Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Hoster.
  • Unzip Hoster to it's own folder.
  • Run Hoster.exe
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner.
  • Click Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts file and then click OK.
  • Close Hoster.
  • Note: If a custom Hosts file was in place, you'll have to edit those entries back in.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right click on this link http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards. NOTE: This script will delete any sites you may have added to the Trusted Sites. So if you want them back, you have to add them back to the Trusted Sites again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I see you have more than one Anti-Virus program installed, AVG, Aluria (through EarthLink) and Bitdefender. While this may seem like greater protection, it can cause problems including slowdowns and system hangs. Choose one to keep and uninstall the others.

Any antivirus program must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:
re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. (Not Recommended for XP64).

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Webroot SpySweeper

Please disable Webroot SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable Webroot SpySweeper:
  • Go to the Options>Program Options
  • Uncheck Load at Windows Startup
  • Click Shields on the left.
  • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
  • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
  • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Click Browser Add-Ons and uncheck all items.
  • Exit Spysweeper.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vmlib] vmlib.exe

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Delete the following if they exist:

vmlib.exe<<<Find Via Start>Search

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clean out your Temporary Internet files.

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.. Do NOT Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Restart in normal mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:
  • "Security Info"
  • "Warning Message"
  • "Security Desktop"
  • "Warning Homepage"
  • "Desktop Uninstall" or something similar
Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then post the following logs in your next reply...

C:\rapport.txt (log from the tool)
Panda log
Hijackthis log

Let me know if your Anti-Spyware programs will run now, as there's another I'd like to add.

first time forumer....vincentvingogh

First of all......thanks a million tetonbob......first rate all the way.
I have followed instructions and will attach reports.
Anti-Spyware runs now......in fact I made some changes prior to your response and they are this:
I now am only running a purchased version of McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 and the Earthlink Antivirus/spy/firewall that came with cable connection software....as mentioned, they scan fine now.
Can i uninstall all the troubleshooting programs you had me download?
Are there others you would advise me to download?
Also, being a newbee, I am simply replying to your email......is this the correct procedure or am i to post things elsewhere as well?
Any other advice you may have after viewing reports will be great.
The Hijackthis report for some reason would not attach so it's contents are below:

Incident Status Location

Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\Process.exe
Possible Virus. Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\swsc.exe
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.zip[SmitfraudFix/Process.exe]
Possible Virus. Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.zip[SmitfraudFix/swsc.exe]

Again, I truly appreciate your time and all you've done thus far.
thanks again,

vince

Cheers!

I still recommend you have only one AV active for real time protection. It can cause system slowdowns and hangs to have more than one active at one time. Same for firewalls, you should only have one. As you've purchased McAfee, I'd contact Earthlink tech support and ask them how best to remove or disable the AV/Firewall portion of their package, citing the reasons I've given here as your concern.

Can i uninstall all the troubleshooting programs you had me download?

SmitfraudFix can be deleted now that it's done it's job. Panda IDs those files as problems, because they can be used maliciously (but in fact are NOT in this case). Keep CleanUp. I have it installed on my systems and run it once a week or so.

Are there others you would advise me to download?

I will, in a next post, after I've review the HJT log.

Also, being a newbee, I am simply replying to your email......is this the correct procedure or am i to post things elsewhere as well?

This is just fine....posting logs in the reply is better than attaching.
Any other advice you may have after viewing reports will be great.

How is your system behaving now, please?

Is your version of Spysweeper a paid, up to date version, or a trial? Or have you uninstalled it now?

Please do answer these questions. It will help me with the next step. The HJT log is fine, but HJT is only one tool we use to determine a system's condition.

CCLeaner is an excellent tool. If you're more comfortable with it, by all means, keep it and uninstall CleanUp.

thanks
spysweeper was a trial and was uninstalled prior to last HJT......am now down to just earthlink and mcafee as mentioned.......should i forego all of earthlink's security package and simply stay with my purchased mcafee?
dumped cleanup! and kept ccleaner......all seems to run fine although seems a bit slow at times for a p4 1gig ram with high speed cable.....i mean, slower than it was say 2 months ago......perhaps i need to go into sysinfo/msconfig and see what's happening and running at startup......hope this helps.
thanks

Up to you, of course....but since one you paid for (unless you can get a refund) and one comes with the ISP, I'd say get rid of the one you didn't pay for. Make your choice, and uninstall one or the other, but I think you'll find that with only one AV/Firewall, your system will be running better.

I'd like you to run a tool for me, so we can see if anything else is lurking. This one will remain an effective Anti-malware tool after some of it's features time out in 30 days.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG Anti-Spyware
You will need to update AVG Anti-Spyware to the latest definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~37D2CDBF-2AF4-44AA-8113-BD0D2DA3C2B8} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Post the log from AVG Anti-Spyware, and a new HJT log.

did as instructed.......note:
wasnt instructed to save a HJT report in first step so ran it again a second time AFTER AVG antispy........followed all procedures to the T........on first run of HJT, you were correct and i had the two entries you listed.....hit fix checked on first run and it took care of it.....as i mentioned, had to go back as last step and run HJT again to get and save report...........do i keep the AVG even though i now have the mcafee?
Here are the reports:

AVG Anti-Spyware would be a good program to keep, update and run a scan with once a week or so. It adds another layer of protection to your system's security tools. An Anti-Virus looks for certain things, and Anti-Spyware looks for others. They work in concert. I'd prevent AVG Anti-Spyware from running at Windows startup, and just call it into service when needed. To do so, right click on the AVG A/S system tray icon, and uncheck Start with Windows.

Other than that......

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

first time forumer......vincentvingogh

wow....thanks a million.....one last question.......seems in retrospect that purchasing any antivirus software is unneccessary......at any rate, i have the mcafee and will use it exclusively.......seems you are recommending for me and my system, the avg antispy but not the avg antivirus.......seems you recommend JUST ONE antivirus but many many many antispyware programs......why is that?
I will download all the antispyware you suggest and run it with my mcafee.
I will also have a look at the articles.
Again, first rate forumn.

More than one real time protection agent, which AVs are, and free Anti-Spyware are generally not, can cause system conflict and slowness.

Different AS progs use different methods, and one can find what another may miss. Since they are not active in startup, they don't use system resources, and are available for scanning during your regular maintenance. (Once a week, or so.)

If you're ever looking for good free AV, and more info, look at this thread:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

Best Regards...

Any other questions, feel free to ask, here or in one of the other forums.
