Lost System Restore Tool

Somehow my PC was infected with svchost.exe. Norton Antivirus caught it and deleted it. But now when I turn my PC on, I got bunch of messages saying could not find svchost.exe. I tried to do System Restore but got a message that the System Restore has been tunred off by Group policy.

I tried to turn on System Restore by click Start, right click My Computer, click Properties but there was no System Store Tab. Where did I do wrong?

How can I get my System Restore back?

Here is my HJT log.

Many thanks.

Please help me.

My pc was infected with scvhost.exe. And somehow there is no System Restore tab in My computer Properties anymore.

I tried regedit to bring back my System Restore, but I got a message saying that I could not do the regedit function because the Registry editing has been disabled by my admin.

How can I get my PC back?

What do I have to do?

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download the Suspicious file Packer from Safer-Networking.Org and unzip it to your desktop.

Run SFP.exe.

Please copy the following lines into the Step 1: Paste Text window:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe

then click "Continue".

This will create a .cab file on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab

Next, please visit TheSpyKillers forum HERE

Read the first topic for instructions on uploading files then start a new Topic, title the thread Files for AndyManchesta, post a link to this thread and upload the requested files.cab archive from your desktop.

Once you have done that, please save the link to that thread and post it in your next reply.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, to the fix....

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Generic Host Process] C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe
O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I followed your instruction to the section "Open the extracted SDFix folder..." When I double click RunThis.bat, I got a message saying "This command was forbidden by the admin. Press any keys to exit."

What's next?

Again, thanks for your help very much.

Please continue with your help. I may have to go through the whole thing again. I did save the SDFix at c:\

I doubled check the results as I followed your instruction. I don't know where I did wrong.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

then goto Start > Run > and copy and paste

regedit.exe "%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg"

Press Ok and allow it to be merged.

Then double click the RunThis.bat again in SDFix folder.

Let me know.

Should I type this entire line to the slot, including the "?

Oh, is this what you want me to type:

regedit.exe "c:\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg"

Is this what you want me to do? Just copy the file out of SDFix and paste it onto the command line in Run?

Please!

Thanks.

HoangCXXXX -

First, please relax. Also realize I'll not ignore this thread, but as I also have a Real Life, I'm not here to answer immediately.

These instructions seem self-evident. Please slow down and read them again.

Quote:
then go to Start > Run > and copy and paste

regedit.exe "%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg"

Press Ok and allow it to be merged.
To this, you need to click on Windows Start Button, then click on Run. Then simply copy and then paste the above instruction in RED into that Run box which has opened.

Click on OK, and then allow the file to be merged into the registry when asked.

Dear God/Mom/Dad

Halleluia! I found my System Restore tab! You are awesome! Forgive me because I forgot that you are human, too. I thought you were God.

Without you and people like you, I doubt that we would have the internet as we do today.

MANY MANY THANKS.

Please review and let me know if I need to do anything else.

Good job! The real thanks go to AndyManchesta for his tool.

That was round one, to regain control of your system.

Now, please perform this general system scan and cleaning to see if anything else is lurking. This will take a bit more time, but should be performed to help us ensure we got it all.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, if it does please do so.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Download combofix.exe to your desktop.
  2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please return with logs from:

AVG Anti-Spyware
Panda
C:\ComboFix.txt

I will follow through and report back. My son told me this morning that he could not do Ctrl Alt Del. He got a message saying the function was disabled by the admin.

Thank you again for your thorough help.

Hello,

I did not follow your instruction step by step. I ran CleanUp in the demo mode and it supposes to have removed over 14GB.

I don't really know what to backup. Should I go ahead and run it real?

I guess I'm novous at pc so I'm afraid to take any bold step and I just want to hear the word of encouragement from you.

Thanks.

Most times, that statement refers to developers who intentionally create temp files.

If you are not such a user, and have never cleaned you temp files, it's quite possible there is that much junk to clean up.

Conversely, you can also use this tool to aid in the removal of temp files:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

You're welcome.

Please also tell me whether this is still true:

My PC locked up and I had to redo the Panda ActiveScan. I could do the Ctrl Alt Del to summon the Task Manager, but did not have time to have my son tried that yet. However, the PC was running very slowly and I will now try to do the Panda AS again. It got to the end, but I could not save the report.

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

The most important tool I want you to run right now is combofix...please run that and post whatever logs you have. AVG Anti-Spyware, Panda if there is one, C:\ComboFix.txt, new HijackThis log.

Due to the nature of the infection you have had, it's important to be timely in replies.

I was able to run everything you instructed. My son still got the message saying could not find scvhost.exe when he logs on and still could not do the Ctrl Alt Del to access Task Manager.

Here are all the logs.

Again, thank you for your help. You may as well be a God. You don't seem to have a need for eat and sleep
