wauclt.exe

I just know this is posted in the wrong place but..
I am currently following the procedure for posting my Hijackthis log but in the mean time I have a question.
In my Task Manager there is a program (or whatever it might be) that I did not recognize, it is called wauclt.exe, when I do a search for it on Microsoft it has warnings back in 2004 and prior that state this is an immediate threat and must be removed. When I try to follow their instructions for removal they have a lot of options for the different operating systems. Here is the problem it never has an option new enough for my system. It only offers support up to XP SP1 which I imagine was the latest available in 2004. When I search for threads about this particular "program" in the threads here a person mentioned it specifically, yet in receiving assistance the person helping did not (at all) think this was a threat. The thread was very new (today if I remember correctly) so is it no longer a threat? Is it something I do not need to concern myself with? Well while waiting for a reply I am going to continue the procedure for turning in a hijack log.
Thanks for your assistance.
Jeff

okay, well the wauclt.exe was in a Microsoft Video Capture Controls for a worm called " Win32/Slinbot.ALJ ".

Win32/Slinbot.ALJ is IRC controlled backdoor that can be used to gain unauthorized access to a victim's machine. It can also spread by exploiting weak passwords on administrative shares, by exploiting several vulnerabilities, and by using backdoors created by other malware, so bad maxx when this Win32/Slinbot.ALJ is executed this variant copies itself to the %System% directory as WAUCLT.EXE and makes the following modifications to the registry to ensure that this file is executed at each Windows system start:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Microsoft Video Capture Controls = "wauclt.exe"
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Microsoft Video Capture Controls = "wauclt.exe"
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\Microsoft Video Capture Controls = "wauclt.exe".

But anyways this process is most likely a virus or trojan, and runs as a .ajd worm.

But I'm sure you know this already, XD.

So as of what you're doing please do so to upload the HJT log, and sure a TSF security member will guide you through.

P.S. sorry, I didn't provide really decent information, just pretty much gave you more info on it.

Hmmm no I didn't know that (But anyways this process is most likely a virus or trojan, and runs as a .ajd worm.) I am not too bright when it comes to this stuff. Right at the moment I am having major trouble even finishing a scan by the Panda Active Scan. Prior to it finishing the actual scan my Internet Exporer shuts down. It also took me 6 attempts to install the VX2 Cleaner so it would be recognized by the Ad-AdwarSE as an add-on!
Well I'm going to try the Panda Scan once more, if I can not get it to work I'm going to bed and start over tomorrow!
Thanks for the info!

I can not get the Panda Scan to complete a scan. It shuts down my I.E. after scanning about 1/4 of the way through (according to the Panda Scan meter) this has happened 7 times in a row. I have had enough for this evening (I'm going bald fast enough the way it is!) so I give up for now. I am of course open to any suggestions, and will implement them first thing in the morning (providing there are any) thanks again for your help.

Here's some information on the malicious file WAUCLT.EXE:
http://spywarefiles.prevx.com/RRHFFH...t%252Eexe.html

Prevx report they are capable of removing this threat with their free trial so it may be worth giving that a shot. It's a pay-for program, but their free trial is fully-functional for at least 30 days which will remove any infections for free during this period. If you don't wish to keep it after cleanup, simply uninstall it.

The same filename may have been used years ago as mentioned by Microsoft, but there are also new malware infections using this same filename as late as January this year, under infections such as Worm.Ircbot.Gen and Trojan.SystemPoser. See here:
http://spywarefiles.prevx.com/ssHFFH.../WAUCmore.html

Many new infections are adding lines to your hosts file in order to stop you visiting sites which may be able to help or delete the malware, as well as some that actively target certain security applications and stop them from running or completing their scans (as you have witnessed with Panda).

The 5 Step guide does say that if you cannot complete something then just move to the next step. Please do not delete any files or fix anything yourself until you receive help from a trained analyst - you may end up with a useless system and then have to re-install your OS and all other programmes.

Okay, I hope I am following the right guidelines by posting my Combo Log here. As I understand it I should not start a new thread but continue this one?? I hope so.

Okay my computer is a 2.8GHz Dell Dimension 4600 with 512MB of Ram. I always keep my Ad-Aware SE Personal, CCleaner, Spybot - Search & Destroy, and Spyware Blaster up to date. Over the past few years I have found them very effective. I also use Camtech's Spysite which is a Data Base of 16,666 websites known to be problematic and you upload them in the Restricted folder in Internet Options/Security.

My computer used to be so fast it amazed me, I could also multi task with no noticable slow down. Lately it is patheticly slow, if I am printing a couple of pages I need to wait until it is done to take on another task. So I made sure everything was up to date, no progress there. I found wauclt.exe in my Task Manager window, eventually leading me here. I followed the 5 Steps but could not get a Panda ActiveScan to complete, it shut down my Internet Explorer 8 different times. I also tried to remove the wauclt.exe by installing Prevx, it did not even detect it after 3 scans nor any other problem, so I uninstalled it.
This brings me to my combo scan. I want to thank you for helping and I am sorry if I am posting it in the wrong place.

Hi again Jeff

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

Apologies for any delay in replying, but we have been rather busy lately, and, of course, all our helpers are volunteers.

