Having a problem, possibly malware in winlogon.exe
Yesterday, I booted my laptop in safe mode and ran a full system scan with AVG, Spyware Doctor, and AdAware. AVG didn't find anything, Spyware and AdAware found a few things, but nothing really out of the ordinary.
Anyway, I boot up in normal mode, log in, and everything is loading and running extremely slowly and there's no sound. When I get the opportunity, I open the task manager and see that winlogon.exe is using 100% of my CPU. I went back into safe mode and performed a system restore back to last Tuesday, it worked for about an hour, and now I'm back to the same problem with winlogon.exe taking up all my CPU resources. Here's the situation: I have my system recovery disks, and I can still boot in safe mode just fine. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, I'd like to avoid formatting and reinstalling from the recovery disks if at all possible. Thanks very much for your help. Hello phrozenwind, welcome to TSF and thanks for your patience. You may wish to Subscribe to this thread so that you are notified when you receive a reply. To do this click Thread Tools (above the first post), then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes. Please do these steps in order and do not skip any. Unhide Files Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders". Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside "Hide file extensions for known file types". Click OK. Reboot Reboot your system to Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears and choosing Safe Mode from the list. On some systems, this may be the F5 key so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on with your usual account. Make sure to close any open windows. Uninstall Click Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if they exist): Viewpoint ToolbarPlease let me know if any of these were unable to uninstall. HijackThis Fixes Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they still exist (make sure you do not miss any): O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBarBHO.dllPlease remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. Close HijackThis. Deletions Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist. C:\Program Files\ViewpointTry booting into Normal mode again. If you can, we'll start scanning your system for other malware that may be lurking about. Post a new HijackThis log for me (in Normal mode if you can) when you've done all these steps.

(Note: I'm currently posting from my girlfriend's laptop, here in the same room as mine.)
I've successfully booted into Normal Mode, I ran Hijack This again and as I got online (from my laptop) to post the log here, errorsafe.com hijacked my browser and tried to scan my registry for inconsistencies. I followed your steps perfectly, when it came time to delete those files at the end, NITEAIM.EXE and aolserviceshosts.exe didn't show up at the specified locations or after a search, so I assumed the work done in Hijack This took care of it. I deleted the Viewpoint folder myself. Anyway, I'm sitting in Normal Mode right now, I'm online, and I'm trying to bring up my task manager but something is taking up my CPU so badly that I can't get it to open. (EDIT: It finally opened and Internet Explorer is using all my resources.) Thank you very much for your help thus far, friend. Last edited by phrozenwind; 12-02-2006 at 04:30 PM. |

Do you have a way to copy tools from your girlfriend's laptop to yours, such as a thumbdrive? If not, can you boot into safe mode w/networking without your system freezing up? There is probably some other stuff that is hidden and we'll need to get some other tools on your system to find out what's really going on.

Multiple Antivirus
I see you have two or more antivirus programs installed (Virusscan, AVG Free). Multiple antivirus programs can bog down your system, interfere with each other, and may even cause crashes. I highly recommend you remove all but one of them using the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Download ComboFix Please download ComboFix and save it to your Desktop. Close all windows and then double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. While ComboFix is running, please do not click or move the window, as this may cause the tool to stall. When the tool has finished, it will produce a log for you and save it as C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply. Online Scan Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan.
With Your Next Post... Please paste the following with your next reply (in this order please):

I think because we're running in safe mode, ComboFix needs a little help.
Highlight and copy the following: "C:\sUBs\combofix.cmd"Then go to Start > Run, paste it into the text field, and then click OK. ComboFix should start up again, and should produce another log in C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log for me. Is normal mode still sluggish? I'm curious if uninstalling one of the antivirus programs was the solution.

Okay, still not seeing anything. Let's try couple more tools. While we're at it, let's try another online scanner. Panda didn't pick up anything except cookies, so I'm expecting the same from this.
Clear Cookies Clear your IE cookies. Start>Settings>Control Panel>Internet Options>General. Under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Cookies. Then click Delete Files. Download SilentRunners Please download SilentRunners.vbs - Right click & choose Save As... SilentRunners.vbs Before proceeding, disable any anti-virus or anti-spyware programs that may block/disable scripts. Launch SilentRunners by double-clicking the downloaded file. In the ensuing Window, select 'No' to avoid skipping supplementary searches. Please be patient as the script requires a few minutes to complete. When it's done, you'll receive the prompt "All Done!". It will create a file called "Startup Programs". Post ALL its contents here in your next reply. Download Autoruns
Online Scan Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Kaspersky WebScanner. Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
With Your Next Post... Please paste the following with your next reply (in this order please):

I'm just not seeing anything in there, and all your scans are coming up clean. At this point, I don't think whatever is going on is malware related. The two that we found weren't all that malcious and we took care of them without a fight. I don't think I can help any further; I recommend you start a thread in our XP support forum describing your problem. Let them know you've been checked out by us and declared malware free.
Well done, your logs are clean! Any more issues? If not, you should be good to go but we still have a few items we'd like to address. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Reset System Restore
Re-enable Protection Turn back on any malware prevention tools we might have had you switch off. Microsoft Updates It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by malware. Using Internet Explorer, please go to Microsoft's Windows Update and download all of the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. Please ensure that you have already patched your system against these recent critical exploits: Enable Windows Auto Update:
Update Java You need to update your Java as it is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Tool Deletions Feel free to remove these tools and their folders:
Malware Prevention This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. You might want to read Tony Klein's "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?". At the minimum, you need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard to prevent spyware intrusions. I also recommend IE-Spyad, which places over 4,000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, thus helping prevent attempts to re-infect your system. All of these have no-strings-attached free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use but often have malware in them. Two more articles you may want to read at your leisure are "KRC Anti-Spyware Tutorial" and "Making Internet Explorer Safer". The following is a list of free software we recommend: Realtime Malware Prevention Tools These programs actively watch your computer for possible malware-related changes and help prevent them. You can run more than one of these at a time.Passive Malware Prevention Tools These programs configure your computer to prevent known malware-related changes. You can have more than one of these at a time and they take up minimal resources.
Using an alternative browser can help prevent malware from being installed without your knowledge, but may not work on all websites.Alternative Miscellaneous Here are some alternatives that are worth looking into if you use their features:
Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
