new lap-top problems

Hi, I recently began using my new lap-top and have begun experiencing a few problems.

Since starting up, my system has been running increasingly slowly and at times I have problems accessing the internet.

When I try to run the online scans you recomend such a pandadactive I get a warning message saying that it cannot run with less than Internet Explorer 5.0. I have checked and updated and have IE 7.0. I have also tried this with other recomended online scans, only to get the same message. any ideas why my version of IE is not recognised.

I keep getting a warning from virusburst saying that I have critical system errors and that may have spyware. Is this correct, is it just a pop up?? Either way I don't know what to do about it or how to remove it from my laptop.

I have done all the recomended steps that I am able to do. Here is my latest hijackthis scan:

My System

Blog Entries: 10
Hi Tim and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for any delay in replying, but we have been rather busy lately, and, of course, all our helpers are volunteers.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your system is clean.

HijackThis in Temp Folder
You are running HijackThis from a temporary directory. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C:\ then click on File > New > Folder and call it HJT , or another name of your choice and move the HJT files to this folder. The program creates backup files that we may need to use later. If the program is in a Temporary folder, files may be deleted by you or automatically if your system is set to empty temp files.

Show Hidden Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Downloads
Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

I see you already have AVG Anti Spyware. Please update AVG to the latest definition files.
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG Anti Spyware.
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. DO NOT scan yet.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Do not use it yet!

Reboot
Reboot your system in Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (dependent on your system this may be F5 or another key)
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Run SmitfraudFix
Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run CleanUp!
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows:

Click Options
Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp!
Check the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the “Temporary Files” tab and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked.

Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and DO NOT REBOOT when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these BEFORE running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility.

Go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:
• "Security Info"
• "Warning Message"
• "Security Desktop"
• "Warning Homepage"
• "Desktop Uninstall"

Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

RunAVG Anti Spyware
Run AVG with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • When the scan is complete click Recommended Action and change it to Quarantine
  • Then click Apply all actions
Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

NOTE: AVG scan may require an hour.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

SmitfraudFix - Additional Items
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" - if you want them back, you have to add them back to the Trusted Sites again.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Online Scan
Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Logs required
rapport.txt
AVG Log
Panda Log
HijackThis Log

Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems. In order to provide you with the best possible help, please ensure that HijackThis logs are produced only while in Normal Mode.

my avg scan came back clean and there was nothing in the report to paste to this reply

i hope that this information is what you require. thank you once again for taking the time to look at my problems, hopefully you will be able to help me further, my syatem does appear to be operating better than it was, certainly quicker, although it is still far from perfect. thanks, tim.

Hi Tim

You did great. I appreciate it’s not easy when there are quite a few instructions, but that has really cleaned out your system.

In fact there’s nothing bad showing at all now, so let’s do another online scan.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

A Welcome screen will appear - click 'Accept' at the bottom. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended
Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log. Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems. In order to provide you with the best possible help, please ensure that HijackThis logs are produced only while in Normal Mode.

The Kaspertsky log did not appear to clean any areas, or at least it did not inform me that any areas had/nt been done. i'm not sure.
my computer is performing better, there are just a couple of problems; i must apologise in advance for these queries, likely they are not linked to my question, and are probably just me being dumb.

1) occasionally when i try to download with windows media, firefox tells me that; the plug in has performed an illegal opperation, you are strongly advised to restart firefox.
2) my internet provider is AOL, please don't laugh! sometimes firefox initialises the aol browser, this happens randomly, and without any apparent reason, when i changed my browser to internet explorer so that i could download kaspertsky, the aol browser also innitialised when i selected the download function.

as i said, these problems are probably just me not having my settings configured properly, but i thought i would mention them just in case they were relevant.

i hope i have provided you with evrything you require, and i hope you can use this information to help me further. thanks a lot, hope you are well, and look forward to hearing from you again.

My System

Blog Entries: 10
Hi Tim

You may have a corrupt plug-in – Firefox 2.0 has just been released, have you updated yet? Once updated, it will search for plug-in updates – that could help the problem. If not I would suggest trying the XP forum – those guys know more about these things than I do. I have no knowledge of AOL either I’m afraid – again it would be worth trying the XP forum. Sorry about that.

Kaspersky doesn’t fix anything, it just shows possible problems. In this case it’s just your System Restore points and we’ll flush them just shortly.

Other than that, your system is clean. Any more problems? If not we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure.

You can go ahead and delete any special tools we used (SmitRem, SmitfraudFix, ComboFix, etc). They won't serve a future purpose and are replaced with updated versions frequently, so the copies you have are probably already out of date and there is therefore no need to keep them.

Reset Hidden/System Files
To reset your hidden and system files:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

System Restore
To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

Ad-aware

Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

IE-SPYAD
IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here.

SnoopFree

SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems.

MVPS Hosts File

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

Alternate Browsers

Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer
Firefox
Opera
Maxthon

Firewalls

A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm
Tiny Personal Firewall

Anti Virus Software

It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:
Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are three very good free Antivirus products which are available:
BitDefender Free
Avast!
AVG

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Other Protection

Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
