Have rebooted. The McAfee message when Windows first fires-up is still there, however the machine definately seems to run faster.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

----------------------------------------

We got the main part of LOP. Now let's go after the rest of the junk.

----------------------------------------

DOWNLOADS

CLEANUP! version 4.52 – TEMP FILE CLEANING

Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later.

Alternative link Cleanup Alt

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Please download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  1. Install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.
  2. Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG A-S 7.5
  3. On the top of the main screen click Shield
  4. Click the word active to change it to inactive
  5. On the top of the main screen click Update.
  6. Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  7. I also recommend changing the "Update interval" to something more reasonable like 12 hours.

----------------------------------------

DISABLE NT SERVICES

Click Start->Run - type services.msc & then click on the OK button
*Locate the service - UpdKpg
*Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
*Under the General tab: <--Take note and write down the *Service name given as we will need it shortly.
*Stop the service by using the Stop button.
*Change the Startup type to Disabled & then click on the OK button

Next, start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools...> Delete an NT service...
*In the popup box that appears, type in the *Service Name you found in the General Tab for UpdKpg.
Do NOT allow a reboot yet.

Hi Fred,

I have followed your instructions with varying degrees of success:

1) The first issue is that I could not delete file C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\lpt8.exe it returned the message 'Cannot delete lpt8.exe. Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name'

2) I'm not sure what happened as the download seemed to work OK, but when I then came to run 'Cleanup!' it wouldn't run saying that it was the incorrect file size

On reboot back with normal mode the warning message from McAfee about the 'suspect file' what Windows first fires up no longer appears.

However, running AVG was OK but when I ran Panda ActiveScan it triggered the message from McAfee warning that a Trojan had been found.

I have appended the relevant logs.

Nick.

Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Please ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this
webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

----------------------------------------

Since you couldn't find the lpt file, that would indicate it's gone. Now let's go after what the scanners found.

----------------------------------------

DOWNLOADS

REGISTRY FIX

Download the attached nick.zip file at the bottom of this post to your desktop. Double click on the zip folder,
then double click on the .reg file within.
Click yes to allow it to merge into your registry.

----------------------------------------

DISABLE ANTI-SPYWARE APPLICATIONS

Please disable these Anti-Spyware programs as they may interfere with this fix. You may re-enable them after we clean your system.

Windows Defender

Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools>Options.
  • Scroll down and uncheck "Use real-time protection (recommended)".
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

----------------------------------------

SAFE MODE RE-BOOT

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Hi Nick -

fredmh is a bit under the weather, and we're looking in on his threads while he rests.

For now, please carry on with the rest of the instructions. We'll get back to the regfix in the Nick.zip file in a next reply.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-hkey_current_user\software\MyWebSearch]
Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Registry Cleaner Version 4.0

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 <<<this is an outdated version, and a security risk simply by having it on the machine. Leave Update 9 alone for now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Show List Setup Poll] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AdminIntraShowList\Dashbore.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Registry Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Registry Cleaner Trial\Regclean.exe" -startminimize

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Delete the following if they exist:

C:\Documents and Settings\Charlotte\Application Data\mp3daleweb
C:\Documents and Settings\Charlotte\Local Settings\Temp\bis5.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AdminIntraShowList
C:\Program Files\Registry Cleaner Trial

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run fl.bat once more, and post the resulting findlop.txt

Also run ComboScan once again and post it's log.

Let me know how your system is behaving, please.

Re: Trojan Found - Spy-Agent.bf.dldr

Hi Tetonbob,

Sorry I've not responded sooner.

Prior to taking your actions I managed to get CleanUp to finally work and ran it, it deleted over 22Gb of 'files' on the hard disk. I have now completed all the actions you requested and have attached the associated logs. The system seems to be running really well.

One point to note is that Windows Defender runs a full sacn once a week and it seems to trigger a message from McAfee re file lpt8.exe, although this is the only time this message appears.

Nick.

Re: Trojan Found - Spy-Agent.bf.dldr

I have run OTMoveIt and attached the log.

It says that it can't find lpt8.exe which seems to be the case for most tools, but it is still visable via Windows Explorer.

I have run Windows Defender on the folder that triggers the McAfee message and it still appears, it says 'The file C:\Porgram Files\Common Files\System\lpt8.exe is infected by the Spy-Agent.bf.dldr trojan and cannot be cleaned'. If I take any of the actions listed (Delete, Quarantine, or Clean) it always says 'Status: Cannot be deleted - Verify that the file is not write-protected and try again'. If I try to reset the write protect via windows explorer it returns the message that it can't find the file.

Thanks Nick.

Re: Trojan Found - Spy-Agent.bf.dldr

1. Please download The Avenger to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Quote:
Files to Delete:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\lpt8.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Looks like we needed a bigger hammer.

How's your system running now?

Re: Trojan Found - Spy-Agent.bf.dldr

Well done. Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

AVG Anti-Spyware would be a good program to keep, update and run a scan with once a week or so. It adds another layer of protection to your system's security tools. You may want to prevent AVG Anti-Spyware from running at Windows startup, and just call it into service when needed. This may help with system boot times. To do so, right click on the AVG A/S system tray icon, and uncheck Start with Windows. Also disable it's real time protection, as this will also use system resources, and will time out at the end of the trial period in 30 days. To do so:

Open AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
