Administrator Rights Lost or Trojan Backdoor itoa
I have a Desktop WinXP and when I upgraded Real and attempted to download the new version I get a message after 77% installation saying "you currently do not have Administrator access to the Windows registry. Please see your System Administrator to install RealPlayer." I am running under admin user and never encountered this problem before. I also tried downloading in safe mode under the admin user setup in safe mode. I am able to download and ran registry cleaner, and spysweeper scan and I have hijackthis 1.99, I have adaware se, norton security, win xp updates. I created a new admin rights user and also marked guest inactive. I tried disk cleanup from IE, and also restarted several times in between doing all of these actions and still received the message that I do not have admin rights. Also I searched real's site and they Spysweeper was the last effort I tried and it found 1 problem called Trojan-backdoor-itoa which may be related my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated and as a newbie to the site I will look over the beginners section to see if I need to cover any steps that I may be missing.

Hi and welcome to the TSF Security Forum.
My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system. There’s not much showing in your log so we’ll do some investigating. You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply. Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your system is clean. Please download combofix.exe to your desktop. IMPORTANT - You must place combofix on your desktop!! Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, the tool will produce a log for you at c:\combofix.txt. Post that log in your next reply. Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall. Online Scan Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Logs required combofix.txt Panda Log HijackThis Log Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems. In order to provide you with the best possible help, please ensure that HijackThis logs are produced only while in Normal Mode.

By then I was already running panda so I started combo after panda and when I did two combo boxes showed which I think happened by clicking the combo twice. The first window started the process but the next window said it could not perform and asked to click anywhere on the window. I did and that brought a momentary blue window while I still had my start bar and the other combo window was still performing. After that combo exe finished i saved the report and the screen was back at normal. After that I ran an HJT file successfully. About operating issues. I notice none before and right now but are you asking me to restart the computer and see if anything was better after doing the above steps? I had an issue about downloading permissions saying that I am not an administrator user and tried everything I could but I have not tried downloading Real after these steps. Thanks |

Hi again
Everything is clean – just one small Registry fix needed. Disable SpyBot Tea Timer While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things. Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
Registry Fix Click on the zip file attached to this post to open and extract the file fix.reg to your desktop. Double click on the file fix.reg to run it. Answer yes to any prompts and allow it to merge into the Registry. Re-enable SpyBot Tea Timer To reactivate TeaTimer:
I therefore believe this is a Windows problem. I would suggest you post in the XP forum and mention that you have been cleared by Security. They will be able to help you on this better than I can. Let’s tidy up here and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure. Some of these you will already have but there may be some that you don’t. System Restore To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This will create a new Restore Point. Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. Ad-aware Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. IE-SPYAD IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here. SnoopFree SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems. MVPS Hosts File The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file. Alternate Browsers Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Maxthon Firewalls A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: Sygate Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm Tiny Personal Firewall Anti Virus Software It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: Anti-Spyware Tutorial Here are three very good free Antivirus products which are available: BitDefender Free Avast! AVG It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Other Protection Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer. In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles PC Safety & Security - What Do I Need?. Making Internet Explorer Safer. Keep clean and safe and enjoy your computing! Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Followed security instructions
Thanks for your help and I followed what you wrote regarding restore point, registry fix, downloaded spyguard, spyblaster, snoopfree, and I have to add mvps host file. I already have adaware, spybot, firewall, antivirus, firefox. Thanks for your help in recommending to post in Security for the issue about security rights since I still get a message about not have admin rights when I download Real Player.
Thanks, tsf2006 |