ComboScan will also have produced another log file, located at C:\ComboScan\Supplementary.txt - please attach this file to your next reply.

To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\ComboScan\Supplementary.txt
  3. Click Upload.

Is this a work or home system and did you set any restrictions, such as no access to Control Panel?

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your system is clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

Show Hidden Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Downloads
Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (dependent on your system this may be F5 or another key)
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Uninstall Programmes
Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if present):

ViewMgr

File Deletions
Delete the following Folder indicated in BLUE if it still exists.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Run CleanUp!
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows:

Click Options
Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp!
Check the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the “Temporary Files” tab and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked.

Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and DO NOT REBOOT when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these BEFORE running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility.

Run AVG Anti Spyware
Run AVG with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • When the scan is complete click Recommended Action and change it to Quarantine
  • Then click Apply all actions
Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: AVG scan may require an hour.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Online Scan
Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

A Welcome screen will appear - click 'Accept' at the bottom. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended
Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Logs required
AVG Log
Kaspersky Log
HijackThis Log
Attach C:\ComboScan\Supplementary.txt

Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems. In order to provide you with the best possible help, please ensure that HijackThis logs are produced only while in Normal Mode.

All requested logs

Okay, I have finally finished all of the tasks.
To answer your questions:
Is this a work or home system? Home System
Did you set any restrictions, such as no access to control panel? I would have no idea how to do so, so I do not believe so.
Please let us know how your system is performing now.It seems fine, but it always did with the exception of multi-tasking. Also I had noticed an unusual number of internet explorer errors which required a shut down of Internet Explorer. So far they have not re-occured
I have a few questions of my own as well. Should I leave the Spyware guard installed? I am just concerned with too many programs running at one time. What should I do with the other two Anti-Virus software programs? i.e. AVG & Kaspersky?
Also a rather large problem, perhaps. I could not locate my hijackthis log ANYWHERE! I therefore ran a new one and posted it.

Just skimming through the Kasersky Log I noticed the quarrentined object (at least the first few in the log) all appeared to be in the symantec sytem a couple I recognized as being test viruses from long ago anti-virus system tests, did this program actually find new or previously undetected viruses?Thank you very much for your help.

Here are the requested logs:

Hi Jeff

Spywareguard is essential as far as I’m concerned. It just sits in the background and will block spyware before it can do anything. The Kaspersky ActiveX control can be deleted. AVG AS is an excellent scanner – you should run it on a regular basis – it’s stand alone so if you’re not running it, it won’t be using any resources. Good security requires a multi-layered approach – a mix of programmes that will stop the vast majority of malware. I have made some recommendations below – all run in the background and will not interfere with your normal PC routine.

Clear out Norton's Quarantine folder. If you're unsure on how to do it, you can use Symantec's guide.

Run a scan with HijackThis and fix these entries

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Other than that your log is clean. Any more problems? If not we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure. Some you already have but others you won’t.

You can go ahead and delete any special tools we used (SmitRem, SmitfraudFix, ComboFix, etc). They won't serve a future purpose and are replaced with updated versions frequently, so the copies you have are probably already out of date and there is therefore no need to keep them.

Reset Hidden/System Files
To reset your hidden and system files:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

System Restore
To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

Ad-aware

Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

IE-SPYAD
IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here.

SnoopFree

SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems.

MVPS Hosts File

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

Alternate Browsers

Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer
Firefox
Opera
Maxthon

Firewalls

A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Comodo Personal Firewall
Sygate Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm

Anti Virus Software

It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:
Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are three very good free Antivirus products which are available:
BitDefender Free
Avast!
AVG

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Other Protection

Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

PC Safety & Security - What Do I Need?.
Making Internet Explorer Safer.

Keep clean and safe and enjoy your computing!

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Two more questions

Comboscan.exe does not show up in add/remove software, how should I remove it?
So many of the recommended programs are redundant to what I already have, (four different programs preventing Browser Hijacking for instance) but you said they sit in the background until needed. I do not understand how a program can not be using resources when unless many of these "background" programs are shutdown memory intensive games do not function well if at all.

I do not use Microsofts GoBack system, but Symantics instead. Is it still required to shut off and reset the Go Back?

Thank you for your help again.

Forgotten problem and now a reoccurrence.

Forgot another VERY important problem, about 1/2 the time I reboot my computer I get a warning or notice from my Firewall that Internet Explorer is trying to connect to the Internet. I have a broadband connection so of course I.E. is trying to connect, the thing is Symantec has already done an (Rule) Automatically Configured the rule for this, I should not be getting this warning. I always choose Block This Instance as once when I chose Always Block I could not connect to the internet. After blocking the instance I.E. conects in the normal manner. I figured this problem was cleared up with the fixes we had done, until 1:30am February 20th when once again I received the warning. I again blocked it and I.E. again connected to the internet in the normal manner.

Hi

comboscan is a stand alone file - just delete it directly from your desktop. You don't have to install everything I suggested - they are just that, suggestions. It's really up to you and what suits your system setup.

I have no knowledge of Symantec so I can't really comment on that.

The problem with IE sounds as though it could be with the firewall - check the rules already set. If no joy I would suggest the IE Forum - some real experts with IE will be able to help.
