Problems with Internet Connection...

Hi all,

My internet connection keeps going off and the only way I can get it back is to restart the computer...every ten minutes or so.

I checked the broadband stuff...connections and stuff...and don't think its that. I have NTLworld Broadband Internet connected via USB rather than Ethernet.

I did a quick internet google search "My computer keeps losing the internet" and some things I saw said it could be a worm...I've not found anything but I haven't followed their instructions - I used yours - so I don't know if you can actually help me.

I also took off all the antivirus stuff and reloaded what you recommended.

I have Win XP SP2 because I disinfected the system last year through you, and then was told to install it when the system was clean.

Thanks

Helen
19Ellie

I've followed your procedures and have pasted the HJT stuff below.

Thanks

Hello and Welcome. All apologies for the delay.

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Not sure if this will solve your internet issues, but you do have some malware onboard.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [virtual-ie] winlogi.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [virtual-ie] winlogi.exe
O16 - DPF: {FF3F0F03-0F01-131A-A3F9-08F02B23E0CC} - http://207.226.177.98/dba2296.exe

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delete the following if they exist:

winlogi.exe<<<find via Start>Search>All files and folders

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please return with logs from:

AVG Anti-Spyware
Panda

Hi,

Thanks for your response. Sorry for my delay...I am now away during the week because of work.

I have the following logs:

AVG AntiSpyware:

---------------------------------------------------------
AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created at: 19:30:22 01/12/2006

+ Scan result:

Nothing found.

::Report end

Panda:

Note: I did the full scan and it came up with 2 problems...1 in Spyware and the other in Hacking tools and rootkits. When it had finished the internet had timed out, so I restarted and did the scan until the same two files had appeared, then saved the log. I hope this is ok. I couldn't get a log any other way.

Hi Ellie -

Let me gather a bit more information, please. Are you still experiencing the original issues?

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

Create an uninstall list:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the button " Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from the notepad file into your post

Download and run Blacklight

Note that you must have local administrative privileges to run the program.

Click Scan. BlackLight will use Windows Explorer (the desktop process) to scan for hidden items. Your anti-virus software or personal firewall might display a warning that says Blacklight (blbeta.exe) is trying to manipulate the Windows Explorer process (explorer.exe). If you want to continue the scan, you should allow BlackLight to do this

When it finishes, click Next. You may get a screen similar to the picture below. Click on Close

BlackLight beta would create a log file "fsbl-<date-and-time>.log". By default, the log file is in the same directory as the executable. Please post the log

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply.

Yes, the original problem is still there. If the computer is on for 30 minutes the internet goes off, even if you haven't used it. Then the computer has to be restarted. Then again, the internet is only available for about 30 minutes.

Here are the following logs you asked for:

SmitFraudFix

SmitFraudFix v2.126

Hi Ellie -

I don't see any malware in those logs.

The Panda find refers to an orphaned registry entry. It's an entry in your Registry that references a non existant file. It's perfectly harmless without the accompanying file. Panda detects it but does not pinpoint the location of the entry. If it had provided the location, we may have it removed via manual Registry editing. I do not recommend that you rummage through the Registry looking for this entry. We do not want to risk causing irrepairable damage to the Registry.

Let's run one more diagnostic tool before I send you over to the folks in Networking, as I believe this to be something more up their alley.
  1. Download combofix.exe to your desktop.
  2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HJT log
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

I can understand your frustration. Computers can be great tools, when they work as expected. And anchors dragging you down when they don't.

Let's do just a couple more things....to make sure we've gotten all the remnants of these infections and can rule that out.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Beside the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu by double clicking on it.
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a blue progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and do the BitDefender online virus scan.
  • Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Leave the scanning options at default and press "Click here to scan" to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished.
  • When the scan is finished, click on "Click here to export the scan results"
  • Save the report to your desktop then come back here and post it in your next reply along with a new Hijack This log

I'm thinking that your sporadic internet connection is either ISP or hardware related. Do you have an available ethernet port on the system, and does the issue occur still if you use that instead of USB? Do you use a router as well as a modem? Have you reset either or both of these since the issues began?

Hi again,

I did the steps in order. When I came to Bit Defender, it said there was no virus, but there was nothing to say 'export the scan results'.

I can run it again if you need it.

There is an ethernet port on the computer but my dad says I need an ethernet card to run it??? The modem I have is from UK NTL Broadband Internet and its USB connection. I restarted the modem before I first posted here. There is no router. I can do it again...all I did was unplug it, wait a while then plug it back in. Thats what it says on the modem itself to do. I made sure all the connections were in properly to.

I can ring NTL and ask them to look at it. I wanted to make sure it wasn't a virus first, but as I still have intermitten internet access I'm begining to think that it is a modem problem. But I'll wait 'til you say so before I ring!!

Thanks

Ellie

Hi Ellie -

If there's an ethernet port on the PC, it's more than likely attached to a card already, or integrated into the motherboard, but I can't tell from here. Many broadband modems have both USB and ethernet connections. To use the PC's ethernet port, you'd need an ethernet cable, and you'd need to follow the install instructions for that modem. It would be a good way to attempt to isolate the issue, if it's the USB connection on the PC or modem, the modem itself, or in the line.

At any rate, this would appear to be hardware or ISP related if you still are experiencing the issue, as you appear to be free from malware.

You might want to ask in our Networking forum. If you do, let them know you've been here in HJT, and been cleared of malware.

For some final housekeeping duties, and for your future reference, please take a look at the following information.

We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

If you do not have a firewall, here area couple of free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
