Hi guys,
My daughter's computer needs help...extremely slow internet. It seems to have started when she tried to dl a new patch for WoW. Followed the recommended steps so far. All scans show clean. HJT log is below. Even I can see she needs to remove Weatherbug and Symantec but need your expertise to see what else is lurking... Hello and Welcome to TechSupport!
First of all you have hijackthis running from a temporary folder. C:\DOCUME~1\Me\LOCALS~1\Temp\~AceTemp\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe Please move it to another folder like c:\HJT\ Yes, you need to uninstall one anti-virus application. Two can interfere with each other. No Firewall Onboard Also I do not see a firewall application installed. Perhaps you have a hardware firewall but a combination of both a software firewall and a hardware firewall is better. Just be sure there are no conflicts. Please do not rely solely on the Windows XP firewall. Using a software firewall other than the XP firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice: Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly. Test Firewall STEP 1. ====== SDFix Also download SDFix.zip and save it to the Desktop. Right click the SDFix.zip folder Select: Extract All to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. ==== Start the computer in Safe Mode : -When the machine first starts again, tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. -Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys. -Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode. ==== Open the SDFix folder on the Desktop, and double click RunThis.bat to start the script. Type Y to begin the cleanup process. The process removes any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found, and then prompts you to press any key to Reboot. Press any key to restart the PC. When the PC restarts the SDFix will run again and complete the removal process It then displays Finished Press any key to end the script and load the Desktop icons. Once the Desktop icons load, the SDFix report opens on screen and saves itself in the SDFix folder as Report.txt. Please post (reply) with the Report.txt and a fresh hijackthis log.

Hello yustr, nice meeting you!
============= WeatherBug is installed on your computer. It is technically not spyware but the free version is adware supported. Its removal is recommended, but it is up to you whether you want to do so. An ad free alternative is Weather Pulse: http://tropicdesigns.net/weatherpulse.php In order to avoid future problems with Weatherbug, make sure the program is not running before uninstalling it. If there is a WeatherBug icon in the system tray (in the lower right hand corner of the screen) right-click on it and choose "Exit WeatherBug" or "Terminate Weatherbug". Once the program is closed, then remove it easily from the Add or Remove Programs section of the Control Panel by following these steps: Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs In the list of currently installed programs, select: WeatherBug Click: Remove =============== Updating Java
==================== HijackThis is being run from a temporary folder; this means that any backups it creates as a result of fixes made with it will be lost. Please create a new folder for it and place the program into that new folder. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted. How do you make a permanent folder? Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files. In the menu bar, File->New->Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there. ================= Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Weather bug doesn't appear in Add/Remove Program list nor is there an icon for it in the task bar...
I deleted all java from the Add/Remove list but could not complete the installation of JRE 6 - every time it would get to Windows installer and freeze. Here's the new HJT log. I am not sure about the Java problem, I will have to research that.
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this. Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis. Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folders, and delete it (if it exists) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\<=folder Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards. ====================== Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer: Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner * Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and the Kapersky log.

Bless you for figuring out the Java problem. The Sun site is always coming out with updates to Java to fix security issues.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following: O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll (file missing) Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis. Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer: Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner * Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Post (reply) with the Kapersky log and a fresh HijackThis log.

Yes, Kapersky just shows the one infected _restore point. We always wait until the end to clear the restore points. In extreme case with problems we would be able to restore back to an infected restore point which would be better than having nothing to restore back to.
Kapersky entry: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{4AA1BD37-FFAB-4770-A4A3-2C6BF615AE71}\RP721\A0051665.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.SdBot.aad skipped Let's try once more to remove this Viewpoint object. Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look. Also please let me know how your computer is running now.

Good work yustr! Glad the computer is running fine now!
Empty your recycle Bin now, and delete the HJT backups folder in a week or so when you're sure all is well and there's no way they are possibly needed. You can delete the SDFix tool. This step with get rid of that one infected file detected by Kapaersky. STEP 1. ====== System Restore for Windows XP Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
Turn ON System Restore.
STEP 2. ====== DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!! http://forum.malwareremoval.com/view...9eba6ea0b5e8ee Quote:
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Thank you for allowing me to assist you. Susan
