Norton AV2005 and Act 6! uninstall problem

Hello all. I want to delete Norton AV2005 but run into a problem. The uninstall says I must delete Act 6! but when I try to, I get the error message "uninst6.isu is not valid or the data path has been corrupted." I reinstalled Act but I still get the message. Please help. I don't use Act any more and I need to uninstall Norton to get that to work. In the meantime, my computer isn't protected. Thanks very much for your help. Patrick

Hello Patrick and welcome to TSF,

A HijackThis log would be helpful--it will help me see what is currently running on your system.

Please download HijackThis 1.99.1

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here.

**Do not fix anything in HijackThis as many entries are harmless and necessary for the proper operation of your system.

------------------------

I'd also like to see the following:

Create an Uninstall List:
Open HijackThis
*Click on the "Configure" button on the bottom right
*Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
*Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
*Click on the button "Save list"
The list will automatically be saved in your HijackThis folder.

Please copy and paste the uninstall_list.txt here.

Hi Patrick,

I'll need another report--what I'm looking for is an SQL service that may yet be invoked by Act 6 even though it has been uninstalled.

Go to HijackThis> Config> Misc Tools
  • Checkmark/tick 'list also minor sections (full)'
  • Click the 'Generate StartupList log' button
  • Post the log in your next reply

Norton is fully running on your system right now, so no worries about your system being unprotected.

Hi Patrick,

Using 'My Computer', navigate to and delete the ACT! folder--it should be located here:

C:\Program Files\ ACT!

See if there is another one located in this path and delete it as well:

C:\Program Files\Symantec\ ACT

-------------------------

Try uninstalling Norton again. Please let me know how that went.

retry

I tried running the Norton removal tool again with no success. The Message is to uninstall act. I did delete the files as you told me to, and restarted the computer.

Before we try to force Norton out of there, I want to be clear on what your needs are.
  1. Are you planning on installing a different Anti Virus?
  2. Are you going to reinstall ACT!?

I am not going to reinstall act and I am planning on using another antivirus program, either AVG or Mcafee (any suggestions?)

Either one is a good choice.

Let's see if we can get rid of Norton this way:

Here is a guide for uninstalling Norton, including uninstallers. Be sure to use the uninstaller for the version of Norton/Symantec that is active on your system. http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm

Please let me know if you were successful.

Glad I could help. I do have a couple more items to address.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs)

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06

All these older versions are no longer needed and are just taking up space.

Keep your most recent version: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8

-----------------------------

Also, your Spybot is outdated--it is now at version 1.4:

Download Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4 Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'. Next click on Immunize to your left. Click the Immunize button on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update. Click 'Check for Problems' and fix all the entries, which are indicated in RED.

-----------------------------

You'll find this article an interesting read and it will only take a few moments.
