Lost System Restore Tool
Somehow my PC was infected with svchost.exe. Norton Antivirus caught it and deleted it. But now when I turn my PC on, I got bunch of messages saying could not find svchost.exe. I tried to do System Restore but got a message that the System Restore has been tunred off by Group policy.
I tried to turn on System Restore by click Start, right click My Computer, click Properties but there was no System Store Tab. Where did I do wrong? How can I get my System Restore back? Here is my HJT log. Many thanks. ======================================= Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 8:14:47 PM, on 1/16/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Michael Rezayazdi.YOUR-XB2X7J77GN\Desktop\Neverwinter\A 120\Alcohol 120\StarWind\StarWindService.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe C:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\hphmon05.exe C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE C:\WINDOWS\LTMSG.exe C:\Program Files\Multimedia Card Reader\shwicon2k.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb08.exe C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\browser\ybrwicon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\YOP\yop.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\browser\ycommon.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.908.5008\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\MESSEN~1\ymsgr_tray.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\Program Files\Sony Corporation\Picture Package\Picture Package Menu\SonyTray.exe C:\Program Files\Sony Corporation\Picture Package\Picture Package Applications\Residence.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Southwest Airlines\Ding\Ding.exe C:\Program Files\interMute\SpamSubtract\SpamSub.exe C:\Program Files\SBC Self Support Tool\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Console\NSCSRVCE.EXE C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Michael Rezayazdi.YOUR-XB2X7J77GN\Desktop\Neverwinter\WinRar\WinRAR.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX02.500\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qus10.hpwis.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/ R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://att.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://att.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://yahoo.sbc.com/dsl R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Please help me.
My pc was infected with scvhost.exe. And somehow there is no System Restore tab in My computer Properties anymore. I tried regedit to bring back my System Restore, but I got a message saying that I could not do the regedit function because the Registry editing has been disabled by my admin. How can I get my PC back? What do I have to do? Last edited by HoangCXXXX; 01-16-2007 at 08:54 PM. |

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.
Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please download the Suspicious file Packer from Safer-Networking.Org and unzip it to your desktop. Run SFP.exe. Please copy the following lines into the Step 1: Paste Text window: C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe then click "Continue". This will create a .cab file on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab Next, please visit TheSpyKillers forum HERE Read the first topic for instructions on uploading files then start a new Topic, title the thread Files for AndyManchesta, post a link to this thread and upload the requested files.cab archive from your desktop. Once you have done that, please save the link to that thread and post it in your next reply. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, to the fix.... Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop. Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix) Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E14DCE67-8FB7-4721-8149-179BAA4D792C} - (no file) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Generic Host Process] C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Generic Host Process] C:\WINDOWS\System32\scvhost.exe O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1 Close HijackThis now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I followed your instruction to the section "Open the extracted SDFix folder..." When I double click RunThis.bat, I got a message saying "This command was forbidden by the admin. Press any keys to exit." What's next? Again, thanks for your help very much. |

Please continue with your help. I may have to go through the whole thing again. I did save the SDFix at c:\
I doubled check the results as I followed your instruction. I don't know where I did wrong. |

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1 Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- then goto Start > Run > and copy and paste regedit.exe "%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg" Press Ok and allow it to be merged. Then double click the RunThis.bat again in SDFix folder. Let me know.

HoangCXXXX -
First, please relax. Also realize I'll not ignore this thread, but as I also have a Real Life, I'm not here to answer immediately. These instructions seem self-evident. Please slow down and read them again. Quote:
Click on OK, and then allow the file to be merged into the registry when asked.

Good job! The real thanks go to AndyManchesta for his tool.
That was round one, to regain control of your system. Now, please perform this general system scan and cleaning to see if anything else is lurking. This will take a bit more time, but should be performed to help us ensure we got it all. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download AVG Anti Spyware Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows" ![]()
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download and install CleanUp! NOTE: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: Click "Options..." Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, if it does please do so. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
Restart in normal mode. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
![]()
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please return with logs from: AVG Anti-Spyware Panda C:\ComboFix.txt HJT

I will follow through and report back. My son told me this morning that he could not do Ctrl Alt Del. He got a message saying the function was disabled by the admin.
Thank you again for your thorough help. |

Hello,
I did not follow your instruction step by step. I ran CleanUp in the demo mode and it supposes to have removed over 14GB.I don't really know what to backup. Should I go ahead and run it real? I guess I'm novous at pc so I'm afraid to take any bold step and I just want to hear the word of encouragement from you. Thanks. |

Most times, that statement refers to developers who intentionally create temp files.
If you are not such a user, and have never cleaned you temp files, it's quite possible there is that much junk to clean up. Conversely, you can also use this tool to aid in the removal of temp files: Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

You're welcome.
Please also tell me whether this is still true: Quote:

My PC locked up and I had to redo the Panda ActiveScan. I could do the Ctrl Alt Del to summon the Task Manager, but did not have time to have my son tried that yet. However, the PC was running very slowly and I will now try to do the Panda AS again. It got to the end, but I could not save the report.
Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. Last edited by HoangCXXXX; 01-21-2007 at 08:29 AM. |

The most important tool I want you to run right now is combofix...please run that and post whatever logs you have. AVG Anti-Spyware, Panda if there is one, C:\ComboFix.txt, new HijackThis log.
Due to the nature of the infection you have had, it's important to be timely in replies.

I was able to run everything you instructed. My son still got the message saying could not find scvhost.exe when he logs on and still could not do the Ctrl Alt Del to access Task Manager.
Here are all the logs. Again, thank you for your help. You may as well be a God.
