ComboScan, AVG A-S and Panda only report what they see on the system--they are there.

They were all created within minutes of each other around 11pm on 1/17/2007.

All these folders are roughly the same small size--not normal for the actual malware folder.

The files possibly cannot be removed by Smitfraud because they may in fact be folders placed by an anti malware tool in order to thwart the 'real' malware from infecting the system.

Can you think of any so-called anti malware tool you or someone else may have used around that time on that date? Mwav, maybe?

Hmmmm... I don't recall adding a anti-malware tool.......

Ok, let's test my theory. I'm going to have you use a tool to delete one of the 'smitfraud' files still remaining, but I'm going to designate it as a folder--let's see what happens:

Please download The Avenger to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Quote:
Folder to delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcomcfg.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Got to the end of this and got an error

Error: Selected file does not appear to be a valid script.

Ok, look on your system for dcomcfg.exe. It specifies the path as C:\Windows\System32

Please tell me if it is a folder or a file. If you do not see it in that location, do a search via Start>Search>All files and folders for it.

Make sure you do have the hidden files/folders enabled. Here are the instructions once again:

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click OK.

That's what I thought--and it should be a file. That explains why both Smitfraud tools failed to delete those.

One more test--look for this one C:\Program Files\zango is this a file or folder?

Cool--that explains everything. Including why your system still was operating while you apparently had all that 'malware' on your system.

While none of those are real 'malware', it would be prudent to remove them to avoid any future 'going 'round in circles' should you ever require our help again.

I had an error in my previous script for Avenger, so let's try it again so you hopefully don't have to go through manual deletion of these.

Please download The Avenger to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Quote:
Files to delete:

C:\Program Files\e2give
C:\Program Files\exact
C:\Program Files\ezurl
C:\Program Files\flcp

C:\Program Files\medialoads
C:\Program Files\medialoads enhanced
C:\Program Files\ncase
C:\Program Files\need2find
C:\Program Files\surfsidekick
C:\Program Files\surfsidekick 2
C:\Program Files\zango
C:\Program Files\zango games
C:\Program Files\zango programs
C:\Program Files\zangoclient

Folders to delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\anti_troj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcomcfg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxmpp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\intmon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ishost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ismon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\isnotify.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\issearch.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbe.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscornet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MTC.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nuclabdll.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvms.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regperf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\replmap.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shnlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\twain32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiatwain.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zlbw.dll

  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

If Avenger fails, then go after them manually using the list in the Avenger script.

Me too--it's 2 am here.

You'll have to look for them manually through your system to delete them.

Yes, now delete all of theses bearing in mind that you will see the files as folders and the folders as files.

C:\WINDOWS\ads.js
C:\WINDOWS\avpcc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\BTGrab.dll
C:\WINDOWS\dlmax.dll
C:\WINDOWS\olehelp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Pynix.dll
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ZServ.dll!
C:\Program Files\MMediaCodec
C:\Program Files\SpywareStrike

After you've done that, your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Run SmitfraudFix Option 1 one more time and post it here.

Go ahead and get that last C:\winstall.exe

Back to your original issue with Outlook Express--how is your system behaving?
