Slow running - HJT log

My computer has been running very slowly.

I have been through "the 5 steps".

When trying to upgrade to SP1a I am able to download the files OK (45 of them) but when I select "install" it fails with a message "Automatic Updates is currently installing...). However, AU isn't enabled and anyway, I've left it for over half an hour and nothing is happening.

Antivirus software was switched off during this time.

Despite not having been able to upgrade to SP1a, I have nevertheless run HJT and the log is as follows. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Please download, update and run the A2 (A squared) anti-trojan. Let it fix whatever it wants to.

Anti-virus
Also, run this pc through the...
Panda Online virus scanner
or
Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner

Let it delete whatever it finds.


Once its all clean I would go straight for SP2 not 1a

I have completed the above tasks but unfortunately my computer is still running very slowly.

As a novice, I don't know if the following information is relevant but I thought I would mention it anyway.

Windows Task Manager shows that CPU usage is about 10% - 15% and PF usage is about 350MB. This is when I'm not doing anything in particular although it shows 43 processes running.

My computer has 248MB RAM and runs Windows XP Home with SP1 (I will upgrade to SP2 when I have solved the current problem.)

Should I submit another HJT log? Could the problem be that I need more memory?

Any further advice would be much appreciated.

Please download the Killbox.

Run Killbox, left click and drag you mouse over the highlighted files below (including filepath) then right click and choose Copy (including filepath) with your mouse, rightclick and choose Copy. Insert your mouse pointer within the box entitled "Full Filepath of File to Delete", rightclick again and choose File > Paste from Clipboard. All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there). If each file exists, it will appear in blue under that window when you click on it. Click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on > "Delete on Reboot" and click on "All Files". Please do this even if this option is already checked. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, click "Yes". Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
(This is Ewido 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to AVG Anti-Spyware which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc

• Press "OK".
• Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
• When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
• In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
• From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
• Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.

9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.
Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.

• Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
• Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
• Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\

6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report and a new HJT log in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so may hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

AVG Anti-Spyware is free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version.

Thanks for these further ideas which I have now worked through.

Killbox didn't reboot the computer so I did this manually. I assume it has worked though.

I already have AVG antispyware 7.5 which runs on a regular basis. However, I ran it again in safe mode as instructed. "Nothing was found".

I've tried running Killbox again.

I copied "C:\WINDOWS\System32\NetConfs.exe" into the Select box.
Then I selected "delete on reboot"
Then I've tried both "Single File" option and "All Files" option
As before, the computer doesn't reboot but I got the following message:-

"Pending FileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process"

Ok..time to bring in the heavy mob...this one is top secret so i may have to kill you and destroy your computer after you use it....




Please download The Avenger to your Desktop and unzip it.

Copy all the text contained in the code box below ( including the words "files to delete" ) by highlighting it and right clicking and selecting "Copy"

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\NetConfs.exe

Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop. Look under "Script file to execute" and click on "Input Script Manually". Next click on the Magnifying Glass icon and a blank dialogue box will open called "View/Edit script". Position your mouse inside the box, rightclick and choose Paste. All the text above in the code box should now appear there. Click Done and click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script. Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will restart your computer. (if the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)

When you have rebooted, a black command window briefly opens on your desktop, this is normal. A logfile will be created that records all actions that The Avenger performed. This log file is saved to C:\avenger.txt. The deleted files will be backed up and saved to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

Once your computer has rebooted, please post back the contents of C:\avenger.txt, a new Hijack This log.

Oh dear, nothing's going right - that destruction of the computer idea might be a good one!

I know I did it right but something hasn't worked. (I saved the program file to "Program Files" rather than Desktop but I assume that doesn't affect it.)

I had antivirus software running - might it be necessary to disable it in order to run The Avenger?

Well, I was sure I had done it right. Anyway, I've re-done it and it seems to have worked up to a point!

The system re-booted itself and the report is set out below from which you will see it has been unable to find the offending file.

I'm sure the file has gone but for some reason its not being reomoved from the log.AVG maybe blocking it.Stop it running and then try to remove it from the log.

I've disabled AVG and run HJT again. In the results I could only see the following:-

I note below HJT report which seems to have succesfully removed the item I deleted.

I've rebooted but it's still slow.When doing nothing in particular CPU usage is still around 10% - 20% and PF Usage is about 240MB - 280MB. Given that the memory is 256MB is that a problem??

Any other thoughts??

As it no longer appears to be a malware problem I would suggest you go to the XP forum and see if they can help track down the program thats running...
