Can't get rid of NUMEROUS pop ups!! Help Please. HJT Log file posted here.
________________________________________
Ok, my friends computer has a MAJOR pop up issue. I’m talking every time she opens a browser window pop ups completely take over, after she closes them all and tries to close the browser, the pop ups take over again. Like 20 or more at a time-seriously. It’s bad; I’ve never seen anything like it. It doesn’t matter what site she goes to even the normal sites like Google and msn hotmail. Sites that I and most people go to everyday with no problems. She has a McAfee suite 2007 now, but obviously the pop up blocker is not working on it either. The pop up problems has been going on for several months now, she did have the previous version of McAfee, so we uninstalled it and installed various other programs at different times and ran them. Such as spybot, ad-aware, avg, defender and many others and nothing was ever found. We have set all the pop up blocker features turned on with both the McAfee and through Windows XP to the highest level. Obviously there is a deeper issue going on here and we just don’t know where to look. Any advice please? I have attached a HJT log from about a month ago. We can run a new one if needed. Not much has changed other than the McAfee stuff. Thank you so much for any help with this. Please make every effort to reply to my posts in a timely manner. Malware breeds malware and the longer an infection remains on a system, the more likely additional infections will result. ---------------------------------------- There's not much showing in your log, so we're going to find out what may be hiding in your system. ---------------------------------------- HIJACK THIS IN TEMP FOLDER You are running Hijack This from a temporary directory. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C: then click on File > New > Folder and call it HJT , or another name of your choice. The program creates backup files that we may need to use later. If the program is in a Temporary folder, files may be deleted by you or automatically if your system is set to empty temp files. ---------------------------------------- MULTIPLE ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMS You are currently running multiple Anti Virus programs. Unlike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other This can cause conflicts and confusion between the AV programs as well as system instability. Please choose and run only 1 and uninstall the other. ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove program. For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this: Re-install the program -> Reboot -> Uninstall The Anti-Virus Programs on your system are: Grisoft AVG Free McAfee ---------------------------------------- DOWNLOADS CLEANUP! version 4.52 – TEMP FILE CLEANING Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later. Alternative link Cleanup Alt *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups. Yes, they were all still there except for the ones that started with msxxx.dll and I was able to delete everything else out that you had listed. When I restarted the pc and logged back in as normal mode, I didn't have any pop ups. :)
Thank you so much!! I very much appreciate all of your help! |

Additional log files & HJT files attached
Here are the two file reports you requested. Combofix & HJT. I deleted the following folders from program files you had listed: mailskinner, free spyware scanner and companion wizard. Neither mailskinner or freespyscanner were listed in add/remove programs.

We still have one piece of malware which doesn't want to let go.

Make sure to close any open browsers. ---------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [jctoxwm] c:\windows\system32\jctoxwm.exe jctoxwm Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. ---------------------------------------- UNHIDE HIDDEN FILES Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. ---------------------------------------- Delete the following Files indicated in RED if they still exist. c:\windows\system32\jctoxwm.exe ---------------------------------------- SYSTEM RE-BOOT Reboot into Normal Mode. ---------------------------------------- FOLLOW-UP Please return and post these items in the order listed: A new HJT log run in Normal Mode Please note: In order to properly see what is on your system, all HJT logs must be run in the normal mode Please let me know how your system is behaving.

If you couldn't find the file, then it's gone from your system.
Your logs are now clean. Please complete the next "housekeeping" steps and read through the information below. ---------------------------------------- Windows XP - Reset Hidden Files
---------------------------------------- Clean-out and Reset System Restore This will clean out any junk or malicious files left behind in System Restore
This will create a new Restore Point. ---------------------------------------- RE-ENABLE ANTI-SPYWARE APPLICATIONS If you were instructed to dis-able Anti-spyware applications during this fix, you may re-enable them ---------------------------------------- Please read through the following information to help protect your computer in the future. KEEP YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM UPDATED Please ensure that you have already patched your system against the recent WMF exploit. Go to this page to get the KB912919 patch MICROSOFT UPDATES It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. ENABLE WINDOWS AUTO UPDATE Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date" Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify". Click on "OK". ENABLE WINDOWS AUTO UPDATE From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
TOOLS TO HELP KEEP YOUR SYSTEM CLEAN Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here AD-AWARE Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here IE-SPYAD IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
A tutorial for IE-SPYAD can be found here MVPS HOST FILE The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop. Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine. MCAFEE SITE ADVISOR SITE ADVISOR is a free IE plug-in (also suport for Firefox browser) which is used in conjunction with the Google search engine. It advises which web sites are considered safe and which sites could pose a problem. It also shows what problems were encountered with each site, such as malicious downloads, spam, and related links. ANTI-VIRUS AND FIREWALL PROGRAMS ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: Anti-Spyware Tutorial Here are some very good free Antivirus products which are available: If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use: Understanding and Using Firewalls INFORMATIONAL READING In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. You can delete any tools we used. When deleting ComboFix, also look for a file - c:\subs and delete that also.
I would hang onto HJT for a bit, should any problems arise.
