Mistake Trouble Getting Rid of Dialer.Trojan in winkve32.dll - please help

Hi Guys,

I really appreciate the service you provide. I went through all the recommended steps before posting my hijack log below. I already had service pack 2 installed for XP, however, before I got infected with all these items.

My problem is norton always finds the Dialer.Trojan virus but can't delete it and my system loads phantom web pages all the time.

I also have a couple of other symptoms that I only noticed after I installed the recommended software before submitting the hijack log:

dialer.trojan (C:\WINDOWS\system32\winkve32.dll - can't delete)
trojan.dropper (C:\Documents and Settings\Jared S. Morgenstern\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\TGWMY91K\wlzip32[1].exe - access denied - so norton can't delete)
mshtml2.exe is attempting to access the internet?
gebxxut is trying to change the registry?

Here is my hijack log:

Hi...

Please download Combofix: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
and save to the desktop.

1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Notes:
* Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.
* Do not proceed with the rest of the fix if you fail to run combofix
* Disable script blocking if you have NAV installed so it will not interfere with the fix. Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100.

Have "Hijack This" fix all the following items in the list below by placing a check in the appropriate boxes.Confirm that you have only the listed ones checked, then press <Fix checked> and Close HJT.

I'd like you to rename HijackThis.exe to jjflex.exe.
  • Navigate to C:\hjt\HijackThis.exe
  • Right click on HijackThis.exe
  • Select 'Rename'
  • Type in jjflex.exe
  • Press Enter.

Please post a new log for review using this renamed executable.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start -> Run and then paste in this single line command & click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /v winkve32 gebya gebxxut vrrsjpdu

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {423AC463-05F6-0252-D6AF-03B599B5DFCB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ocnhpyev.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {46A4E9D9-B30E-452A-8157-DBBEC8573B03} - C:\Program Files\VSAdd-in\VSAdd-in.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {56843EA2-6312-4D25-49E5-0AD192198A28} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzrvwej.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F9CA5599-9B58-9EFF-2B05-C9896A0A339A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\edo.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • At the top of the page you'll find a "Browse" button. Click the "Browse" button and browse to this file in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvhap.dll

  • Click "Open".
  • Then click the "Send" button at the top of the VirusTotal page.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply, at the end of this fix.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG Anti-Spyware
You will need to update AVG Anti-Spyware to the latest definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Delete the following if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kidliwrc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnsapicc.exe

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.. Do NOT Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure why anything we've done would affect Norton...let's see about that later.

It appears from the time stamps that the HJT log was saved before the run of ComboFix? If so, these entries below may not be present. Let's proceed as if they are, and don't fret if they are not.

S& D Spybot's Tea Timer

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • See this link for a tutorial

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat by right-clicking on the link, and choosing Save As. Save it to your desktop, or somewhere you can find it easily.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delete these files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kidliwrc.exe<<<Did you have difficulty locating this file? It was to have been deleted during the last fix.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnsapicc.exe<<<Did you have difficulty locating this file? It was to have been deleted during the last fix.

C:\QooBox

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your system.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

Also post a new HJT log.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0) -

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once back in normal Windows:

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Please run ComboFix once again, and post it's log, located at C:\ComboFix.txt, along with C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Are you still getting that message from Norton?

Yeah I still get the Norton message, on every boot, and i've seen it once or twice randomly not on boot. Norton seems to be running fine after i click cancel a couple times on that popup (also finds no viruses when i do a scan).

Also, C\QooBox is back...

Here are the new logs:

Also, C\QooBox is back...
You deleted it, and then ran Combo, right?

It should be empty now. Is it?

Yea I deleted it an ran Combo and now it's empty. Just didn't know if it was weird that the folder was back - (i just realized now that it may be Combo's quarantine box and that is expected behavior).

Yep, that's as expected....as long as it's empty, and it should be from the looks of the last log, it's not a problem. You can delete it again anyway.

Your logs appear malware free at this point.

Now, about your Norton issue....I have no idea what would have caused that to happen. Norton has a document detailing what to do when that happens, so you're not alone. Check it out here.

If that doesn't help you, and since the version you have doesn't seem to support repair feature, you have a couple of choices. You can keep clicking the error box, and use the program, as it seems to function. You can uninstall and reinstall it, assuming you have valid media or installer file on hand still, or you can take this opportunity to remove it and use another Anti-Virus program. If you decide to go that route, I have several excellent choices, including free programs.

Let me know what you want to do.

Hey Thanks for all this. I'm fixed! I'd like to try some good replacement options (free if they are comprehensive, otherwise I'd be willing to pay)- Norton has let me down too many times in the past and I can't even get them to give me a download even though my subscription lasts for about 8 months...

Good news.

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

Anti-Spyware Tutorial

If you do not have a firewall, here area couple of free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Of the free AV products I listed, I find the Active Virus Shield to be the most comprehensive.

If you're not averse to spending money, check out NOD32.
