Hello LEB and welcome to TSF,

Thank you for your patience, and I see you took care of all those Logitech O18 entries.

You may want to copy these instructions to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as this page will not be viewable while performing the fix.

**************************************************

Please disable the following program(s) as they may interfere with the fixes below. You may re-enable them when we are through cleaning your system:

Ad-Aware Ad-Watch
  • Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
  • At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic"
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
  • Uncheck both of those boxes.

Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, Options.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe
  • Save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Click "Next", then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin: Please follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your compute: Please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load and this is normal.
Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

**If you receive an error message while trying to run FixWareout, copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, and run FixWareout again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only" , and place a check next to the following items (if found):

O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1

Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

C:\fixwareout\report.txt
New HijackThis log

Hello Ried, thank you so much for your help!!
Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1 was not found this time so no action was taken.
As for the Fixwareout log, It doesn't look like much so I'm afraid I may have done something incorrectly. But then, I have no idea what it's supposed to look like.
I did get rid of all those Logitech entries. I'm not sure what that was all about. I, hopefully, have nothing left associated with that webcam left on my machine. Here are the two logs. Thanks again Ried.

Hi LEB,

You ran the tool just fine. Has Windows Defender been blocking or fixing anything?

We'll run a few tools and see if additional malware is revealed.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

******************************************************

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. (Not Recommended for XP64).

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! or move them to a permanent location.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the "Temporary Files" and uncheck the box for "Scan drives for file matching" if it's checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT reboot/logoff when prompted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
**AVG Anti-Spyware is compatible with most AV and anti-spyware products, and the free version will continue to be useful as a second anti-malware scanner.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot into Normal Mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new scan with HijackThis and save the log.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please include the following in your next reply:

AVG Anti-Spyware results
Panda results
New HijackThis log

Hey Ried.

I have not begun any of the steps you recommended. The panda virus scan requires IE, which is an issue for me. I have not been able to install IE for some time now. I uninstalled it before and now it won't reinstall. When I try it tells me the installation failed and needs to restart my machine to remove what was installed(or something to that effect). When I restart, I have a link to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925 on my desktop. I've tried working through the methods but the way some of it is worded leaves me unsure of what to do. I have a feeling if I mess up, my headache will take a turn for the worse. :/

Can you advise me on how to handle this?

P.S. I've tried the installation with both ZA and Adwatch disabled.

Thanks again Ried.

Hi,

Your problem with downloading IE could have been due to infections that may be/were on your system at the time of download. Let's do a scan and see if anything is lurking about. If you still have an issue downloading/repairing IE, I'm confident the folks in the Windows XP section will be able to help you sort that out.

We can use Firefox for an online scan--I'd like you to install the IE Tab add on for Firefox. We can use that Tab to perform an online scan.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/

Further instructions about how to use it can be found here.

Once you've gotten the IE tab installed in Firefox, activate that Tab and run an online scan at Panda.

Hey Ried.

No, Windows Defender has been completely useless. Spybot S&D and Ad-aware have been somewhat effective, from what I can tell anyhow.

I am currently seeking help for my IE issue in the XP section. Gracias.

Panda came up clean.

Oh, and thanks for the heads up on the IE tab. :)

Hi,

Good luck with the IE install.

Your logs are clean. To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

Download SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.

Download Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

Download IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
  • Now navigate to C:\ie-spyad. Double click to open it.
  • From within the folder, double-click install.bat
  • Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
  • Then return to the main menu.
  • Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER
Understanding and Using Firewalls

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
