Hijack This Log very important please help ASAP

I deleted an object in Ewido of high threat ( virus, trojan or worm). Now when I go to a website I can open the first page but when I try to go indepth into the website it says page cannot be displayed. This happens with every single website I try to visit, and the computer is running really slowly. For past half hour I could not connect to the internet, but after restarting it I can finally post this log. Please help ASAP. Thanks for help in advance.

Hello and welcome to TSF .

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

You may like to subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools located near the top of this page, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant email Notification, then click Subscribe.

Your log is apparently not showing anything. So let us try the following steps to ensure that nothing is hiding in your system.
________________________________________________

You mentioned about a removal done by Ewido. Could you recall the name of the threat that was deleted or post the report if you have saved it? If there is a report, it can be found in C:\Program Files\Ewido\.
______________________________________________________________

Downloads

1. Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later. Do not install if you are using the 64 bit version of windows. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

2. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • Launch Ewido.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
  • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
  • Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

3. Download combofix from this location: **Save it to your desktop**
Do Not run a scan just yet.
________________________________________________

Disable Security Softwares

Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido.
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
_____________________________________________________________

Show Hidden Files and Folders

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.
________________________________________________________________________________

Fix

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

R3 - URLSearchHook: &Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/chzl/def...loader_v10.cab

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

_____________________________________________________________

Cleanup!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Do not logoff or reboot when prompted.

Ewido

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.
_______________________________________________________________

Online Scan

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

__________________________________________________________

ComboFix

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

______________________________________________________

Uninstall List

Please get an Uninstall List from HijackThis in the following manner:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
____________________________________________________________

Please provide the following logs with your next post:

Combofix.txt
Ewido [the latest one, and the old one (if possible)]
Panda Scan
Uninstall List
HijackThis (A fresh one)

Please let me know about your systems overall behavior .

I see you have Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 installed. Ewido has recently been purchased by Grisoft, makers of AVG Antivirus, and the program is now known as AVG Anti-Spyware. It is essentially the same program with a new paintjob; Ewido currently can still be updated to the newest definitions, but this support will likely not last forever. I recommend you uninstall Ewido 4.0, restart your system, then download and install AVG Anti-Spyware. Update it's definitions as directed below, and run a scan at regular intervals to keep your computer clean.

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 - http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_10-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

MICROSOFT UPDATES

It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

You can alsoautomate this process to save yourself from visiting Microsoft Update Site at regular intervals. To do that Enable Windows Auto Update in the following way
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

SPYWARE PREVENTION SPEECH

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?
THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER
Understanding and Using Firewalls

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • Spyware Blaster - to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items .
  • Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IE-Spyad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, and save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
Now navigate to C:\ie-spyad. Double click to open it. From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4
  • MVPS Hosts file - From within Host.zip, double click on MVPS.bat & allow it to run. This will replace your current Hosts file with one that will block known adware and spy websites

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

FIREWALLS

I suggest that you use a Third Party Firewall to protect your computer better. Using a firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:
FIREFOX

I suggest strongly that you use an alternate browser-Mozilla's Firefox; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker. Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Two more good browsers are Opera and Avant. You can download Opera Web Browser from here and Avant can be downloaded from here. Avant is a browser based on IE engine, but with much more security integrated, like blocking Flash animations etc. It is also very lite on system resources. So those sites which require IE to operate, Avant can be the best and secured replacement.

Protective Programs
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download, Install and update Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. During installation choose to enable the Teatimer option as this will give you real time protection against any registry changes.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Download, Install and update Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Update all these programs along with your AntiVirus regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
  • Run scans with your AntiVirus and other protective programs that I have listed here, at regular intervals and neutralise the threats that these softwares list.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Happy Surfing .

Hi hes4l,

1. If you have not installed ie_spayed earlier, please double click on Install.bat file and proceed to the installation step directly by typing 2.

2. If you have run the MVPS.bat, the host file is installed automatically. You may not see any prompt telling you, but it is installed.

If you have any more doubts, please let me know, I'll try to help you out .

Hello SRC2206,

For IE-Spyad

The C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe screen keeps moving rapidly up and down and it does not let me write the NO. 2 for process 2. Thanks again for the help.

Hello hes4l,
Let us try windows file protection.

Click Start>Run and type in sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /) and let it scan for missing/corrupt files. This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. If it finds any problems, it will prompt you for the Windows XP Install disc so have it handy.

If this does not solve your problem I suggest that you start a thread in our Windows XP Support Forum. Please mention there that you have been cleared by HijackThis Log Help forum and you can also add a link to this thread for their reference.

Hope this helps you.
