TrojanDNSchanger.hg
Folks:
I followed all the steps on the "Please read this before posting..." link. A new anti-spyware program (AVG Anti-Spyware) says that I have a high-risk trojan (TrojanDNSchanger.hg) but nothing else sees it including my resident McAfee security setup. AVG says I also have some generic adware. I tell the program to fix it and it says it is fixed. However, when I look at the so-called "bugs," the trojan is not listed there. When I run the program again it doesn't find these bugs but when I reboot, the bugs are back. So, I don't know if the AVG Anti-Spyware is REALLY finding a trojan that no other software can see (in SAFE MODE I had McAfee and Symantec both do a scan and they saw nothing) or if this is just a scam to get me to buy their software. So, I'm not sure what to do. My computer is running VERY slowly so I think something is wrong but it may or may not be related to this TrojanDNSchanger.hg bug. Thank you in advance for any clarity and assistance you can provide to help me resolve this situation. Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.
Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. AVG Anti-Spyware is correct. You show signs of DNSChanger. We use this tool all the time, and recommend it. This is but round 1 of what could be several posts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix. Please download FixWareout from one of these sites: http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal. Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved. Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found): O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{ADC80F04-304B-4B90-9624-24D63B647DEF}: NameServer = 85.255.113.115,85.255.112.70 O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{C7A3AB9E-8EDD-4621-AD00-CF82ED98D365}: NameServer = 85.255.113.115,85.255.112.70 O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.115 85.255.112.70 O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.115 85.255.112.70 O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.115 85.255.112.70 Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis. Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic. Also, please post the results from your use of AVG Anti-Spyware, located at C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports. **If you receive an error message while trying to run FixWareout, copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, and run FixWareout again. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did everything in your last missive. There are a couple of issues: 1. There apparently was no log created by the last HijackThis run or else it wasn't saved. The only one I can find is the one I sent you yesterday (original post). 2. There are no reports in the AVG Anti-Spyware Reports folder - it is completely empty. Should I run it again and make sure that a report is saved? Please advise. Thanks for your assistance, mnilan P.S. Great avatar! Excellent! Let's perform this thorough cleaning.
Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see you have AVG Anti-Spyware already. Please update it's definitions, and run a scan where I have placed it in this fix. Run AVG Anti-Spyware
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
Restart in normal mode. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
![]()
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please return with results from: AVG Anti-Spyware Panda online scan How is your system behaving now, please?

Looks good!
tetonbob:
I performed all the steps. I have put the AVG report below but the Panda scan had no report. I am assuming that this was because their scan didn't find anything. After the scan, Panda wanted to put a "motor" and several "controles" files on my computer which I blocked... At any rate, things look good at this point. Please accept my sincere thanks for your patience and your assistance. mnilan AVG report ==================================== --------------------------------------------------------- AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 5:30:58 PM 1/26/2007 + Scan result: Nothing found. ::Report end |

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.
Create a new System Restore point
Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: If you do not have a firewall, here are a few free ones available for personal use: In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Done
tetonbob:
Sorry for the delay - had a trip to take. Done all the things listed in your last missive. Everything seems to function. However, web browsing and opening any Microsoft application is very ssllllooooowwwwwwwwwwwww... Seriously, it takes minutes to open an MS WORD or MS EXCEL document and traversing a link (I use Firefox which used to be lightening quick) is almost as painful. This is an issue since the majority of my work is through a website at work. I'm wondering if this is because of all those security filters. Is this now what is "normal?" Anyway, thanks for a secure system again. |

I have most of them on my system, use Firefox, have only a 1.3 P4 with 1GB RAM, and my system runs fine. Let's see a new HJT log.

Slowdown
tetonbob:
This is a recent slowdown in the response time of the computer - browsing and MS applications (so far) are all I've noticed. Everything else (including AFTER a hyperlink has been crossed and AFTER the application is running) runs fine and seems normal in terms of response time. The only thing added to the system were the programs that we used (i.e., on one or the other of your lists) to clean up my machine. My thought (which, of course, is TOTALLY uninformed) was that maybe the filtering in some of the anti-spy applications was slowing down the most vulnerable attack pathways, i.e., going out on the Web and using someone else's (in my case students') MS WORD and MS EXCEL files... Here is the most recent HyjackThis scan log. Programs added

Here is a list of programs added to my system. Nothing else has been changed since we started this. ====================================== HijackThis FixWareout ATF-Cleaner A bunch of ActiveX things were downloaded as part of the online scans (e.g. Panda ActiveScan was particularly demanding in this way). I assume that these "applets" only work with their respective software apps. It may be that the MVPS hosts file or IESpyad are causing the browsing issues, but they should in no way affect Word or Excel. Those are the only things I can see which might be causing this, though many people use these and experience no such issues.
You can try uninstalling/disabling them, and see if that makes the difference. An easy way to disable the hosts file is with another tool, but you seem relatively comfortable with Windows. Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (no extension). Right-click on it, and select rename. Rename it to a .txt extension, so hosts.txt This will disable it's function, while preserving it, in case there's no difference. If there is no difference, please rename it back to hosts (no extension) IESpyad can be uninstalled by running the install.bat in the IESpyad folder, and this time selecting Option 1 and Option 3. Again, if this makes no difference, restore it's capability by running install.bat and Selecting Option 2 and Option 4. Let me know if this makes a difference for you. If your MS Office programs continue to open slowly, you may want to ask for help in our Microsoft Office forum. The staff and members there will be better equipped to address your issues.

That was it
tetonbob:
That was the issue. It may very well be an interaction effect of MVPS hosts/IESpyad and some other software I have running. I don't know enough to address the issue unfortunately. However, my browsing is back to virtually immediate and my MS apps are back to just slow 8^). Thanks again. |

Well, I'm glad we found the answer, but it's disappointing that those protection tools slowed you down. I've seen no such slowdowns on any of my systems I've installed those on.
You might experiment, and put one back in place at a time, and see which one, or perhaps if it's the combination of the two, which is slowing down your system. That's up to you.
