Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download HijackThis to your desktop - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

I see you have more than one Anti-Virus program installed, PC Tools AntiVirus and AVG. While this may seem like greater protection, it can cause problems including slowdowns and system hangs. Choose one to keep and uninstall the other.

Any antivirus program must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:
re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE

Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter

* Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
* Click Apply

Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • At the top of the page you'll find a "Browse" button. Click the "Browse" button and browse to this file in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\iisctrl.exe

  • Click "Open".
  • Then click the "Send" button at the top of the VirusTotal page.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you still receiving messages about rdriv.sys?

VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

Please download the Suspicious file Packer from Safer-Networking.Org and unzip it to your desktop.

Run SFP.exe.

Please copy the following lines into the Step 1: Paste Text window:

C:\WINDOWS\iisctrl.exe

then click "Continue".

This will create a .cab file on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab

Next, please visit TheSpyKillers forum HERE

Read the first topic for instructions on uploading files then start a new Topic, post a link to this thread and upload the requested files.cab archive from your desktop.

Please post the link to your spykiller thread here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip the exe file to your desktop

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O23 - Service: NetconDDE Service (NetconDDE) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\iisctrl.exe

Close HijackThis now.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Launch KillBox.exe & select the following options:
  • delete on Reboot
  • All files (if available)
Use your mouse to select all the filenames highlighted in blue & then right-click & select Copy
  • C:\WINDOWS\iisctrl.exe
* Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard
* Click the RED X button.
* KillBox will alert you the files will be deleted on next reboot, click Yes
* When asked to Reboot, select Yes

Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, and let us know if you receive this message.

Also, if the computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum in your next reply.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please return with results from:

SDFix
kaspersky online scan

Delete the contents of this folder, but not the folder itself:

C:\Documents and Settings\todd smallcombe\.housecall6.6\Quarantine

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Launch KillBox.exe & select the following options:
  • delete on Reboot
  • All files (if available)
Use your mouse to select all the filenames highlighted in blue & then right-click & select Copy
  • C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\cssweb.dll
* Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard
* Click the RED X button.
* KillBox will alert you the files will be deleted on next reboot, click Yes
* When asked to Reboot, select Yes

Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, and let us know if you receive this message.

Also, if the computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This part is important, as you have rootkit in your System Restore points. They need to be flushed out, and then you need to create a new one again.

CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE

Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter

* Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
* Click Apply

Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before we press on, I'd like to know the condition of your system.

Are you still being notified about rdriv.sys? Are you still getting access violation error?

Hi todd1964 -

Can you do one more thing for me please?

It appears as though the log from SDFix is incomplete. Can you please open the C:\SDFix folder and copy and paste the full report.txt contained within?

Hi todd1964 -

Looks like SDFix did the job on rdriv.

System Restore XP doesn't generally require a reboot while flushing old points and setting a new point, but I think we should do that, as PC Tools seems to be hanging on to them.

Go through the process of turning off System Restore again, then reboot the system before turning System Restore back on.

If that doesn't take care of the notifications.....

You might also need to clear PC Tools AV identifications history. As I'm unfamiliar with this AV product, I'm not sure exactly how to advise you to do that.

Looks like it might be in the "View Results List", or "Click to Reset Statistics"

In my ActiveVirusShield, there's a Threats screen, and I can then tell the program to discard all the IDd threats, including the ones which have been dealt with already, so it won't hang on to them and remind me about the work it's already done.

There should be something similar in PC Tools AV.

Let me know how that goes.

I'll have to look deeper into the access violation.

Hi todd1964 -

Glad to hear things are better, however....

There's still a bit more work to do. I was simply trying to eliminate one issue at a time.

So, the System Restore is cleared successfully, and PC Tools AV no longer alerts you to a Restore Point infection, correct?

We still need to do this:

Go to Start>Run and copy/paste the following:

sc stop NetconDDE

then press Enter.

Go to Start>Run and copy/paste the following:

sc delete NetconDDE

then press Enter.

Restart your system.

Please run this online scan, to look for any remnants of infection:

Once I'm sure all is well, I'll have some final housekeeping and protection instructions for you.

For some reason, your System Restore points are not being cleared out. It's critical that we do get these cleaned out, as any restore to the points in question may well result in reinfection.

Windows Defender

Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools>Options.
  • Scroll down and uncheck "Use real-time protection (recommended)".
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat. Please save it on your desktop.

Quote:
@echo off
sc stop NetconDDE
sc delete NetconDDE
exit
Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delete these files/folders:

C:\!KillBox
C:\Documents and Settings\todd smallcombe\Desktop\New Folder\requested-files[2006-12-13_09_11].cab

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE

Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter

* Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
* Click Apply

Restart your system.

Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I see you have AVG Anti-Spyware already. Please update it's definitions, and run a scan where I have placed it in this fix.

Run AVG Anti-Spyware
  • From the main screen, click on update, then click the Start
    update
    button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update
    successful")
  • select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware. DO NOT scan yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Post a new HJT log, and the results from the AVG Anti-Spyware scan.

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

Anti-Spyware Tutorial

If you do not have a firewall, here are a few free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
