dialer.trojan and "spyware removal wizard" issues

Hi!

First post here :-)

I followed the 5 steps described in the sticky.
Here's the problem: my Norton antivirus is bombing me with alert messages about dialer.trojan files in my pc, several can't be removed. I attached a .txt copy of the virus alert log (too extensive for cut/paste)

I'm also getting the "spyware removal wizard" pop-up very often.

When trying to run Ad-Aware, the software starts the scanning process and after a few minutes the computer shuts down and reboots. After reboot I get the message "winlogon.exe encountered a problem and needed to close"

I've been working on this all day with no luck :-(

I ran a system scan with Norton Antivirus, Pandasoftware ActiveScan Pro (log attached), security.symantec.com, ewido anti-spyware, Spybot-Search and destroy, Ad-Aware (failed, see above), cwshredder. I have SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster and ZoneAlarm always active.

Here's the HJT log:

I see from the HJT log there are several unwanted tools in my computer, should I just find the files and erase them manually?

Hi bickele, and welcome to TSF. Sincere apologies for the delay, but the forum has been very busy of late.

As it's been a few days since you last posted, if you still require assistance, please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Also let us know what actions you've taken in the interim.

Hi!

No apologies needed, you guys are amazing!

I think I managed to get rid of the trojan, Norton is not bitching every 5 minutes anymore.

The "spyware removal wizard" is still popping up though...

Here's what I've done since my last post:

scan and fix with VundoFix, here's the log:

VundoFix V6.2.0

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.6

Scan started at 2:52:26 PM 10/4/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjyp32.dll

Beginning removal...

Attempting to delete C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjyp32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjyp32.dll Has been deleted!

Performing Repairs to the registry.
Done!

Scan with Ewido, clean.

ATF- cleaner.

Scan and fix with Panda Software Activescan Pro. Some files couldn't be deleted, so I did it manually with KillBox. Here's the log:

Scan with CW Shredder, AD-Aware and Spybot Search&Destroy. Clean.

Scan with Norton. Clean.

I found info on how to remove the annoying "spyware removal wizard" but I can't find the registry entry mentioned in regedit. They don't seem to be there. Still getting the pop-up though. Any ideas?

Here's a new HJT log done after changing the name on the HJT icon to "whatever".

Looks like you've done some good work....but I have some jobs for you to do.

Quote:
I found info on how to remove the annoying "spyware removal wizard" but I can't find the registry entry mentioned in regedit.
Not sure what you're referring to on this....if you can expand on that a bit, please...

Also, you can't Killbox registry entries...for that, you need a regfix:

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{147A976E-EEE1-4377-8EA7-4716E4CDD239}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\APP MANAGEMENT\ARPCACHE\ALTNETDM]
Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ivhmirm.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ivhmirm.dll,iaumlkg
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/02a78de4...p/RdxIE601.cab

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Delete the following if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ivhmirm.dll

If it resists deletion, Killbox it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The unwanted tools were part of Smitfraud fix, which it appears you ran. I'd like you to download it anew, and post results from Option 1, after running this next tool....
  1. Download combofix from one of these locations:
  2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

--------------------------------------------

Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please return with results from:

combofix (C:\ComboFix.txt)
SmitfraudFix (rapport.txt)

I'll try to clarify the "spyware removal wizard" pop-up problem: I get a popup looking like the standard install wizard window but not quite, the picture is a bit blurry and the fonts strange. The popup says something like: spyware has been found in your computer, please install the software to remove it. Not in these words, but this is the idea.
I did some research and it turns out that it's some sneaky company trying to make you buy their software.
I found the instructions on how to remove this problem (sorry I can't find the link anymore). They had a list of registry entries to be delete, but I followed the path in regedit and couldn't find the entries... The annoying "spyware removal wizard" window was still popping up though.

Was, or is still?

This is symptomatic of a Smtifraud family infection, which is why I had you run that SmitfraudFix Option 1. It didn't find anything, except desktop backgrounds you likely have set yourself. You're not showing any outward signs of this infection any longer.

Part of a complete Smitfraud fix is to do this:

Please navigate to Control Panel. Click on Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Website
Under the 'Web pages' box, uncheck and delete everything present.

Next,

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • At the top of the page you'll find a "Browse" button. Click the "Browse" button and browse to this file in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\asprouni.exe

  • Click "Open".
  • Then click the "Send" button at the top of the VirusTotal page.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
Then repeat as above for the following files in BOLD:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wirmczj.dll

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Create an uninstall list:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the button " Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from the notepad file into your post

I'm not sure if Virustotal is on the case or if something went wrong; I sent the two files about 20 minutes ago, nothing has happened since. How do you get the results of the scan? Automatically or do I have to pick them up somewhere?

Thanks again!

I haven't seen the popup since I followed your instructions.
OK, good.

Well, if you follow the link for Virustotal, and upload one file at a time, it will be submitted for scanning by several AV scanning engines.

When it's complete, an output will appear on the same page. You then copy/paste the info from the webpage you're viewing.

Virustotal seems to be having difficulties right now. Another uploading scanner service is jotti. It also appears extremely busy tonight.

Please submit the following file to Jotti File Scan

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\asprouni.exe

At the top of the window you should see "File to Upload & scan" and a blank box. Copy and paste the red text from above into the box. Then click "submit".

When it is finished, please copy and paste the information listed under "Service" and "Scanner Results" here.

Repeat for this file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wirmczj.dll

Try one or the other again, please. You may have to wait in a queue before being able to actually submit the files.

I'd like another opinion on those files, please.

Please download the Suspicious File Packer http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and run it.
Paste the following list of bad files into the Suspicious File Packer window:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\asprouni.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wirmczj.dll
Allow SFP to pack the files. This will generate a CAB archive on your desktop.
Please submit it to this site http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/subm....php?channel=4
Please include a link to this topic in the message.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I see you have Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 installed. Ewido has recently been purchased by Grisoft, makers of AVG Antivirus, and the program is now known as AVG Anti-Spyware. It is essentially the same program with a new paintjob; Ewido currently can still be updated to the newest definitions, but this support will likely not last forever. I recommend you uninstall Ewido 4.0, restart your system, then download and install AVG Anti-Spyware. Update it's definitions as directed below, and run a scan where I have it placed in this fix.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG Anti-Spyware
You will need to update AVG Anti-Spyware to the latest definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also take note that your version of Spybot Search and Destroy is not the latest which is 1.4, therefore not offering you the best in protection and detection ability. I recommend you uninstall it, and get the new version, update it, and run a full system scan.

Download and install Spybot S&D http://security.kolla.de/. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available.

Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'. Next click on Immunize to your left. Click the Immunize button (green cross) on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update. Do NOT enable Spybot TeaTimer Resident protection at this time. What this will do is monitor any system/registry changes and will ask you for permission to change any of these settings. It may also hinder our fix at this point. You may enable it after the fix is complete.

Now click on the 'Spybot-S&D' option on the top left to go back to the main screen. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the 'Fix Selected Problems' button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix http://majorgeeks.com/download4392.html and install it over the current Spybot installation.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Followed your instructions to the letter. Only variation is that I used Activescan Pro instead of the free version. Here are the requested logs:

Delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wirmczj.dll

This file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Process.exe

has been placed by one of the tools run. You can delete it also.

Other than that, your logs appear clean.

Well done. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  • IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available:Select one of these, or another of your choice. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch new malware that may have come out.
See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

Anti-Spyware Tutorial

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
