programs would not open, desktop not working.
about a month ago my roomate went to log on, and got nothing. I tried to log on and it went to my desk top. Nothing would open or run. I would piont to a desktop sortcut, click and nothiing but the hour glass. The quick luanch, the start button, same as the desk top. So I reinstalled nortons ran liveupdate, restarted. Things worked, but not properly. So I jumped on google found this place. I followed the five steps. I spent a very long time on it. I ran every thing that was suggested. I ran it all twice, what I could run in safemode, I did. Than I did a full system scan with my antivirus program, ran updates on everything!!!!! Than I started over and did it all one more time. Things seem to be working fine. Thank you, to everyone that has been apart of helping me.

Hello Brain Stew and Welcome to the Tech Support Forum!
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix. Please download FixWareout from one of these sites: http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal. At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again. Disable TeaTimer: Please disable TeaTimer as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean. To disable TeaTimer:
Disable Microsoft Windows Defender: We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following: O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.68 85.255.112.118 O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{7EFC685D-D97C-44C9-83EC-BFDD9FBB009F}: NameServer = 85.255.115.68,85.255.112.118 O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.68 85.255.112.118 O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.68 85.255.112.118 Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis. Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt.

Your log appears to be clean. Let's run one more scan, please.
Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer: Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

Hi Brain Stew,
Your logs appear to be clean. Kapersky did not detect any infected _restore files however to be safe I would recommend that you do this step. If you have infected restore points then it is possible to do a system restore and revive an infection which is why I recommend it. System Restore for Windows XP Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
Turn ON System Restore.
STEP 1. ====== DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!! http://forum.malwareremoval.com/view...9eba6ea0b5e8ee Quote:
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Thank you for allowing me to assist you. Susan
