Oh and is there anything on that list that you think is unnecessary and that I should uninstall?

Hello Chow,

Your list of programs is fine with the following exceptions noted:

Your version of Spybot is outdated--it is now 1.4

Your version of Java is also outdated.

--------------------------------------

Download Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4

Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available.
  • Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'.
  • Click on Immunize to your left.
  • Next, click the Immunize button on top to Immunize your computer - you need to do this each time there is an update.
  • Click 'Check for Problems' and fix all the entries, which are indicated in RED.

------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_10-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

------------------------------

As for the issue with downloading SP2, you would be better served letting the experts in Windows XP help you with that. Please begin a new thread in the Windows XP section of this forum, and do let them know you've been cleared from the HijackThis section.

Hi,

So when I tried installing Java, a windows installer window appeared and then after, another window popped up saying, "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

And I was in normal mode.

Is this also something I should bring to the XP board?

Hello Chow,

You can try the steps outlined at Microsoft for repairing the Windows Installer http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319624

If you are still having difficulty, then yes--Windows XP section should be able to help you out.

Again, thank you very much for all the help Ried. Now it looks like the only problems on my computer are relating to Windows XP.

So... Guess this is goodbye... then again we really haven't officially met...

Good luck helping other people out, you really make a difference and save people from a lot of frustration.
