Problems with Internet Connection...
Hi all,
My internet connection keeps going off and the only way I can get it back is to restart the computer...every ten minutes or so. I checked the broadband stuff...connections and stuff...and don't think its that. I have NTLworld Broadband Internet connected via USB rather than Ethernet. I did a quick internet google search "My computer keeps losing the internet" and some things I saw said it could be a worm...I've not found anything but I haven't followed their instructions - I used yours - so I don't know if you can actually help me. I also took off all the antivirus stuff and reloaded what you recommended. I have Win XP SP2 because I disinfected the system last year through you, and then was told to install it when the system was clean. Thanks Helen 19Ellie I've followed your procedures and have pasted the HJT stuff below. Thanks 19ellie Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:28:52, on 21/11/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_S10IC2.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe F:\Daniel\SMARTBoard\SMARTBoardService.exe C:\WINDOWS\SnoopFreeUI.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.908.5008\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe C:\Program Files\Samsung\Digimax Viewer 2.0\STImgBrowser.exe C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\SnoopFreeSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntvdm.exe C:\Program Files\PCI Audio Applications\Bin\WDM\noSPDIF\Mixer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgbhp.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIndex.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopCrawl.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.google.co.uk/ O2 - BHO: SpywareGuard Download Protection - {4A368E80-174F-4872-96B5-0B27DDD11DB2} - C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\dlprotect.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EPSON Stylus C84 Series] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_S10IC2.EXE /P23 "EPSON Stylus C84 Series" /O6 "USB001" /M "Stylus C84" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C-Media Mixer] C:\Program Files\PCI Audio Applications\Bin\AudioRack.exe /MixerStartup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Photo Downloader] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zone Labs Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PinnacleDriverCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSDrvCheck.exe -CheckReg O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LaunchList] F:\Pinnacle DV\LaunchList.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCLEPCI] C:\PROGRA~1\Pinnacle\PPE\PPE.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [virtual-ie] winlogi.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Registry Toolkit] C:\Program Files\Registry Toolkit\RegToolkit.exe /scan O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SnoopFreeUI] SnoopFreeUI.exe O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [virtual-ie] winlogi.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Desktop Search] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe" /startup O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Boots Insert Detect] F:\Kens Files\Scouts\Images\Picture Suite\InsDetect.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.908.5008\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe O4 - Startup: Event Reminder.lnk = F:\printmaster gold\PMREMIND.EXE O4 - Startup: SpywareGuard.lnk = C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe O4 - Global Startup: Digimax Viewer 2.0.lnk = ? Hello and Welcome. All apologies for the delay.
Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. Not sure if this will solve your internet issues, but you do have some malware onboard. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download AVG Anti Spyware Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows" ![]()
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download and install CleanUp! NOTE: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [virtual-ie] winlogi.exe O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [virtual-ie] winlogi.exe O16 - DPF: {FF3F0F03-0F01-131A-A3F9-08F02B23E0CC} - http://207.226.177.98/dba2296.exe Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete the following if they exist: winlogi.exe<<<find via Start>Search>All files and folders --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: Click "Options..." Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT Reboot/logoff when prompted. * CleanUp! will not create any backups!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
Restart in normal mode. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
![]()
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please return with logs from: AVG Anti-Spyware Panda HJT

Hi,
Thanks for your response. Sorry for my delay...I am now away during the week because of work. I have the following logs: AVG AntiSpyware: --------------------------------------------------------- AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 19:30:22 01/12/2006 + Scan result: Nothing found. ::Report end Panda: Note: I did the full scan and it came up with 2 problems...1 in Spyware and the other in Hacking tools and rootkits. When it had finished the internet had timed out, so I restarted and did the scan until the same two files had appeared, then saved the log. I hope this is ok. I couldn't get a log any other way. Hi Ellie -
Let me gather a bit more information, please. Are you still experiencing the original issues? Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter" and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so! Create an uninstall list:
Download and run Blacklight Note that you must have local administrative privileges to run the program. Click Scan. BlackLight will use Windows Explorer (the desktop process) to scan for hidden items. Your anti-virus software or personal firewall might display a warning that says Blacklight (blbeta.exe) is trying to manipulate the Windows Explorer process (explorer.exe). If you want to continue the scan, you should allow BlackLight to do this When it finishes, click Next. You may get a screen similar to the picture below. Click on Close BlackLight beta would create a log file "fsbl-<date-and-time>.log". By default, the log file is in the same directory as the executable. Please post the log

Hi,
Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, the original problem is still there. If the computer is on for 30 minutes the internet goes off, even if you haven't used it. Then the computer has to be restarted. Then again, the internet is only available for about 30 minutes. Hi Ellie -
I don't see any malware in those logs. The Panda find refers to an orphaned registry entry. It's an entry in your Registry that references a non existant file. It's perfectly harmless without the accompanying file. Panda detects it but does not pinpoint the location of the entry. If it had provided the location, we may have it removed via manual Registry editing. I do not recommend that you rummage through the Registry looking for this entry. We do not want to risk causing irrepairable damage to the Registry. Let's run one more diagnostic tool before I send you over to the folks in Networking, as I believe this to be something more up their alley.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

I can understand your frustration. Computers can be great tools, when they work as expected. And anchors dragging you down when they don't.
Let's do just a couple more things....to make sure we've gotten all the remnants of these infections and can rule that out. Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU). Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go here and do the BitDefender online virus scan.
I'm thinking that your sporadic internet connection is either ISP or hardware related. Do you have an available ethernet port on the system, and does the issue occur still if you use that instead of USB? Do you use a router as well as a modem? Have you reset either or both of these since the issues began?

Hi again,
I did the steps in order. When I came to Bit Defender, it said there was no virus, but there was nothing to say 'export the scan results'. I can run it again if you need it. The modem I have is from UK NTL Broadband Internet and its USB connection. I restarted the modem before I first posted here. There is no router. I can do it again...all I did was unplug it, wait a while then plug it back in. Thats what it says on the modem itself to do. I made sure all the connections were in properly to. I can ring NTL and ask them to look at it. I wanted to make sure it wasn't a virus first, but as I still have intermitten internet access I'm begining to think that it is a modem problem. But I'll wait 'til you say so before I ring!! Thanks Ellie |

Hi Ellie -
If there's an ethernet port on the PC, it's more than likely attached to a card already, or integrated into the motherboard, but I can't tell from here. Many broadband modems have both USB and ethernet connections. To use the PC's ethernet port, you'd need an ethernet cable, and you'd need to follow the install instructions for that modem. It would be a good way to attempt to isolate the issue, if it's the USB connection on the PC or modem, the modem itself, or in the line. At any rate, this would appear to be hardware or ISP related if you still are experiencing the issue, as you appear to be free from malware. You might want to ask in our Networking forum. If you do, let them know you've been here in HJT, and been cleared of malware. For some final housekeeping duties, and for your future reference, please take a look at the following information. We still have a few items to address. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Create a new System Restore point
Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: If you do not have a firewall, here area couple of free ones available for personal use: In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
