Hello and welcome to TSF .

You may like to subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools located near the top of this page, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant email Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Your log is not showing much, still please follow the next set of instructions to ensure that nothing else is hiding in your system.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not (while in Safe Mode) be available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

_________________________________________________________________

HJT Location:

You are running Hijack This from a temporary directory. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C: then click on File > New > Folder and call it HJT , or another name of your choice. The program creates backup files that we may need to use later. If the program is in a Temporary folder, files may be deleted by you or automatically if your system is set to empty temp files.

_________________________________________________________________

Downloads

1. Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later. Do not install if you are using the 64 bit version of windows. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

The following is the alternate download location for CleanUp!. Please download the program from this link if the main link is out of service:

http://www.stevengould.org/downloads...CleanUp452.exe

2. Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

_________________________________________________________________

Show Hidden Files and Folders

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.

___________________________________________________________________

Fix

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

__________________________________________________________________

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Sample Toolband Serach - res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ToolBand.dll/MENUSEARCH.HTM

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

__________________________________________________________________

Delete the following File indicated in RED if it still exists.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ ToolBand.dll
_________________________________________________________________

Cleanup!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
Do not logoff or reboot when prompted.

AVG Anti-Spyware

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

_________________________________________________________________

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

__________________________________________________________________

Online Scan

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

________________________________________________________________

Open HijackThis and do a System Scan. Post the content of the log file it produces.

_________________________________________________________________

Please provide the following logs with your next post:

AVG Anti-Spyware
Panda Scan
HijackThis (A fresh one)

Please let me know about your systems overall behaviour .

Hi src2206,

I have completed the above and will now post the logs as instructed for your comments. Now that I have completed your instructions the coomputer is back to working as it should. When I removed "ToolBand.dll" the machine sprung back to life, so many thanks.

Please have a look through the 3 Logfiles I have posted so I can feel confident the offending all file/s have been removed from the system.

Look forward to your reply

Regards
Luka123

Well done, your logs are clean!

Please follow the set of instructions to complete the cleaning procedure and to immune your system against the unwanted guests .

Clear IE6 cookies

1. On the Internet Explorer 6 Tools menu, click Internet Options. The Internet Options box should open to the General tab.

2. On the General tab, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Cookies button. This will delete all the cookies that are currently stored in your cache.

3. Click OK, and then click OK again.

You can check this link for more information.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

System Restore

To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

Turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

I can't seem to find Java being installed in your PC. This is a necessary component for your system. Please follow these steps to install the latest version of Java.

Installing Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs, Check and remove all older versions of Java (if any available).
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed (if you found any).
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

After installation, go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK in the Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

MICROSOFT UPDATES

It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

You can alsoautomate this process to save yourself from visiting Microsoft Update Site at regular intervals. To do that Enable Windows Auto Update in the following way
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

SPYWARE PREVENTION SPEECH

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?
THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER
Understanding and Using Firewalls

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • Spyware Blaster - to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items .
  • Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IE-Spyad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, and save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
Now navigate to C:\ie-spyad. Double click to open it. From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4
  • MVPS Hosts file - From within Host.zip, double click on MVPS.bat & allow it to run. This will replace your current Hosts file with one that will block known adware and spy websites

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

FIREWALLS

I suggest that you use a Third Party Firewall to protect your computer better. Using a firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:
FIREFOX

I suggest strongly that you use an alternate browser-Mozilla's Firefox; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker. Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Two more good browsers are Opera and Avant. You can download Opera Web Browser from here and Avant can be downloaded from here. Avant is a browser based on IE engine, but with much more security integrated, like blocking Flash animations etc. It is also very lite on system resources. So those sites which require IE to operate, Avant can be the best and secured replacement.

Protective Programs
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download, Install and update Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. During installation choose to enable the Teatimer option as this will give you real time protection against any registry changes.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Download, Install and update Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Update all these programs along with your AntiVirus regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
  • Run scans with your AntiVirus and other protective programs that I have listed here, at regular intervals and neutralise the threats that these softwares list.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing .

Hi src2206,
I will follow your instructions and post a reply, thanks for your help. As a matter of interest how do you think I picked up the ToolBand.dll" file? Is this a virus as such, or some kind of Malware. Also if you wouldnt mind, I would like to know something about the file and what it does to a system. Thanks for your help.

Well, you really can not attribute this to one particular reason...it may be an effect of a single cause or of multiple causes. I would suggest that you read the articles I have listed under Spyware Prevention Speech [in my last post] to get an overall idea about the causes of this type of unwanted situations.

Toolband is obviously a malware type, known as Adware. It installs itself (generally) without user's knowledge and uses precious system resources to display Advertisements and compromises privacy. You can find more information about this file and the related program here.

Have a safe browsing .
