spyware detected even with Norton
I have norton 2007 security running but somehow I have spyware or something similar on my laptop. I get the warning triangle in the bottom left corner telling me I have PSW.x_vir spyware and I should click on the balloon to download some software to get rid of it. Norton does not pick this up. It is obviously a plant to force me to be so annoyed to click on it. I am also getting a pop up for a gambling site all the time!
Any ideas anyone? |

Please download HijackThis to your desktop - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\ Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program. 1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'. 2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log. 3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless. ---------------------------------------------------------- Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop. Double-click smitfraudfix.exe to start the tool. Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter" and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

Hi Barnaby -
I see you have more than one Anti-Virus program installed, AVG Free and Norton. Did you mistakenly install this before installing AVG Anti-Spyware? It's not present in your first log. While this may seem like greater protection, it can cause problems including slowdowns and system hangs. Choose one to keep and uninstall the other. Any antivirus program must be removed via add/remove program. For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this: re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall----------------------------------------------------------------------- CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter * Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives * Click Apply Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Post a new HJT log. How is your system behaving now, please? What we do next will depend on this answer.

The system is better, i.e no more false spyware alerts.
However the Norton Software keeps blocking svchost from accessing the net. There is a long list of modules requesting access all from System32 folder. The majority are .dll extensions and .tsp Not sure what they are from as they never used to get blocked by Norton. |

Perhaps you misunderstood me. By "It's not present in your first log", I was referring to AVG Free antivirus.
Norton did show. If it hadn't, I'd have requested you install an AntiVirus program. Since it did show, I did not request you install an AntiVirus program. AVG Anti-Spyware download is located on the same page as the AVG Free AntiVirus download. It's why we use the image to help direct you to the proper download. You appeared to have installed both. Now that's been resolved. ------------------------------------------------------ As far as your Norton alerts go, you may be better off asking your Norton tech support, or in our Security and Firewalls section. I don't use Norton. Perhaps Norton was just updated, and has new definitions it's working from. Perhaps if you provided more detail about the file names seeking access, I could assist. svchost.exe, if located in System32, is a normal Windows file http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056 Ir runs Services, some of which require internet access, such as Auto Update features. ------------------------------------------------------ Let's run another online scan, to make sure there's no other malware lingering. First, do this: CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter * Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives * Click Apply Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK ------------------------------------------------------ Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400 Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked
O3 - Toolbar: Protection Bar - {84938242-5C5B-4A55-B6B9-A1507543B418} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Object\iesplugin.dll (file missing) Close HijackThis now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We seem to have one entry that won't die.
Let's do this.... Copy and paste the following text inside the quote box into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4): Quote:
![]() Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards. Post a new HJT log. Also do this: Run SmitfraudFix Double-click smitfraudfix.exe to start the tool. Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter" and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
